5 Reasons All Families Should Be Using Spotify’s Managed Accounts for Young Listeners
At Spotify, we want to create an experience that makes time spent with us feel personal and fun for users of all ages. That’s why we’re excited to announce that managed accounts are expanding again to now allow families on any plan—free or Premium—in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, and the Netherlands to create an account for their child.
First introduced as part of our Premium Family plan, managed accounts give listeners 13 and under (or region equivalent) their own space to discover music while parents and guardians maintain control over their listening environment.
That means parents and guardians in these countries using a Premium Family plan can continue to create managed accounts with Premium benefits, while those on other plans can now easily set up a managed account on our free tier. Here are five reasons families should check out this tailored listening experience.
Managed accounts are now free for more families in more countries.
With our latest expansion, we’re opening up managed accounts to millions of families around the world, helping them nurture their child’s love of music in a tailored environment, regardless of their Spotify plan.
Today, managed accounts are available in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the U.S., and the U.K.
Stay tuned—managed accounts will be expanding to more countries soon.
Managed accounts give young listeners a way to discover and enjoy music independently.
We hear from so many parents who agree: listening to music is a good use of their child’s time. With a managed account, young listeners can dive into Spotify’s catalogue of music via their own, separate account. They can explore new artists, stream the soundtrack from a favorite movie, and create their own playlists, all while parents and guardians stay in control by setting boundaries around content and features.
To fuel their discovery, young listeners receive personalized recommendations, like Made for You mixes and popular features like daylist. It’s an easy way for the next generation of listeners to start developing their own musical tastes in a managed environment.
Young listeners on our free tier will hear Spotify ads, including helpful information about how to get the most out of the app.
Each young listener gets their own Wrapped.
With a managed account, young listeners will receive their own Wrapped experience. An added bonus? That means that the days of schoolyard singalongs dominating your Wrapped are over.
Parents and guardians can customize listening boundaries, with default settings already in place.
All managed accounts have built-in default controls put in place with young listeners in mind. For example, managed accounts are private, meaning they aren’t searchable or discoverable by others. Young listeners also do not have purchasing capabilities and cannot access certain features like Messages.
In addition to these core features, managed accounts have adjustable settings that can be controlled by parents or guardians from the Parental Controls page in settings. This includes an explicit content control, which is turned on automatically for every new managed account. This restricts access to any content marked as explicit by rights holders. Parents and guardians can also turn off playback of specific tracks and artists.
Video and Canvas (short looping visuals accompanying songs) are also disabled by default, keeping the experience focused on listening.
Creating and customizing parental controls for a managed account is easy.
To set up a managed account, open Spotify on your mobile device, tap your profile icon on your homepage, then go to Add account > Create a managed account.
