Introducing Spotify Mix, Our New and Exclusive Font
Spotify is as unique and personal as each listener who’s plugged in daily, as well as the artists and creators who have found a home on our platform. We never stop innovating when it comes to building an experience that reflects the vibrancy and creativity of our community. Whether it’s the new products and tools we release or the marketing and events we debut, we are forever evolving.
To that end, today we are introducing our new bespoke typeface: Spotify Mix. Spotify Mix replaces the current font used in our in-app and desktop experiences. It will begin rolling out to listeners on Spotify starting today.* But what is Spotify Mix? Why did we choose to make this move now? And more importantly, what does it mean for you?
To answer these questions, we turned to Rasmus Wängelin, Global Head of Brand Design at Spotify.
Ras, can you tell us more about Spotify Mix?
Sure! Spotify Mix is a variable font designed just for us, and we consider it, quite literally, a remix.
To design this typeface, we broke free from traditional typographic constraints and merged elements from a variety of font styles. This approach mirrors the dynamic and evolving nature of audio culture over the years.
The result is a sans-serif typeface that blends features from both classic and contemporary styles, creating a distinctive and unique look. We subtly incorporated the shapes of sound waves to evoke a rhythmic feel. The combination of sharp angles and smooth curves gives the typeface a distinctive character that feels quintessentially Spotify.
Can you explain how our Brand and Creative team developed it?
We partnered with Berlin-based foundry Dinamo Typefaces to create Spotify Mix. We were drawn to the team’s understanding of music, art, and fashion, and how it best comes to life visually in digital culture.
What does Spotify Mix mean for our users and creators, and when will we all begin to experience it?
At Spotify, we’re all about giving artists and creators more opportunities to showcase their creativity. The new Spotify Mix lets us use this typeface in unique ways—from playlists to marketing campaigns and beyond. We’re always trying new things that mirror the vibrancy of our community and the content on our platform, and Spotify Mix will allow us to do so much more.
As for when you can see it, we’re rolling it out starting today and over the next few weeks within the Spotify experience; however, you can check it out here on For the Record right now. It will also come to life through our marketing and at events like at Spotify Beach during the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity kicking off on June 17.
*Our Spotify Mix rollout will begin with content written in all languages with Latin-based scripts, as well as Vietnamese.
