Share Your Biggest Mandopop Moments With ‘My Mandopop Memories’

Whether it’s an unforgettable first love or heartbreak, those adventurous road trips with friends, or planning for the dream wedding, millions of fans around the world turn to Mandopop to provide the ultimate soundtrack.

Mandopop is especially popular in Asia, with Taiwan being home to legends of the genre like A-Lin, Cyndi Wang, and Jam Hsiao. But Mandopop is a sound that has truly gone global, and its popularity continues to grow in countries like Brazil, India, Mexico, and Germany.

Generating more than 500 million monthly streams on Spotify, Mandopop has increased on the platform by nearly 45% in the last year alone. And as we celebrate 10 years of Spotify in Taiwan, we’re launching our “My Mandopop Memories” campaign as a way for artists and fans to express their love for the genre.

“Mandopop captured the hearts of many through its poetic storytelling and relatable lyrics, soundtracking different moments of listeners’ lives,” said Kossy Ng, Spotify Head of Music, Asia. “We specially created My Mandopop Memories to deepen the connection between artists and fans and celebrate them as they continue to build their memories with Mandopop.”

At the heart of the campaign is Taiwan 10-Year Anniversary, a first-of-its-kind destination that gives fans an audio companion for their most meaningful moments and milestones. Consisting of 100 of the most-streamed Mandopop tracks on Spotify, these classic tracks are characterized by their melancholic sound and deep lyrical meaning.

Taiwanese Band Sunset Rollercoaster Builds Momentum With New Spotify Singles

Sunset Rollercoaster breaks ground as the first Taiwanese band to collaborate with Spotify to release tracks for our Spotify Singles program. The indie-pop group, known for their distinct musical style and poetic lyrics, has proven that their music transcends borders, with an appearance at Coachella earlier this year. Now, with two newly recorded songs, Sunset Rollercoaster is ready to give fans old and new a fresh take on their music.

The band, which comprises Tseng Kuo-Heng (vocals/guitar), Chen Hung-Li (bass), Lo Tsun-Lung (drums), Wang Shao-Hsuan (keyboard), and Huang Hao Ting (saxophone), traveled to the Spotify Studios in Los Angeles to record a reimagining of their song “Candlelight” and a cover of “腦海中 (In My Head)” by fellow Taiwanese indie band The Loophole (露波合唱團).

“These Spotify Singles give us the opportunity to rearrange and merge the style that represents us, and helps a wider and more global audience discover our music,” the band shared in a statement. “This is one of the ways to put music into the world and introduce Asian genres—from Mandopop to indie—that cut across diverse sounds and languages.”

“Candlelight” was released in 2020 and is an electronic-focused track cocreated by Sunset Rollercoaster and South Korean indie musician OHHYUK. For the new Spotify Singles, the band stripped down and recorded an unfiltered version of the original track.

Sunset Rollercoaster brings a jazz-synth-influenced style to “腦海中 (In My Head).” The goal with this interpretation is to attract greater appreciation for Mandarin songs and share them with a global audience.

Sunset Rollercoaster’s new songs will be featured on the flagship Spotify Singles global hub, as well as on the New Music Friday and Hot Hits Taiwan playlists. The band has already amassed more than 1.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and their reach will only continue as their tracks are discovered by new listeners in Asia and beyond.

There’s no denying that Jay Chou is the King of Mandopop. He has reigned as Taiwan’s top artist on Spotify for the past four years and was crowned Top Mandopop Artist in Spotify’s 2022 Wrapped.

Jay began his music career as a composer. However, after releasing his 2000 self-titled debut album, he proved himself as a pop singer. Over the span of 22 years, he has released 15 albums, and he is loved by fans all over the world.

It’s been six years since his last album, but Jay is back with Greatest Works of Art. “This album reflects my current thoughts and feelings,” the singer-songwriter shared with For the Record while visiting Spotify’s office in Singapore. “Many know that I have been keen on collecting art in recent years, so [for this album] I have integrated my thoughts on art into my songs.” Jay’s using this album, and its music videos, as a way to bring together art and music.

Mandopop—Mandarin pop music—has transcended its roots in Chinese-speaking cultures to garner fans worldwide. Jay’s music is one introduction to the genre.

The artist’s new video, “Cold Hearted,” features Jabbawockeez—the group that won the first season of the MTV show America’s Best Dance Crew—dancing in locations around the world. By collaborating with global talent, Jay hopes to introduce more fans to his music and to Mandopop. “In the Western world, while many may not understand Mandarin, music and dance are universally understood languages,” he explained. “I look forward to collaborating with more musicians from all over the world in the future.”
