Spotify Pilots New Music Experience for Young Listeners on Family Plans

Spotify is committed to bringing the best listening experience to all our users, and that includes parents and families. That’s why we’ve introduced a pilot for a Premium music account for young listeners under the age of 13 (or local market equivalent). The managed account pilot will be available exclusively as part of our Premium Family plan in Denmark, New Zealand, and Sweden.

As young listeners embark on a journey of music exploration with a managed account, through this new pilot they will get to enjoy many of the features and functionality that Spotify users know and love, including personalization features that make music discovery on Spotify so exciting and unique.

For parents and guardians, managed accounts enable them to better tailor the content that is available to young listeners via in-app controls—like managing the playback of Canvas, videos, and content labeled as explicit. They will now also be able to decide whether a young listener can play certain artists or tracks with Spotify’s new control feature.

The managed account is also welcome news for parents and guardians who do not want their recommendations getting mixed up with the latest tween tunes—each account under the plan will have separate recommendations, and a young listener’s musical favorites won’t feed into the plan manager’s annual Wrapped results.

Parents or guardians with a Family plan in Denmark, New Zealand, and Sweden can head to their account page in the app and select the option to “Add a listener aged under 13 [or local market equivalent],” then follow the instructions.

For Premium Family plan subscribers who prefer an already curated, kid-friendly listening experience for younger listeners, the Spotify Kids app is also available in Denmark, New Zealand, Sweden, and 11 other markets.

Both the managed account and Spotify Kids app offer an experience designed for listeners under the age of 13 (or local market equivalent), so it is important for parents or guardians to represent a young listener’s age accurately during account creation.

Spotify’s Journey to 200 Million Subscribers

200 M header on black background

This week, as part of Spotify’s quarterly earnings announcement, we shared that we have officially surpassed 200 million subscribers. These fans are the heart of Spotify, and look to us to discover new music and podcasts, stay attuned to culture, and connect with their favorite creators.

Also thanks to our subscribers, we’re able to:

  • Innovate: We invest back into the product, rewarding subscriber loyalty with the very best user experience through features like Blend, Discover Weekly and Wrapped.
  • Expand: We’ve grown with our users, offering life stage and market-tailored plans like Family, Student and Spotify Mini.
  • Scale: We’re now live in over 180 markets, creating a truly global community united by audio.
  • Support: We’ve paid music rights holders, including record labels, publishers, distributors (and more) $30 billion since our founding.* We’re also using our platform and marketing to amplify and support artists, with programs like Frequency, Radar, EQUAL, and the recently launched GLOW.  (*As of December 2021)

Take a look back at a few of the milestones in a journey that began at our 2008 launch.

Spotify Premium Duo Plan Now Available for Spotify Listeners in 14 More Countries

It’s happened to us all. You’re streaming mint and grinding through work at your office when, all of a sudden, the music stops. You click open Spotify to see that your significant other, who’s at home, decided to queue up a guilty-pleasures playlist on the smart speaker to sing along to while prepping dinner. Good news, though, for our users in a number of* Latin American countries: The pilot of Spotify Premium Duo, our two-person subscription plan for couples living under one roof that eliminates the difficulties of sharing an account or devices, will be available in 14 additional markets starting September 4.**

Spotify Premium Duo was created for couples who reside at the same address—and it costs significantly less than having two Premium accounts. On top of that, new users who sign up for a Premium Duo plan get the first three months free.

Best of all, Spotify Premium Duo isn’t just for adding a second user—this plan also unlocks several new perks for your family. In addition to each person having a Premium account (and the personalized experience that comes with it), users get:

  • Duo Mix, an automatically updated playlist that combines the music you and your significant other enjoy together—so domestic disputes over who should DJ are likely to be kept to a minimum.
  • The ability to share your playlist library with each other, with just a tap or click.***
  • An easy interface for managing your accounts, settings, and home device setup.

If you already have a Premium plan and want to add your partner by upgrading to Premium Duo, all you have to do is click here to visit your Account page and follow a few quick, easy steps to change your subscription. Keep in mind that the Premium Duo plan requires that both users reside at the same address.

That’s all it takes to start letting the music and podcasts play—with no unwanted interruptions caused by your significant other commandeering your Spotify account for a dinner-prep karaoke session.

*Offer available in Denmark, Ireland, Poland, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.
**Update October 7, 2019: Spotify Premium Duo is now available in Brazil.
Update March 3, 2020: Spotify Premium Duo is now available in Canada, France, and Japan. New eligible users who sign up for a Premium Duo plan can get the first month free.

Upgraded Spotify Premium Family Plan: Value the Entire Household Will Love

One family member can’t get enough of the new Lion King. Another is into Billie Eilish. All your spouse wants to stream is classic rock. And you? You need a good meditation podcast. Luckily, there’s something for everyone—and individualized access to stream it—on our Spotify Premium Family plan.

With our updated plan, Spotify Premium Family subscribers have on-demand access to 450,000 podcast titles and 50 million tracks of ad-free music. What’s more, parents will now be able to control the Explicit Content Filter setting of all other accounts on their plan (these parental controls are a long-requested feature).

The update is now available in Ireland and will rollout in all markets with Premium Family this fall. Here are a few other things your entire household—parents, siblings, grandparents, maybe even the dog—can look forward to:

  • Family Mix: Families will get exclusive access to a personalized playlist packed with songs the whole family enjoys. Family Mix is updated regularly and you can control who is in each session to optimize your family’s favorite shared listening moments.
  • Family Hub: Billing users can now manage their Family’s settings in one place, including adding or removing family members, keeping your home address up to date, and adjusting your parental controls.
  • Six Accounts: Spotify Premium Family still provides six individual Spotify Premium accounts for family members living under one roof, meaning you’ll keep your own saved music and playlists.

Already a Premium Family user? You’ll be notified as soon as the upgraded Family plan is available in the coming months.
