3 Updates on the Spotify Mobile Experience to Help Improve Accessibility

Spotify is part of the lives of over 356 million people around the world—and we’re cognizant that many of our users have different access needs. We’re continuously making accessibility improvements to the experience to help many of our users enjoy the songs and podcasts they love more easily. So today, we’re introducing three updates to Spotify on iOS and Android: buttons with increased readability features, options for text resizing, and a beta for podcast transcripts.

These will all be rolling out in the coming weeks. We believe each change is part of our long-term mission to create a platform where everyone can enjoy an immersive artistic experience

1. All buttoned up

When you use Spotify, you’re constantly tapping buttons to shuffle a playlist or start a listening session. Today, you may notice some changes to these buttons in terms of color, text formatting, and size. Our aim is to make it easier for low-vision and visually impaired users to spot and engage with these actions when using Spotify on their phones. The update can also aid users in situations where there’s low lighting or high screen reflections. Plus, changing the text formatting from all caps creates more space for translation or localization for the more than 60 languages Spotify currently supports.

2. Living large

The Spotify app already reflects system-wide text size changes, known as Dynamic Type, to a certain extent. With the latest accessibility updates, we’re enabling users to increase the text even more, improving overall navigation on the app and giving listeners greater control to personalize their experience. Users can adjust their text size under Settings via iOS to meet their specific visual needs and preferences.

Here’s how:

  1. On your phone, head to Settings > Accessibility, then select “Display & Text Size.”
  2. Tap “Larger Text” for larger font options.
  3. Drag the slider to select the font size you want.
  4. Making the text too large might make it hard to tap buttons or other functions within the Spotify app. You can always go back to your phone settings and adjust the font size as needed.

3. Spell it out

In the coming weeks, we’re also introducing auto-generated podcast transcripts. This is a limited beta for select Spotify Original and Exclusive podcasts across iOS and Android. The new feature will automatically generate transcripts for these shows, allowing users to read the text of the specific podcasts on their phones either with or without sound. Users will also be able to quickly scroll and navigate through specific episodes and click on any written paragraph to start playing from that point.

This is just the first step for the podcast transcript experience: Our overall ambition is to enable transcripts across all podcasts on Spotify. As always, we want to know your thoughts, so head over to our Community to share your feedback.

We care deeply about creating an inclusive experience, which is why we’re working with people with disabilities to conduct user research and plan to evaluate and assess our ideas on an ongoing basis. We want to make Spotify available to everyone, and with these new updates, we’re taking steps to progress toward that goal.

Listeners Can Explore Their Spotify Collections Faster and Easier With a New ‘Your Library’

Your collection of music and podcasts is a representation of you—and it’s something deeply personal. But with 50,000+ hours of content released globally every day on Spotify and hundreds of those saved in Your Library, we know it’s crucial to be able to quickly find what you’re looking for, jump back into your latest discovery, or rediscover a beloved track you saved years ago.

Starting today, we are rolling out a new version of Your Library to all Spotify mobile users. Now, you’ll have a more streamlined way to easily explore your collection and find your saved music and podcasts faster. Your Library’s updated design and added features will enable you to spend less time looking for content and organizing your collection, and more time rediscovering the music and podcasts you’ve loved over the years. And as always, keep adding even more content for a library that grows alongside you into the future.

The new Your Library is packed with a new layout and features that make browsing your music and podcast collection easier than ever. Get ready for:

  • A streamlined way to browse and search your entire collection—both music and podcasts—in one place.
  • New dynamic filters to help you browse that collection. Choose between album, artist, playlist, or podcast to see the audio you’ve saved that matches. Then, if you’re on the go, simply tap the Downloaded filter to view all your content available offline* at once.
  • Better sorting options. Choose between viewing your audio alphabetically, by recently played, or by creator name. Now that’s organized.
  • More control and easier access to what you listen to most. Choose up to four playlists, albums, or podcast shows to keep pinned for instant access so you can quickly dive back into that work playlist or sleep podcast. Simply swipe right on these items to see the “pin” option.
  • Use the new Grid view to sort through your liked content in a more visual way with large-tiled album, playlist, and podcast cover art.

The new Your Library will be rolling out to all users on iOS and Android in the coming week.

*Music downloads are only available to Spotify Premium users.

New Features on Spotify’s Home Hub Make Navigation and Discovery Even Simpler

About a year ago, we reworked the Spotify mobile experience to refresh our Home interface. Since then, Spotify users have been able to access the content they love more quickly and easily—and maybe even discover something new straight from their home screen. But the ease and discovery don’t stop there. This month, we’re announcing a series of updates that will make the Home experience even more personalized for each and every listener.

We’re constantly working on ways to improve our user experience. Through this latest update, we’ll be rolling out several advancements on the mobile Home hub designed to make finding the audio you love easier and more intuitive. These will roll out to users globally on iOS and Android this month.

Whether you’re looking to replay some of your favorites, pick up where you left off, or discover something new, there’s something for everyone on the Home hub. Learn more about these new features below.

  • Travel back in time: Rediscover lost gems in your listening history with a new “Recently played” destination, where users can jump back in time and browse up to three months’ worth of listening history. Premium and Free users globally will be able to browse recently played individual tracks and episodes in addition to the playlists, albums, and shows they were played from.
  • Jump into new and unfinished podcasts: Global Premium users can view new and relevant podcast episodes right within the Home hub. New episodes will be marked with a blue dot, and episodes you’ve already started will display a progress bar indicating how far into the episode you are.
  • Discover more music: Premium users globally won’t miss a single track from artists they love. Now, you will see a new surface highlighted on top of the Home hub dedicated to discovery-oriented recommendations that are personalized, timely, and reactive to your taste.

We believe that together, these updates will improve accessibility of both podcast and music content across mobile for your users. We’ll continue to adapt and evolve our platform to meet the needs of our users, ultimately providing the best possible audio experience for our listeners around the world.

Spotify Is Rolling Out 36 New Languages on Mobile

During last month’s Stream On event, Spotify shared some big news: our plan to expand to 80+ new markets. But that’s not all. We also announced that the service would soon become available in 36 new languages, bringing the platform total to 62 languages. This update, which will make Spotify more accessible for speakers of these additional languages worldwide, goes hand in hand with our commitment to building a truly borderless audio ecosystem.

The new languages are already available on the web platform, and today they will begin to roll out on the mobile app. The expansion brings the following to Spotify: Afrikaans, Amharic, Azerbaijani, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Bulgarian, Simplified Chinese, Croatian, Danish, Estonian, Filipino, Gujarati, Hindi, Icelandic, Kannada, Latvian, Lithuanian, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Norwegian, Odia, Persian, Portuguese for Portugal, Eastern Punjabi, Western Punjabi, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Swahili, Tamil, Telugu, Ukrainian, Urdu, and Zulu.

These market and language expansions allow us to engage with more listeners, in more places, in more languages. By reaching more people, we are giving millions of new creators the opportunity to build a career, while connecting existing creators with new audiences.

Get to Your Favorites Faster with Spotify’s New Home Screen

They say there’s no place like home, and we couldn’t agree more. So, we’ve updated Spotify’s mobile and tablet Home screens to be your ultimate go-to location to access content you love, as well as discover something new.

Starting today, when audio lovers open up their Spotify mobiles or tablet apps, they’ll be greeted with a refreshed user interface that allows them to quickly jump back into familiar content. Simply tap to access the podcast you stream each morning, the playlist you always tune into during your workout, or the album you’ve been playing on repeat all week. It’s a dedicated space at the top of Home to quickly and easily access your familiar music and podcasts.

As you may notice throughout your day, the screen and content change along with your schedule, welcoming you with a “Good morning” and transitioning into “Good afternoon,” and even “Good evening” as daylight wanes.

Beneath these six recommendations is a space where you’ll find your top podcasts, “made for you” playlists, recommendations for new discoveries based on your listening, and more. All in, the new Spotify Home does the hard work for you, making it easier than ever to find something to listen to—whether a long-time favorite or brand-new discovery.
