Spotify’s 10-Year Journey Elevating Latin Creators

In 2013, Spotify embarked on a transformative journey in most of Latin America’s Spanish-speaking countries, a journey that has since reshaped the rhythm of global music. This tenth anniversary of our presence in the region is not just a landmark in the history of Spotify; it’s also a celebration of how Latin creators—propelled by the power of streaming—have taken the world by storm.

Back then, Spotify’s global Top 100 charts featured no Latin songs. Today the musical landscape is radically different. Latin beats have not only appeared on these charts, but they’ve conquered them, growing at 28% annually on Spotify. More than one out of every five songs in the global Top 100 is Latin—a clear indication of the genre’s rising dominance and widespread appeal.

This era has been marked by the emergence of groundbreaking artists from cultural hotspots like Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, and Puerto Rico who have topped charts and reshaped the cultural fabric. “The music scene has experienced a revolution in recent years, where Latin rhythms from reggaeton to música Mexicana are dictating the global pulse,” says Mia Nygren, general manager of Spotify in Latin America. “At Spotify, more than simply witnesses to this phenomenon, we have been facilitators; we’ve seen constant and permanent growth of the industry in the last decade. It is an honor to be the bridge that unites these talented artists with global audiences.” 

The impact of Spotify in this Latin music surge is undeniable. It’s been the digital confluence where artists have met fans, resulting in a 986% increase in Latin music listeners on Spotify worldwide from 2014 to 2023.

 

“I am extremely excited about the future for us in Latin America. We’ve come so far and we have room to grow, but of course that comes with a huge responsibility,” Mia continues. “There is still more talent to be discovered, and we are excited to help them go from local stages to regional to finally the global scene. It’s noteworthy that 21% of all Spotify global users are in Latin America, highlighting the significant impact and potential of this market.”

For the Record also had the opportunity to hear from a few artists who’ve been with Spotify from the beginning of our journey in Latin America. Read on for thoughts from Argentina’s Yami Safdie, Mexico’s Ha*Ash, and Colombia’s TIMO below.

How do you think Spotify has played a role in advancing your career?

Spotify is absolutely essential for anyone starting out in the music industry. It’s been a key player in my journey, unlocking opportunities from being featured on playlists to recommendations that introduce my music to potential fans. I’m so thankful for this; I don’t think I could have come this far without Spotify’s platform.

Can you share a story that highlights how Spotify has changed the way you connect with your audience?

I absolutely love checking out the playlists that feature my songs. It’s thrilling to see that a significant portion of my tracks’ streams come from these playlists and the listeners’ own libraries. The creative titles of these playlists are always a highlight for me—they’re just so much fun. I often share these playlists on my social media and have great conversations about them with my friends and family.

How do you think Spotify has played a role in advancing your career?

Spotify has played an essential role in the growth of our career. The playlists and the platform’s wide audience have allowed people who possibly weren’t familiar with our music to now know and enjoy it.

Can you share a specific case or story that highlights how Spotify has changed the way you connect with your audience?

Spotify has democratized music in every sense. Today an artist can create a song at home and freely release it for the whole world to listen to. Similarly, the audience has the freedom to decide whether they like it or not, without any intermediary. It’s democratic for both musicians and audiences alike.

How do you think music streaming has transformed the consumption habits of fans around the world?

We think the most significant impact since Spotify entered our lives is the expanded access it provided to music and artists. Previously there were numerous constraints with the formats available, but streaming has simplified everything. This simplicity has skyrocketed the number of times artists’ music is played. Undoubtedly, the advent of Spotify has transformed our lives.

Can you share a specific case or story that highlights how Spotify has changed the way you connect with your audience?

We leverage features like Canvas for our music promotion. When releasing a new track, we invite our audience to share videos of them singing or enjoying the song. We always select the best ones and include them in our Canvas. This helps us attract more listeners to our music on the platform and fosters a deeper connection with the song.

Spotify Takes Discovery to the Next Level in a New Beta Test

When it comes to music discovery, Spotify is always offering new experiences that let you connect with the artists you love and discover your new favorite songs along the way. Features like Blend allow you to mash up your musical tastes with friends, family, and even the artists you listen to. Swedish RADAR Artist Sam Ezeh Brings a Retro Sound to Modern-Day Listeners

Sam Ezeh’s music may have elements of ’60s and ’70s rock and soul, but he’s making a mark with his own progressive 2021 twist. The Swedish artist’s sound defies genre and gives modern listeners something they can’t help but sway their heads to. The singer, songwriter, and producer is one of the newest artists to be a part of Spotify’s emerging-artist program, RADAR, which launches in the Nordic region this month.

Through RADAR, Spotify will work with Swedish and Danish artists like Sam, LOVA, Augustine, Mina Okabe, and IVAN$ITO to amplify and connect their music with new audiences. Follow their journey in the enhanced playlist RADAR COLLECTIVE Nordics

For the Record chatted with Sam to learn more about his new EP, Night at Ezeh’s, and where he finds his inspiration.

What are you looking forward to as one of Spotify’s first RADAR artists for Sweden?

I’m very excited for my music to continue to spread across the globe. And hopefully it gets to resonate with more and more people. As a new independent artist, it’s a great opportunity. So many new people have discovered my music through Spotify playlists, like the Release Radar playlist. And the platform is a good way for people to follow me if they’re not up to date with my social media.

How does streaming your music expand your opportunity to reach new audiences? 

I love experimenting. I feel like my main goal is to have fun when I make music. There are so many different styles that I listen to, and I want that to be heard in the music that I make as well. 

This whole streaming era is very reassuring. It lets me know that no matter what type of music I make, there will always be someone out there who appreciates it. I’m on Twitter sometimes, reading my mentions, and I see there are so many different people who listen to my music. It’s really fun how the internet has brought everyone together in a sense.

You have a hand in all stages of your work, from songwriting to producing to mixing. Why was it important to you to learn about all these elements of making music? 

I started my musical journey alone. A lot of people have either a group of friends and they start a band together or they’re in a choir or something like that. But I didn’t have that, so I had to learn everything myself. And it’s very liberating to have knowledge in all of these areas, because I know that I can try out whatever I want. And it’s also very empowering to know that I can take a song from an idea to finish without anyone else having to be involved. I’d say my favorite part of the process is the producing.

What message do you want people to take from your music?

Honestly, I just want people to vibe to my music, and hopefully I can kind of soundtrack moments of their lives. But also with my whole experimenting thing, my creative process, I hope that people can take inspiration from that too. And whether they’re a creative person or not, they know they don’t have to conform to any norms or rules, and they can just feel freedom in whatever they do.

You’ve described your EP, Night at Ezeh’s, as an invitation into your world. What do you mean by that?

So it’s a collection of some songs I’ve made so far, but I tried to arrange the track list so it would feel more like one musical piece, adding an intro and the interlude and such to give the whole EP a life of its own. That’s why it’s called Night at Ezeh’s. I want it to be like a night with me. If I had to pick one track for people to begin with, it would be “CRISIS,” because it was my first release and that’s where my journey started. 

This past year presented many unprecedented challenges. How has it changed the way you approach your music?

It didn’t really affect my day-to-day life, since I’m a “bedroom producer” and I’m at home all the time anyways. But not being able to meet people out, I kind of had to find sources of inspiration elsewhere. And so a lot of it was just looking within myself, a lot of introspection, and also taking all that time to work on my crafts and deepen my passions.

Do you use any Spotify tools to connect with fans?

I like to use Canvas [a short looping visual artists can add to their tracks on Spotify] to show people my visual side. I feel like it adds something to my songs, too.

What advice do you have for fellow emerging artists?

I’d say having patience, knowing that things take time, but also clarifying what it is that you want and then adjusting yourself accordingly. I also believe that there are lots of opportunities in this world, so when the time is right, things can happen very quickly too.

3 Ways To Feel Close to Your Favorite Artists While Social Distancing

Live shows and touring are paused for the time being, but your favorite creators are likely still doing what they do best: being creative. Even without in-person concerts or fan events, artists are finding plenty of ways to engage fans remotely and digitally. That means there’s also many opportunities for listeners to connect with artists and support them (beyond streaming their music for your private dance party).

Tip 1: Share Their Songs to Your Socials

What better way to support an artist than by recruiting fans? After all, sharing is caring. With just the tap of a button, you can copy a link to send the song you’re streaming via SMS, Messenger, Twitter, WhatsApp, or email. Or, you can go further by sharing the track on your Facebook and Instagram stories, as well as on Snapchat. Tip 2: Share Their Canvas to Your Instagram Story

Since launching our Canvas beta, which turns formerly static song pages into mesmerizing video-art showcases, artists all over Spotify have been giving their work new depth with the help of eight-second visual loops. For example, Poppy used her Canvas to heighten the otherworldliness of tracks on her new album, I Disagree, while Billie Eilish added fan art to her songs as a salute to listeners around the world. Canvas sharing is currently available to all Spotify users—listeners and artists alike—so when anyone shares a track from the app to their Instagram Story, the Canvas will show up for all to see. Tip 3: Check Out Their Virtual Events 

During this time, many artists have turned to livestreamed concerts, which they perform from the comfort of their living rooms or backyards. Some have even used these events as a way to make money or raise funds for a charitable cause. These virtual concerts give fans around the world a chance to tune in to an artist’s social channels to hear their favorite songs performed live.

But virtual concerts aren’t the only way to support or engage with musicians. Many are using the power of technology not only to perform, but also to host Q&A sessions, listening parties, talk shows—and in some cases, even offer guitar lessons.
