Plot Twist: 3 New Ways to Discover and Explore Audiobooks on Spotify

Whether you’re into epic fantasies or juicy celebrity memoirs, getting lost in a great book is always time well spent. Now, Spotify is making it easier than ever to discover new stories and dive deeper into what you’re already listening to with three new features that let you create personalized audiobook playlists, explore more by talking to Spotify, and continue your favorite series right where you left off. 

These updates help listeners spend less time searching and more time inside the story. Together they bring more books to more people and are the latest reasons why Spotify is the best place to be a fan. 

“Books are one of the most powerful ways people spend time on Spotify, and our focus is making it easier than ever to discover great stories and stay immersed in them,” said James Jacoby, Senior Director of Engineering & Insights, Audiobooks at Spotify. “With these new features, we’re reducing the friction between listeners and the books they’ll love. Helping people spend less time searching and more time inside the story, while advancing our mission to get more books to more people.”

Here’s a look at what’s new.

Prompted Playlist for audiobooks

Last year, we introduced Prompted Playlist in beta, giving listeners the ability to soundtrack any moment by describing what they want in their own words. We then expanded the feature to podcasts, where more than half of those who have used it have found a new-to-them show. Now with Prompted Playlist for audiobooks, we’re bringing that same personalized discovery to a whole new format.

Just type in the kind of book you want to listen to, and Spotify will serve up a tailored playlist based on your personal tastes and what’s trending in the literary world right now.

Want to catch up on what’s popular? Try asking for, “A list of books with adaptations from the last three years that are beloved or critically acclaimed.”

Or, get creative with a request like, “Make me an audiobook calendar. Start with the current month and pick one book per month, under 15 hours. Each book should be a perfect thematic fit for the month while also being a book that fits my listening habits.”

You can customize your playlists to refresh daily or weekly so you always have new recommendations to explore. 

We’ll continue improving the experience as we learn from listeners and their feedback. As we expand in this beta phase, some aspects may evolve, with usage limits in place while we test and learn. Prompted Playlist for Audiobooks is rolling out in beta to eligible Premium users in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.

Just ask Spotify

There’s a new way to discover and explore music, podcasts, and audiobooks. 

Now, all you have to do is type or use your voice to have a back-and-forth conversation with Spotify. Request new recommendations, ask about the story you’re currently listening to, and more, with questions like, “What Scandinavian noir should I listen to for my upcoming trip to Sweden?” or “Where does the Cyclops first appear in The Odyssey?”

Because Spotify understands follow-up questions, your listening session will evolve in real time and can seamlessly switch between music, podcast, and audiobook requests. 

This conversational experience is available in English to eligible Premium subscribers aged 18+ in the U.S., Ireland, and Sweden.

Never lose the plot between books

When a book ends on a cliffhanger, you want the next installment immediately. Now, finding out where the story goes takes just one tap. 

As soon as you finish a book in a series, Spotify will recommend the next title so you can keep the adventure going. Books belonging to a multi-part saga will also now be marked, while dedicated series pages map out the exact reading order. You can also head to an author’s profile page to explore all the series they’ve written.

Just Say the Word: A More Personal Way to Ask, Discover, and Listen

Spotify has always been built around your taste. Now, we’re making it easier to shape what you hear, understand what’s playing, and explore your listening—just by asking.

Eligible Premium users will see new ways to talk to Spotify across Home and the Now Playing view on mobile. By typing or speaking directly in the app, you can have a back-and-forth conversation to choose what’s playing, learn about the music you love, revisit your listening history, and go deeper on podcasts and audiobooks, all without leaving Spotify.

Soundtrack any moment

Some days you know exactly what you want to hear. Other times, you want to change it up as you go. Ask Spotify to “Play some artists I haven’t heard before,” then keep shaping the vibe with as much or as little direction as you want. You can say, “Add some Bad Bunny,” and then ask to narrow it to “just his recent stuff,” or “make it more upbeat.” And when you love what you hear, ask Spotify to “save this song,” “add this to my queue,” or “follow this artist.”

Understand what’s playing

Want to learn more about your favorite song, album, artist, or genre? Ask from the Now Playing view. Try “What is the inspiration behind Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism?” “When was this album released?” or “What genre is this?” Spotify can give you more context, then guide you to related artists, sounds, and stories that deepen your discovery of music and the creative processes behind it.

The experience goes beyond music. While listening to a podcast or audiobook, you can ask about the people, stories, and ideas behind it from “What other books has this author written?” to “What other podcasts has this guest been on?”

Explore your listening 

Because Spotify understands your playlists, favorite artists, repeat listens, and listening history, it can help answer questions about your taste. Ask “When did I first listen to this song?” or “What genres have I been into recently?” It’s a new way to explore the story of your taste, from the songs you keep on repeat to the artists, genres, and moments that shaped it.

A more personal way to listen

The new conversational experience is part of our ongoing work to make Spotify more personal and useful for every listener, giving people more ways to get the most out of every moment. Use it your way: press the mic button to talk, type instead, or keep listening like you always have. 

It’s rolling out gradually in beta for Premium users 18+ in the U.S., Ireland, and Sweden across iOS and Android devices in English. Like any beta, it’s a work in progress: responses won’t always be perfect, and your feedback directly shapes what comes next.
