The Transformative Power of Spotify Songwriter Sessions

“When you’re an emerging writer, the toughest thing is getting into the room,” starts Aaron Buckingham, a lead on Spotify’s Songwriter and Publishing Relations team. “Maybe you have some friends from college or school that you wrote songs with, and maybe it grows to someone you form a band with. But to get into rooms with more established writers and on to artists’ radars—that can take a lot of time.”

The process is all too familiar—not just for Aaron, but for burgeoning songwriters looking for an opportunity to shine. Even when a new songwriter possesses undeniable talent, reaching that career breakthrough requires them to navigate an intricate path. And since part of Aaron’s role at Spotify is to unlock opportunities for songwriters and publishers on and off our platform, he goes further than simply helping songwriters and producers get into the room. He and his team construct the room.

Spotify Sessions: A first taste of collaborative songwriting

Spotify Sessions gives rising hitmakers a first taste of professional collaboration. Occasionally themed, always thoughtful, these sessions give songwriters the opportunity to connect with artists, producers, and engineers who are further along in their careers. With specific opportunities for R&B writers and women and non-binary creators, as well as songwriters in our RADAR Songwriters program, we’re using the space to advance marginalized talent.

To date, Spotify has hosted dozens of writing sessions globally that have been attended by an array of the world’s top songwriting and production talent, including Rodney Jerkins, Ink, Leland, Ilsey, Wayne Hector, Ricky Reed, Ina Wroldsen, and Kamille. The results are notable. Stream Dua Lipa’s ethereal dance trackHallucinate” or 21 Savage’s Grammy-winning “a lot” and you’re hearing the results of a Spotify Session.

“Songwriters are the architects who have built the music industry that we all kind of exist in,” Aaron explains to For the Record. “I’m incredibly passionate about the process of songwriting, particularly by those who aren’t necessarily performers themselves. I personally love how our writing sessions knock down some of the political walls and give people an amazing opportunity to create together, and come with no agenda attached.”

Once the writers get into the room, Aaron’s next job is to understand how Spotify can best amplify their talent, starting by pairing them with fellow writers.

From the beginning, Spotify Sessions has set the stage for a few songwriters’ first collaborative writing workshops. For Aaron, Ines Dunn stands out. “I’d be listening to a new Mimi Webb song or Maisie Peters and look at the songwriter credits and be like, ‘Ines Dunn? Is that the same student who came to our writing camp?’ And it was!”

In 2019, Spotify invited Ines and some of her classmates from the East London Academy of Music to a dance and electronic music writing session at our Noteable Songwriting Studios in London. There they tasted their first collaboration between artist, producer, and songwriter. “Everyone wanted to work with Ines,” remembers Aaron. “She was an immediate star.”

For Ines the experience was her first time workshopping with seasoned songwriters, and it was life-changing. Now she’s a full-time songwriter with credits on Mimi’s and Maise’s recent albums, as well as on Griff’s, METTE’s, and Josie Mann’s. And while songwriting has become part of Ines’s everyday life, the process of coming together with others to write a song in settings like Spotify Sessions continues to be magical.

“Songs are always such a landmark of the time and place and the people that you wrote something with,” she tells For the Record. “I have such strong attachments to the moments when I wrote those songs. As the days go by, you always forget what you did and how much time passed and the funny thing that happened. But I feel like songs really capture the ‘Oh God, and I remember writing that thing in that moment and finding it the funniest thing in the whole world,’ which is really nice because it kind of immortalizes those memories.”

Supporting songwriters from moment to music

After the sessions, there’s more to do, including finding ways to showcase the work using the power of our platform.

“Spotify is well positioned to really connect collaborators from around the world,” Aaron says. “Whether it’s things like having the names and the credits viewable on platform, or with the introduction of Written By playlists and Songwriter Pages, we’re giving anyone who’s listening to music that ability to be able to click into the credits and see the complete discography of a songwriter’s work straight away. That’s great for fans because it gives them more context around the folks who have helped create the music, but also I think it’s super beneficial for the writer in actually unlocking future collaborations.”

We’ve long supported behind-the-scenes moments of music creation through programs like Equalizer. In 2021, we created Noteable as a home for songwriters, producers, and publishers, with resources like Songwriter Pages, Written By playlists, the Songwriters Hub, educational video series, the Created by Women playlist, and much more available. And with five studios, we’re also making in-person sessions even more accessible to creators in more locations around the world. Casa Spotify Medallo is the latest offering for Colombia-based songwriters to hone their craft together.

Similar to RADAR, our RADAR Songwriters program helps develop songwriters on the cusp of greatness. With marketing and editorial content, we’ve helped songwriters in Canada, Mexico, America, Italy, the U.K., and beyond gain industry and audience exposure. Ines Dunn, in fact, is one of the latest RADAR Songwriters, bringing her journey full circle.

“A music career is really borderless now with the impact of streaming. And we’re seeing that in the writing sessions as well,” says Aaron. “We’re seeing writers from America, the U.K., and Sweden write for all these big K-Pop artists. I’d love for Ines Dunn to get opportunities from places as far as Australia or South Korea because an artist’s manager heard her music on one of our playlists.”

Songwriters like Ines don’t necessarily seek out the spotlight, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want—or deserve—it. “For Spotify to kind of give the platform to people who choose not to have a platform is really lovely,” she says. “To know that there are people in the world who don’t know anything about songwriters, but who will know something about someone because of RADAR Songwriters, is really special.”

Spotify Surprises Young Songwriter With a Recording Session Featuring His Favorite Band

Sometimes all it takes is one great concert to inspire a new generation of musicians. And for an 11-year-old from Cheshire, UK, that was a live performance from The Vamps

Daniel knew he wanted to make music after seeing the British pop band in 2019. Since then, he’s been practicing guitar and writing songs. He even won his school’s talent show with a performance of one of his original pieces.

After learning about Daniel’s journey, Spotify invited him to the Noteable Studios in London to record some original tracks. We also invited The Vamps along—but kept it a surprise. Check out Daniel’s reaction when he met his music inspiration for the first time.

For the Record caught up with Daniel to learn more about the experience.

Tell us a bit about the concert where you first saw The Vamps. What made it so impactful?

Daniel: I first saw the Vamps in their Four Corners Tour in Liverpool in 2019. Seeing a live concert was so much better than listening to music in the car. It felt like a party and made it all more real. Seeing the guitars and how they played them was very cool.

How would you describe your musical sound? Are there any other groups that inspire you?

Daniel: I would describe my musical genre as soft pop, but I’m also working on some songs at the moment which I’d describe as pop rock! I’m also inspired by James Arthur, 5 Seconds of Summer, and Anson Seabra.

What is your creative process like? How do you come up with ideas for lyrics and melodies?

Daniel: It depends—sometimes when I’m jamming on the guitar I decide I like the riff or think that the chord structure might be fun to work with. I then put it on a loop on my looper pedal, and sing in my head and experiment with a tune. At other times I’m singing to myself and decide that the lyrics sound nice. Once I’ve got a few lines of lyrics, I’ll find out what key I’m singing in and then I’ll try and work on the instrumental ideas.

Tell us about the eventful day in Noteable studios when The Vamps surprised you.

Daniel: I loved my whole day at the Noteable studios. It was so good working with Amy, the sound technician, and learning the process of recording a song. When The Vamps arrived my heart stopped, and I couldn’t speak. It was the best day of my life so far! I enjoyed having a chat with Brad, James, Conner, and Tristan on the sofas and sharing the fruit! We chatted about school talent shows and writing songs. Since my trip to the Noteable studios, I’ve been inspired to write more songs and improve the songs that I’m writing. I’m in the process of writing an eight-song album!

Then For the Record asked The Vamps for their side of the story.

What was your reaction when you got the call to come surprise Daniel?

The Vamps: Any opportunity to encourage people to follow their dreams, we’re in! We were all very excited to meet Dan and check out his vibe.  We recorded the last album, Cherry Blossom, in Metropolis Studios, so it’s always special going back there. We always jump on an opportunity to help a young musician. I remember when we were all getting started and any good advice we could get, we would listen. I loved Dan’s attitude towards making music and the confidence he has to enter a studio with such heritage.

Why did you want to jump on the opportunity?

The Vamps: Since the start, one of the main objectives of The Vamps is to spread love and happiness. If we can do that then so can he. When we saw Dan’s letter it was a no brainer. When I was that young I would do anything for some advice that would point me in the right direction. Life is about believing in yourself, and if there is anything we can do to help, we will.

In the video you give the young songwriter a piece of advice. Can you recall any advice you got when you were first starting out? Any that you wish you had followed but didn’t?

The Vamps: I think one of the main pieces of advice is that music doesn’t just automatically show up on a piece of paper, or is created by a computer. It comes from emotions and experiences. He will go through these during his lifetime growing up. The best thing he can do is write about it.

Of course when you’re that age you don’t tend to want to listen to other people. When I was younger, sometimes I would over-play, and not listen to anybody because I was having too much fun; but the reality is, the song is king. You have be in the mindset of “What is best for the song?” and not what’s best for you as a musician. Now when we write, I’m always thinking, “What does this music NEED?” and think less about what I want.

What are some other ways Spotify has helped you connect with your fans?

The Vamps: Spotify is the new way of discovering and listening to music. I can’t tell you how much it has helped The Vamps reach an international audience. I feel it delivers what people actually want, and ignores any politics behind the music. I have discovered artists that I never would have 10 years ago. It connects music, which connects people.

Meet the Latest Class of Independent Artists Taking Part in Spotify’s Fresh Finds Program

Spotify’s Fresh Finds playlist brand is often the very first level of Spotify playlisting for independent artists. With a main flagship playlist, nine genre lists, and 14 playlists from regions around the world, it has served as a launchpad for countless artists who have gone on to reach widespread success. Back in May, we took it to the next level, launching a brand-new marketing program for independent artists centered around Fresh Finds. Our focus was to help developing artists learn, collaborate, and grow, giving them tools for long-term, sustained career success.

Since joining the inaugural Fresh Finds class in May 2021, the first four artist partners—Wallice, Unusual Demont, Julia Wolf, and EKKSTACY—have seen a 50% average increase in Spotify followers, a 65% average increase in monthly listeners, and over 6 million discoveries, or first-time listeners. Now, following in the footsteps of the inaugural group of Fresh Finds artists, we’re welcoming four new up-and-comers to the program: Doss, Araya, TOLEDO, and Pom Pom Squad.

“We are thrilled to welcome this new group of independent artists and producers into the Fresh Finds family,” says Jeff Stempeck, Head of Indies, Artist, and Label Partnerships at Spotify. “The sustained growth we’ve seen from our first Fresh Finds class earlier this year is exactly what we hope to bolster in this program—giving artists the tools to build long-term careers both on and off Spotify.”

Doss, Araya, TOLEDO, and Pom Pom Squad will receive access to opportunities and resources that will allow them to grow their careers, fan bases, and reach. Some of these include:

  • Education & access to resources: Each artist will have access to personalized Masterclasses and mentorship, best practices and credits for Spotify for Artists tools like Marquee, and more.
  • Marketing support: All four artists will be featured in a major marketing campaign on- and off-platform that includes a social content series, Spotify Clips, out-of-home advertising, and more.
  • Creative Collaboration: Each artist will be given the opportunity to create a Spotify Singles original song and record it at Electric Lady Studios in New York City for release in November. What’s more, Spotify’s songwriter and publishing Noteable team has paired the four artists with collaborators who understand each of their unique visions:
    • TOLEDO will be paired with producer Gabe Wax
    • Pom Pom Squad will be paired with producer Sarah Tudzin (aka illuminati hotties).
    • Araya will be paired with producer Mindchatter.
    • Doss will be paired with songwriter/vocalist Cecilia Gault.

And while these artists are “fresh,” they’ve already been honing their skills for years. Get to know them below.

TOLEDO

The New York City-based duo and BFFs Jordan DunnPilz and Daniel Álvarez de Toledo released their most recent EP, Jockeys of Love, earlier this year. It’s a lush dream-pop soundtrack for those long drives when the entire world seems to be in harmony with you, and your thoughts seem monumental because of it. The pair’s emotional clarity, boldness, and lyrical maturity span across all of their music, including a handful of singles and their 2019 EP, Hotstuff. “A lot of the advice we’ve gotten has come from watching videos and interviews from other producers and artists,” the duo shared. “One of our favorite videos to revisit is the ‘making of’ video for Feist’s album The Reminder. In that video, she records with Chilly Gonzales at La Frette in France, and there are shots of her tracking vocals through guitar amps, recording noise from the outdoors, and to this day we use almost all of the methods we saw in that video. The way they recorded and worked on the songs felt so impulsive, and we often find ourselves trying to capture that impulse. So, although Feist and Chilly Gonzales have no idea who we are, we thank them for giving us the best advice of our career.”

Araya

Araya strikes with precision and heart on his latest Y2K-produced single, “Archon,” and his forthcoming album, Ethos, which will come out in early 2022, less than a year after the Thai-Chilean songwriter’s breakout debut and critically acclaimed Atlas. “The best piece of music advice I’ve gotten was from Thaddeus, my producer,” said Araya. “He told me that as an artist, it’s important to remember to live life, to step outside of my work space and continue to seek inspiration.” As such, Araya grapples with purpose, identity, and spirituality through his music as he mixes vintage and futuristic sounds into a transfixing blend of R&B, soul, hip-hop, and electronic.

Doss

Raised in Texas and based in New York, Doss first appeared in 2014 with her EP Doss, which evokes the playful maximalism of the early 2000s with equal parts sincerity and humor. Fast-forward to this year. It’s been a full seven years since she released her cult favorite self-titled debut. Following her tours with Porter Robinson and the late SOPHIE, she has returned with an impressionistic dance EP, 4 New Hit Songs, that mirrors a daydream of nights past—equal parts ennui and euphoria. I come from a collaborative background,” she shared. “I am excited to reconnect with that structure and practice—explore new ideas and ways of working alongside someone I might otherwise not have had the opportunity to meet.”

Pom Pom Squad

Mia Berrin first played under the name Pom Pom Squad in 2015 after moving to New York, where she eventually linked up with Shelby Keller (drums), Mari Alé Figeman (bass), and Alex Mercuri (guitar). “My mom once told me, ‘Any space you want to take up, you’ll have to make yourself,’” Mia told For the Record. “When I first moved to New York, I tried to assimilate into certain social scenes or cliques and always ended up feeling like I was compromising my own wants, needs, or interests to fit in. I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned in my career so far is that I have to forge my own path. It sounds cliché, but it’s a cliché for a reason!” So with their 2021 album, Death of a Cheerleader, Pom Pom Squad offers a cathartic, punk, and decidedly queer take on picking up the pieces—from heartbreak, from injustice—and creating oneself anew.

Spotify’s New Noteable Releases Playlist Highlights the Names Behind Some of Your Favorite Hits

Behind any creator is a team of passionate, dedicated individuals pushing and aiding the artist as they pursue their craft. The same can be said for many musicians, who may enlist a songwriter or producer to help their songs truly take flight. These behind-the-scenes masterminds often stay out of the spotlight but nonetheless deserve time to shine. At the same time, the artists you love can often be talented songwriters in their own right, something that should also be recognized.

Back in February, Spotify launched a new home for songwriters, producers, and publishers called Noteable. On their homepage, the songwriter community can now find Songwriter Pages, Written By playlists (which you can find by searching “written by [name]”), our on-platform Songwriters Hub, educational video series, our Created by Women playlist, and much more—with additional playlists and offerings to come. It’s a place for creators to connect with others, hone their craft, and explore best-in-class tips.

Now, we’re bringing some of these behind-the-scenes creators to the forefront with a new flagship Noteable Releases playlist. This new offering, launching today, will update every Friday with a selection of some of the best recent work from songwriters and producers from around the world. You might recognize some of the voices—the playlist will also include pop hits written with top songwriters as a way to recognize and highlight the songwriters and producers behind the tracks. Fans can go even deeper behind the scenes through Spotify Clips, as the playlist features videos from songwriters including Finneas O’Connell, Autumn Rowe, and Jack Antonoff.

Who are some songwriters who’ve made an impact behind the scenes, you ask? Check out the cards below to discover some of the names and faces behind some of your favorite tracks.
