Spotify Stands With the Black Community in the Fight Against Racism and Injustice

June 2 is Black Out Tuesday, a day of collective disconnect from work meant to help people reflect and come together in support of the Black community. On this day—and every day—Spotify will support our employees, friends, partners, artists, and creators in the fight against racism, injustice, and inequity.

We are using the power of our platform to stand with Black creators, amplify their voices, and accelerate meaningful conversation and long-needed change. As a result, you’ll notice some changes on Spotify starting at 12:01 AM on Tuesday. 

Blacked-out channels, playlists, and podcasts

Listeners will see a black logo and headline image on more than a dozen of our flagship playlists and podcasts, including Today’s Top Hits and RapCaviar, as well as all of our urban and R&B playlists and many podcast covers. Spotify will also pause social media publication as a symbol of solidarity that reminds us that things cannot remain status quo. Finally, select participating playlists and podcasts will include an 8-minute, 46-second track of silence as a solemn acknowledgement for the length of time that George Floyd was suffocated.

Black History Is Now hub activation

We will also amplify Black voices by further leveraging our long-standing Black History Is Now hub, which will serve as a central resource and home for music, playlists, and podcasts like Code Switch, You Had Me at Black, and Higher Learning with Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay. The hub will also feature several playlists, including Black History Salute and We Shall Overcome. The Black Lives Matter playlist, which was updated for Black Music Month in June, will also be featured.

Special curation of playlists

In addition to adapting the visual presentation of the platform, there will be special curation of select songs on each of the blacked-out playlists to reflect the current environment. For example, expect to hear a Kendrick Lamar song upon playing RapCaviar, a Gary Clark Jr. anthem for Rock This, and Rhiannon Giddens when you stream Indigo

Targeted shelf and advertising

Users in the U.S. will also see a targeted shelf positioned prominently on the home page of both desktop and mobile apps that drives to Black Out playlists. Additionally, we’ll be running related ads globally on the Spotify Free Tier. Both of these efforts will ensure even more listeners have the opportunity to hear from Black voices.

The Window podcast programming

Later in June, we’ll be launching season 2 of Spotify’s The Window podcast. The initial season focused on the lives of essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, and season 2 will evolve its storytelling to now focus on the experiences of the Black community at this moment in time. Hear from individuals such as a Black business owner in an area affected by protest, a victim of police brutality, and a Black police officer. The goal is to further the conversation and use our platform to share these stories that help us humanize each other.

Spotify’s RapCaviar Pantheon Unveils New Class of Honorees with Cardi B, Jaden Smith, Gunna, and Juice WRLD

In 2017, Spotify’s RapCaviar created a real-world Pantheon, complete with life-sized sculptures of the three biggest breakthrough artists of the year. Today, RapCaviar is announcing the return of Pantheon, as well as its 2019 inductees—Cardi B, Jaden Smith, Juice WRLD, and Gunna—four cultural disruptors who are making an undeniable impact on hip-hop.  

Through Pantheon, Spotify equates the art form of rap to the origins of art and civilization. Much like the ancient Greeks, rap has a pantheon of icons, names that are forever etched into culture, and songs that no one will ever forget. This year’s honorees will forever be part of hip-hop’s cultural fabric.

In ancient times, when a hero was celebrated, they were solidified in materials like stone, marble, or bronze in positions that embodied their achievements. The four 2019 RapCaviar inductees will be honored similarly, with masterfully crafted, ornate, life-size sculptures that capture their vibrant personalities. The unique structures in our Spotify activation will be on display to the public at the Brooklyn Museum in New York from April 3-7.

“Spotify is committed to supporting young, innovative artists who also have a positive impact on the music industry, culture, and society,” said Carl Chery, Spotify’s Hip-Hop curator and Head of RapCaviar. “These four bold and fearless artists are striving to make changes with their music, and we’re thrilled to induct them into the program.”

Read a little about each of the artists and their sculptures below.

Cardi B has cemented herself not only as one of the top acts in hip-hop, but also as one of the most important artists in all of pop culture. She was the first solo female rapper to win a Grammy for Best Rap Album with Invasion of Privacy, but her work doesn’t just appeal to rap fans. She’s been bridging the gap between two of the fastest-growing genres in the world (hip-hop and Latin), while setting records along the way. This past year, Cardi owned the cultural conversation, and the phone in her sculpture is a nod to her influence going beyond music.

Juice WRLD’s blurring of the lines between hip-hop, pop, rap, and emo makes him a breakout in every sense of the word—not to mention his debut single, “Lucid Dreams,” which has over 700 million streams on Spotify. His sculpture is inspired by the idea of mythological Greek Titan Atlas—who was condemned to carry the universe—at rest, a nod to the vulnerability in his music.

Juice WRLD

Gunna is your favorite rapper’s new favorite rapper. He has emerged as one of the most popular artists in hip-hop today. Gunna has worked with nearly every notable rapper in the genre over the past few years. He’s earned respect from fans and artists alike, and his music has shown tremendous success on RapCaviar. The snake is a nod to the recurring serpent iconography he uses throughout his visual language.

Jaden Smith’s artistry defies convention, and the best is yet to come. His statue represents both his highly conceptual music and his unconventional journey from child actor to rapper and artist. The two heads in his sculpture also signify the dueling characters in Jaden’s music. Jaden’s ever stoic personification in SYRE sits atop his body like any normal head and represents teenage emotion and heartbreak. As SYRE, Jaden holds a screaming head, ERYS, a fiery representation of materialism and anger, to demonstrate how light conquers chaos.

The inaugural Pantheon included sculptures of 21 Savage, SZA, and Metro Boomin. This year’s inductees are a reflection of hip-hop today and will continue to shape the genre in the years to come.

The Pantheon was created by Spotify’s in-house team. Creative Director Ibra Ake consulted on the project and directed the films.

Metro Boomin and Gunna To Headline Spotify’s RapCaviar Live

Spotify’s RapCaviar Live is returning to the stage with headliners Metro Boomin and Gunna on April 5 at Varsity Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The show will also feature Blueface, Roddy Ricch, and YBN Cordae.

Following the launch of RapCaviar Live in 2017, Spotify continues to showcase some of today’s hottest rappers to their biggest fans around the country. Produced in partnership with Live Nation Urban, RapCaviar Live is inspired by Spotify’s highly influential flagship hip-hop playlist, RapCaviar, which encompasses a collection of fresh hip-hop tracks. RapCaviar is one of Spotify’s biggest playlists, with over eleven million followers.

Since its inception in August 2017 with a kickoff show in Atlanta headlined by Gucci Mane, RapCaviar Live has made stops in Toronto, Chicago, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., New York, and Houston. Previous artists on the tour include Chance the Rapper, Migos, Cardi B, Lil Uzi Vert, Trippie Redd, Juice WRLD, A$AP Mob, Dipset, Lil’ Pump, Playboi Carti, Mike WiLL Made-It, and more.

‘The Joe Budden Podcast’ Lands Exclusive Partnership with Spotify

The Joe Budden Podcast, a top music podcast and go-to listen for hip-hop and rap culture enthusiasts, has teamed up with Spotify to bring the wildly popular series exclusively to the streaming service beginning September 12.

Since its inception, The Joe Budden Podcast has subsequently published over 175 weekly episodes; not only topping the podcast charts, but achieving a steady and fevered growth. Each week, listeners are welcomed into a raw, opinionated, and enthusiastic dialogue with Joe and his co-hosts Rory and Mal, as they discuss hip-hop music and news, conduct interviews with artists and cultural luminaries, and touch base on cultural events through their own unique and unfiltered lenses.

Beginning September 12, 2018, The Joe Budden Podcast will bring its hugely influential series exclusively to Spotify, doubling the number of episodes for the podcast. New episodes will drop every Wednesday and Saturday of each week.

Joe first became known to mainstream audiences with his self-titled 2003 debut album, which featured the Grammy-nominated hit “Pump It Up.” While continuing to release music, both as a solo artist and as a member of hip-hop supergroup Slaughterhouse, he also began his career as a broadcaster and media personality, hosting Complex’s popular Everyday Struggle, co-starring on VH1’s Love & Hip: New York, and founding his own eponymously titled podcast.

This partnership represents a major addition to the already broad slate of exclusive original audio and video content available to hip-hop fans on Spotify, including the RapCaviar enhanced playlist, vertical music videos and podcasts like Dissect, Microphone Check, and Good As Hell.

Spotify’s RapCaviar Live is returning to New York with headliner Chance The Rapper on September 29 at the Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk in Brooklyn. In partnership with Verizon, the Brooklyn show will also feature Sheck Wes, Tierra Whack and DJ SpinKing.

Following the launch of RapCaviar Live in 2017, Spotify continues to showcase some of today’s hottest rappers to their biggest fans around the country. Produced in partnership with Live Nation Urban, RapCaviar Live is inspired by Spotify’s highly influential flagship hip hop playlist, RapCaviar, which encompasses a collection of fresh hip hop tracks and has since become one of Spotify’s biggest playlists with over 10 million followers.

Verizon and Spotify have partnered to bring a special show to New York, featuring some of the top hip-hop and R&B artists. As a partner of the RapCaviar Live Brooklyn show, Verizon will be hosting a special VIP section for members of its loyalty program, Verizon Up. Members can redeem tickets in the My Verizon app.
