Today at Spotify Stream On, artists, songwriters, podcasters, and authors from around the world joined for the latest announcements and for hands-on demos of the new tools and resources coming to our platform. Podcast fans in particular enjoyed a big surprise when Hasan Minhaj revealed he’s reprising his role as Gotham City’s most enigmatic Super-Villain in The Riddler: Secrets in the Dark. 

This scripted audio series follows an unexpected adventure from the perspective of one of Gotham City’s most cunning Super-Villains, Edward Nygma. Characters from last year’s global sensation Batman Unburied—including Batman, Barbara Gordon, and Alfred—will return for another gripping installment of our story as Batman begrudgingly teams up with The Riddler to bring down a Super-Villain obsessed with cleansing the streets of Gotham from sinners— including our unlikely duo.

As the latest series to come from the exclusive, multiyear partnership between Spotify, DC, and Warner Bros., The Riddler: Secrets in the Dark follows two previous releases: the aforementioned Batman Unburied, and Harley Quinn and The Joker: Sound Mind. Batman Unburied’s 10-episode first season premiered in May 2022 to global success, receiving adaptations in nine languages and topping the charts in 35 markets. And that success continued earlier this year when all seven episodes of Harley Quinn and The Joker: Sound Mind dropped at once, quickly reaching the top of the charts in six markets.

La série audio ‘Batman Autopsie’ prête à embarquer le monde entier

The ‘Batman Unburied’ Audio Series Is Ready To Take Flight Across the World in Spotify’s Largest Simultaneous Launch

Anytime the Dark Knight returns to clean out the seedy Gotham underworld, excitement is bound to follow. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Batman Unburied, the upcoming Spotify audio series created in partnership with Warner Bros. and DC. Luckily for listeners, the wait is nearly over: Batman Unburied will premiere simultaneously in nine global markets May 3. That’s right—along with the original English-language script, eight adaptations of Batman Unburied will also land in Portuguese, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. And now that the U.S. trailer is out on Spotify, those wanting a sneak peek can check it out below. 

The upcoming global launch of Batman Unburied comes on the heels of Spotify’s November release of The Last Days of Maradona, which simultaneously launched in six markets, and the recent adaptations of Chile’s Caso 63 for Brazil, India, and the United States. Developed and produced by Warner Bros., Batman Unburied follows suit; the fully localized casts and production teams ensure that the adapted scripts, specifically crafted to reflect the different cultures and languages while remaining true to the core story, will bring Batman Unburied to life for fans across the globe. Written by Executive Producer and Batman Begins screenwriter David S. Audio Brings New Dimension to the DC Comics Universe

In 2020, Spotify announced a multiyear agreement with Warner Bros. and DC for a slate of narrative-scripted podcasts that explore the stories of your favorite superheroes and supervillains. The first project, Batman Unburied, will be released later this year. The new original series is being executive produced by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Rises).

Today at Spotify’s Stream On event, Goyer joined Jim Lee, the Chief Creative Officer of DC, to give the world a look into how audio will bring a new dimension to DC’s universe of characters and stories. The duo discussed the prospect of the new Batman series alongside teasing other characters whose stories will be explored via audio, like Superman, Lois Lane, Wonder Woman, Joker, Catwoman, Katana, The Riddler, Batgirl, and Harley Quinn.

David Goyer, Warner Bros, and DC Set to Bring ‘Batman Unburied’ to Spotify

Warner Bros Is Bringing the DC Super Heroes and Super Villains to Spotify as an Exclusive Series of Podcasts

Take it from your favorite super heroes (or even super villains): The League gets the job done. So in the spirit of Batman and Robin, the JLA, or the Birds of Prey, Spotify is entering into a new multiyear partnership with Warner Bros. and DC to produce and distribute an original slate of narrative scripted podcasts exclusively on Spotify.

The partnership—the first to involve the intellectual property of the entire DC Universe —will leverage iconic characters in new Spotify shows. Additionally, the companies are expected to draw upon Warner Bros. Studio’s broader collection of timeless titles as stand-alone podcast series. This collaborative and innovative effort will further increase the diverse array of premium storytelling content for Spotify listeners around the world.

Warner Bros. Digital Networks (WBDN) will manage the business and strategy related to the partnership. Warner Bros. Television Group’s digital studio, Blue Ribbon Content (BRC), will oversee the creative relationship and will co-develop and produce the programming in collaboration with Spotify, which will be responsible for the marketing, advertising, and distribution of the shows exclusively on its platform.

In addition to producing narratives based on existing characters and franchises from across Warner Bros. and DC, the two entities will also collaborate with Spotify to create new programming from original intellectual property—but more on those crossover events in a future issue.
