This Earth Day, Spotify Lifts the Voices Fighting Climate Change

Climate change is a problem that impacts individuals, communities, and the planet we call home. Real solutions to help the planet exist, but it’s going to take all of us working together.

To mark this year’s global celebration of Earth Day, we’re using our platform and reach to raise awareness and inspire climate action. Through creative approaches like songwriters camps and true crime podcasts, we’re using the power of audio to lift the voices working to protect the planet.

Informing and enabling fans through content

This Earth Day, listeners can learn from creators and get inspired to promote positive change through our Climate Action Hub, which is available globally. In addition to discovering climate-focused podcasts, audiobooks, and playlists curated by leading voices, listeners can easily click through to the UN Act Now website to take action.

Empowering artists, producers, and songwriters

In partnership with EarthPercent, Spotify hosted “The Earth as Your Co-Writer,” a two-day songwriters camp held at the Spotify Studios in LA on April 17 and 18. As part of the effort to support climate action, participating artists RINI, UMI, Jenevieve, Zacari, Joony, and Presley elected to credit Earth as a co-writer on their songs, making the planet a stakeholder in any music released from the camp. Proceeds will go to selected EarthPercent organizations. We asked some of the participating artists to tell us more about the earth’s impact on their work.

Hosts of True Crime Podcast ‘And That’s Why We Drink’ Are Partnering With Parcast for New Occult Variety Show ‘Rituals’

Ghost stories, true crime reporting, and boxed wine recommendations are the pillars of Christine Schiefer and Em Schulz’s podcast And That’s Why We Drink. In each episode, Christine reports on unsolved crimes and murder mysteries while cohost Em covers all things paranormal. But since the podcast’s launch in 2017, the pair has wanted to dive deeper into the themes that exist beyond the physical realm. Now they’re doing just that with their new Spotify Original podcast, Rituals.

Produced in partnership with Parcast, Rituals will explore topics like witchcraft, sorcery, alchemy, satanism, spiritualism, and the occult. Christine and Em will separate fact from fiction as they take listeners on a tour through the dark arts and share stories about people who have first-hand experience bridging the gap between our world and the realms beyond it.

“I’ve loved reporting on this type of content during the few times I have on And That’s Why We Drink. However, I feel like my brand on ATWWD is primarily centered on hauntings, and that’s kept me from letting myself really look into more spiritual topics,” Em told For the Record. “With Rituals, I’ve been having so much fun discussing new cases that I’ve always hesitated to cover before now.”

This occult variety show will give fans of And That’s Why We Drink more opportunities to bond with Em and Christine as new episodes release each Monday. To celebrate the podcast’s launch, For the Record asked the dynamic duo more about what listeners can expect from their new project.

How can your fans who love And That’s Why We Drink expect this new podcast to be similar? Different?

Christine: Fans of ATWWD will get the same banter they’ve grown to love (or at the very least, tolerate), plus the same brand of spooky topics. But having the Parcast research team behind us is a game changer; they are experts at what they do and dig up so much incredible info, allowing us to focus on the fun part—sharing the story with you all, and each other!

Em: The main difference is that we cover less of the true crime cases and focus more on the occult and spiritual topics. Some people at Spotify joked that Rituals is the “occult variety show” and that definitely feels on target.

Why is podcasting a good medium for these kinds of stories?

Christine: At the core, we are storytellers. ATWWD grew out of our love of sharing spooky stories over wine late into the night. We just added a microphone!

Em: We’ve been told over and over that people who listen to our podcast feel like they’re just “catching up with friends.” I think our way of storytelling has made people feel comfortable to learn about darker topics without any pressure, because for them it feels like a laid-back conversation amongst pals.

On the surface, true crime and comedy seem like an unlikely pairing. Why do you think the mix works so well for your podcasts?

Christine: We have always made it a priority to entertain our audience, but never at the expense of the victims. We try to sprinkle in some humor to help us cope with how dark these topics can get.

Em: We have always tried to keep the levity away from the actual stories and more on ourselves. It’s always been important to us to keep things in perspective and remember that the content we cover is often the worst parts of someone’s life. The comedy element is never about their cases, and we try to poke as much fun at ourselves as we can.

What is your favorite topic you cover in the podcast?

Christine: My favorite topic so far has been tarot. I learned so much and have a whole new appreciation for the art of it. I have even pulled out my own decks and have begun dabbling myself!

Em: I loved reporting on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I love the history of spiritualism and always knew the author was a big part of the movement, but I never totally knew where he fit in. It was a bonus to find out that he and I are both members of the same parapsychological organizations!

The Global, Gen Z–Influenced Rise of Horoscope and Astrology Podcasts on Spotify

Is Mercury in retrograde? What does your star chart say? Throughout history and across cultures, people have looked to the heavens for insights and inspiration to bring back to their daily lives. More recently, horoscopes and astrology found their way into pop culture, and over the past few years, onto the soundscape that is podcasts.

Back in September 2019, Spotify and Parcast launched Horoscope Today, a daily podcast that gives listeners a personal forecast—one for each of the 12 signs per day, 365 days a year. Since then, the show has been adapted into local languages for listeners in Brazil, Mexico, India, Indonesia, and Germany. (There’s even a feed available in Australia and New Zealand that publishes the U.S.’s episodes a day early to account for the time change.)

In September, Parcast and Spotify brought Horoscope Today, or Tu Horóscopo de Hoy, to listeners in Spain. The first localization of Parcast’s show—meaning it’s not only translated, but also has unique horoscopes and messages for its Spanish audience—was prompted by the success of the original in the U.S. and in Mexico, especially among Gen Z, who are proving to be rabid connoisseurs of horoscopes.

Beyond Horoscope Today is a global landscape of future-focused shows featuring witches or tarot readings or—more simply—groups of friends discussing their star charts, many of which have a Gen Z host, audience, or theme. And while each differs in its approach and style, they offer something similar: a message from the universe.

Turn up the magic with Witch, Please in Mexico and Colombia

Witch, Please debuted in August as a weekly exclusive Spanish-language Spotify production hosted by the witch, tarot reader, and astrologer Mika Vidente alongside apprentice and friend Fer Aldre. Each Monday, these magical hosts warmly and humorously guide listeners through the astrological climate of the week and the keys to face it with harmony according to tarot, horoscope, or astrological chart.

For Mika and Fer, being a witch is not just a hobby; it’s a way of life. It centers on being rebellious while accepting there are things we cannot control. They also believe that being a witch requires them to connect with the energy of the universe to better know themselves, discover the magic within them, develop it, and grow to be better people. “The younger generations have innate curiosity and turn to astrology because they have many questions to which they cannot find an answer in a broken physical world,” the duo explained.

During the podcast, the two also read stories from the audience and give advice using tarot cards. The show mixes humor and practical astrology with basic concepts to help listeners in their daily lives.

Dial in to Central de Astrologia in Brazil

Now ringing up those in Brazil who love advice, horoscopes, and a nostalgic aesthetic: The stars have aligned to bring you the Original Spotify podcast Central de Astrologia, which launched in September. This podcast’s aesthetic is that of a classic telephone shopline from the ’90s: “bringing everything that heaven can offer you each week for the modest price of your attention.” It’s a lighter, almost satirical take on the horoscope.

With visual and sonic aesthetics reminiscent of the ’90s, Central de Astrologia features internet astrologer Bruna Paludo, otherwise known as Madama Br000na, in discussions about astrology, self-care, and daily life issues. Tune in weekly for informative and funny episodes filled with special guests, audience interaction, current events, and memes. The show evokes the memories of the golden age of teleshopping and icons such as Walter Mercado, who founded the first call center based on astrology, and Susan Miller, who is famous for her accurate and constant advice in magazines and on the internet.

Find horoscopes in France on La Fabuleuse

Horoscopes are becoming so ubiquitous that Gen Z podcasts on other topics will even, at times, dive into the world of astrology. One such example is a recent episode of the first French vodcast, La Fabuleuse. The podcast is hosted by Gen Z influencer and singer Bilal Hassani and his former roommates, who refer to themselves as “the fabulous.” Together, the five young guys break down notions of gender, sexuality, and what it means to be a 20-something in today’s world.

The episode “L’astrologie, des spoilers sur ta vie?” (or “Astrology: Spoilers for your life?”) is a seamless example of the ubiquity of the subject among Gen Z. The hosts explain the different forms of divination arts and debate whether it is a good idea to want to know your future. Like any good group of friends, they debate the merits behind reading horoscopes and how much stock to put into what they say.

Mediums, magic, and mysteries in the U.S.

Parcast Studios is known for its riveting true crime, history, and supernatural podcasts. Its new Spotify Original series Mediums fits the bill, combining the history of clairvoyance in the U.S. with its foray into pop culture. And what’s more: Shelby Scott, the host of Scare You to Sleep, is using her soothing voice to terrify once again.

Though a slight break from horoscopes, fans of the occult are bound to be spooked and shocked by this podcast. If you’ve ever tried to summon a spirit with a Ouija board or found Theresa Caputo on Long Island Medium fascinating, this Spotify Original is for you. Mediums details the history of clairvoyant figures, mostly women, in the United States. In the 19th century, the spiritualism movement grew in popularity and people began to turn to mediums to get answers about what happens after death—but not without consequence.

Ask the Tarot and you shall receive

Finally, fans can get live horoscope advice every Thursday at 9 PM ET on Spotify Greenroom’s Ask the Tarot. Each week, Michelle Tea, award-winning writer and host of the Your Magic podcast, will solicit listeners’ life problems and read tarot for them to help navigate their life choices and divine meaning from the magic of life’s mysteries. Whether or not your card is drawn, listeners are in for a thrilling time.

The Ever-Curious Brené Brown Comes to Spotify With Two Exclusive Podcasts

Dr. Brené Brown has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy—emotions we all experience, for better or for worse. According to her 10-year-long study on leadership, courage is not only teachable, but is actually a collection of four skill sets: rumbling with vulnerability, living into our values, braving trust, and learning to reset after setbacks, failures and disappointments.

Dr. Brown has been sharing her findings through books like The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly, Braving the Wilderness, and Dare to Lead; TED Talks including top-rated “The Power of Vulnerability”; podcasts like Unlocking Us; and a Netflix special called The Call to Courage. Now, she’s bringing her knowledge and curiosity to Spotify in a new multiyear partnership with Spotify and Parcast featuring exclusive content. Soon you’ll be able to find her existing podcast, Unlocking Us, exclusively on Spotify and be able to stream new content like Brown’s Dare to Lead podcast.

We chatted with Dr. Brown about storytelling, her new Spotify exclusive podcasts, and her dream guests.

In the beginning of your viral 2010 TED Talk, you make the link between being a researcher and a storyteller. How has your thought process about the two identities changed over time?

Stories are data with a soul. We are a social species and since the beginning of human history, we’ve used stories to communicate, connect, and teach. Today, as I dig deeper into two new research areas—leadership and self-awareness—storytelling continues to emerge as central to my work. Both research and storytelling are tools for understanding more about ourselves, each other, and the world. I can’t imagine one without the other.

What have you learned in the process of creating your current podcast, Unlocking Us with Brené Brown?

I learn something from every single podcast conversation. Almost everything I’ve learned has either changed something about how I show up as a partner, parent, and leader; changed how I think about myself and the world; or, at the very least, forced me to examine my choices and opinions. Hosting a podcast is the best job ever.

How are researching, writing, and recording a podcast different from doing so for a book?

As someone who is insatiably curious, being a researcher, writer, and podcaster are three of the most fun and rewarding jobs I can imagine. I write books to communicate findings to research questions. Researching and recording solo episodes when I take on a topic from my research feels a lot like the process of writing a book about research findings. However, when I prepare for a conversation with a podcast guest, I have no answers, just questions. And the On My Mind episodes are more of a personal exploration about what has me curious at the moment.

Dare to Lead will be your first Spotify Exclusive Original podcast. What topics, concepts, and guests can fans look forward to?

The Dare to Lead podcast will be a mix of solo episodes and conversations with change catalysts, culture shifters, and as many troublemakers as possible. Innovating, creating, and building a better, more just world requires daring leadership in every part of our daily lives—from work to home to community. Together, we’ll have conversations that help us show up, step up, and dare to lead.

Why did you decide to bring your podcasts to Spotify?

I wanted a home for both podcasts, and I wanted it to be a place that felt collaborative, creative, adventurous, and full of music—like my actual house, where you’d find guitar stands in every room and framed pictures of everyone from Willie Nelson and Aretha Franklin to Freddy Fender, Mick Jagger, and Angus Young hanging on my walls. It was also very important to me to build a podcast home where people could continue to listen for free.

What other features can fans find from you on Spotify? How do these accompany the podcasts?

In addition to the podcasts, you’ll find full playlists from me and mini mixtapes from my guests. Music has the power to connect us and remind us of the one thing that truly matters when we are searching for comfort, celebration, inspiration, or healing: We are not alone. There’s going to be so much music! Starting with my takeover of Spotify’s Yacht Rock playlist (which was much more challenging to put together than I thought. Ironically, this turns out to be a very controversial genre full of not-so-chill debates).

Who is someone from all of history you wish you could interview on your podcast?

Barbara Jordan, Martin Luther King, Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Ann Richards, Joan of Arc—I could go on forever. But, if I only had one time-travel pass, I’d use it to play cards and drink sweet tea with my grandmother, Ellen. While listening to Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson.

Follow Dr. Brown’s podcast Unlocking Us so you never miss an episode. Additionally, tune in October 19 for her new Spotify exclusive show, Dare to Lead, available for everyone and free on Spotify.

From the Illuminati to Yale’s Skull and Bones, Explore the World of Underground Organizations in Parcast’s New Podcast, ‘Secret Societies’

Yale’s Skull and Bones, the Carbonari, the Black Hand, Illuminati—what do these organizations all have in common? They’re all some of the most-whispered-about underground clubs in the world and the subject of Parcast’s new original podcast, Secret Societies.

The series will bring listeners on a journey through hidden passageways into the mysterious realm of assassin sects, high society clubs, and powerful political cabals. The show explores each society—filled with conspiracies ranging from shadow figures to unknown rituals—in two episodes that expose the people and context responsible for the organization’s founding and analyze the psychology behind their beliefs.

“Secret societies are intriguing across cultures and aren’t specific to one region in the world—they exist everywhere and are unknown, mysterious entities that are universally intriguing,” says Max Cutler, founder and managing director of Parcast, a Spotify company.

While the societies may be secret, Parcast is letting the cat out of the bag. As a way to tap into that universal intrigue, the series is being launched simultaneously in the U.S., Brazil, and Mexico—a first in the podcast space.

“Brazil and Mexico are two of Spotify’s fastest-growing markets in terms of podcasting,” Cutler says. “We’re seeing phenomenal traction and encouraging growth in the overall podcast ecosystem there, so it was a natural fit for us to run this first global launch in the three countries.”
