Spotify and COLORSxSTUDIOS Spotlight African R&B Talent

Maya Amolo, Mbryo, and M^3, and Lukorito in the studio working on a song.

Sub-Saharan Africa is a hotbed of musical talent, especially when it comes to R&B. Our flagship playlist Tantalizers already highlights some of the smoothest acts in the genre, and now, through a partnership with COLORSxSTUDIOS, we are raising the profile of more African R&B artists.

COLORSxSTUDIOS is a unique visual music platform that features artists performing in front of a striking, single-color backdrop with no other people, effects, or visuals. Its goal is to provide a calm, minimalistic stage that gives the artist room to shine. Spotify partnered with the company for a special recording of A COLORS SHOW, the organization’s signature series.

In addition to the live audio-visual experience, Spotify and COLORS partnered to host a writing camp for burgeoning and established songwriters, artists, and producers. Taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, over three days, the camp brought together 18 participants from all over the African diaspora and placed a special emphasis on creative collaboration.

Msaki & Karun writing a song

Msaki and Karun

Several of the songwriters, artists, and producers shared what they’ll be walking away with after the experience.

What’s the secret to a successful collaboration with others while working on a new piece?

Bien, artist and songwriter: The secret is vulnerability, as well as an open heart and mind.

Karun, artist and songwriter: I think it’s getting to a place where you understand where someone’s head is at and where they want to take the session. Then you meet halfway. That’s something I learned from this session from this writing camp: Everybody has their own method and their own way of expressing, and when you can find a way to kind of make that mesh without getting in each other’s way, it can be really beautiful.

Xenia Manasseh, artist and songwriter: Risk and trust, combined. And openness. That’s it. They’ll give you everything that you need. They’ll come with what they have. I’ll come with what I have. And if we’re both willing to be open with each other, there’s no way that we’re not going to create magic.

Manana, artist, songwriter, and producer: Humility. To collaborate well I believe you have to leave all ego and arrogance at the door, put the music first, and make that the priority of the session.

Tay Iwar, artist, songwriter, and producer: Openness, positive criticism, patience, and focus . . . every idea has different viability and validity; some are just more effective.

NNAVY, artist and songwriter: A successful songwriting session is one where you feel inspired; where there’s a kind of bubble surrounding the studio and all the people in it. Words are flowing, people are inspired, and every idea makes sense in that moment. Or sometimes a successful songwriting session is when you’ve had an unfinished or blurry idea, then suddenly your lyrics become clearer and you can finally see the direction the track is taking.

What’s one big takeaway from your songwriting camp experience?

Lisa Oduor-Noah, artist and songwriter: You should always be an avid learner. I think the form a song takes and its melodic qualities are different for so many different artists, especially when you account for different cultural backgrounds. So always be an active learner.

Zowie Kengocha, artist and songwriter: I’ve learned to take risks and freestyle as much as I can, and not be afraid to make mistakes.

Maya Amolo, artist and songwriter: One big takeaway from this experience is that collaboration is everything.

Ukweli, producer: I had a great experience at the writing camp. Getting to work and talk with African artists has reinvigorated my desire to have more collaborations with artists from all over Africa and the diaspora.

Lukorito, producer: There’s value in maintaining your unique identity while collaborating. My most rewarding sessions happened when I trusted my instincts and believed in myself, even when collaborating with more established artists. It reinforced that authenticity is crucial for meaningful collaboration. You have to show up!

MAUIMØON/La Soülchyld, artist, songwriter, and producer: It helped reignite my passion for songwriting. It was great being able to see the other incredible writers and how they think about melodies, lyric choices, and vocal performances. As a producer, it helped me want to focus more on my arrangements and sound selection. It was a great experience that gave me a lot of incredible ideas.

M3,, producer: The importance of collaboration and having fun while creating art. Being in different rooms with so many great musicians and just bouncing ideas off each other was fantastic. It was really encouraging seeing how we perfected someone’s vocal idea or baseline from just an idea in their head. The important thing is that everyone was on the same vibe and enjoyed the moment.

Titose, artist and songwriter: Apart from Kenya being extremely beautiful, and the Spotify and COLORS team being so helpful, it was meeting different artists and songwriters from different parts of Africa. Writing with Berhana, Tay Iwar, Maui, and Xenia sparked my creativity and inspired me to try different songwriting processes. They all had different styles and approaches to writing, which inspired me to try new things in my own music and gave me the desire to pick up a new instrument! It was an eye-opening, wholesome experience that solidified the power we all know music to have—bringing people together!

Mbryo, songwriter: There’s always beauty and magic in collaborating with people of diverse cultures who have different ideas on how good music should sound and feel.

Pickleball Champions Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters Team Up for a Mix to Get Your Head in the Game

Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters posing with their trophy and medals.

Pickleball has seen a massive rise in popularity over the last several years. What was once a game held in backyards and parks is now a thriving international sport with leagues, tournaments, and television coverage.

The pickleball frenzy has even reached Spotify, where we’ve seen a more than 930% increase in “pickleball” playlist streams in May 2023 compared to May 2020. Among some of the category’s most popular game day tracks are “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey, “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire, and “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd

As many professional players will tell you, pickleball is an easy game to learn, but a hard one to master. It requires staying in the right frame of mind to prepare for anything that happens, including long waiting periods. That’s why we’re excited for the launch of the ultimate pickleball mindset playlist curated by two of the sport’s biggest stars, Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters. Since the first Professional Pickleball Association event of the 2023 season, Ben and Anna have each won numerous triple crown titles, including last week, at the Selkirk Texas Opening Rockwell, where Anna Leigh won her third triple crown in a row. In his career, Ben has won more triple crowns than any male professional pickleball player in history.

From the high-tempo and high-confidence Macklemore track “Can’t Hold Us (feat. Ray Dalton)” and “Pump It” by Black Eyed Peas to that renowned Survivor sports banger, “Eye of the Tiger,” the Gameday – Ben J & AL Waters playlist is all you need to get pumped up for your time on the pickleball court.

For the Record caught up with Anna Leigh and Ben to talk about the rise of pickleball and what music gets them ready for a game.

How did you two first get interested in pickleball?

Anna Leigh: My mom actually went pro herself when I started playing sometime in 2017, and I just wanted to be like her. So I decided that I wanted to play pro with her and we began to compete together when I went pro in 2019. Now we play women’s doubles together.

Ben: I first started playing in 2016, when a pickleball court was near where I was playing tennis, and I figured it would be fun to try. At that point I thought of it as more of a game than an actual sport, and when I entered the pro division in my first-ever U.S. Open, I couldn’t believe there were so many good athletes playing this funny game. But as I got better, I grew and I began to get more serious about it in 2017.

What does a day in the life of a pickleball athlete look like?

Anna Leigh: We travel to so many tournaments. It’s crazy. But if I’m not traveling away on a tournament, I’m usually home, training on the pickleball court, training at the gym, or doing some schoolwork.

Pickleball has grown to be quite the international phenomenon! What’s it been like watching from the inside?

Ben: It’s been kind of crazy to compare the scene from when I first started to where it is now. There was some point where I was so used to the explosive growth in pickleball’s popularity that you’d see more news and massive changes week to week or month to month. It’s so great to see how that hasn’t really stopped, but looking from the start of it to now, it’s worlds apart.

Anna Leigh: I kind of like to say that I kind of grew as pickleball grew, because the older I get, the bigger pickleball gets and the more people know about it. So it’s been kind of cool to see its growth as an international sensation, and I feel so grateful to be able to be part of that.

What attributes make a champion pickleball player?

Anna Leigh: One thing I don’t think people really understand about professional pickleball is how mentally tough you have to be to win matches.

Ben: Yeah. There’s some tough breaks in the game and pressure can get to you very easily, and that can lead to a real struggle to play your best. So the more you can rise above that, the more mentally strong you are as a player. And I think Anna Leigh particularly does an amazing job with winning week after week and not letting the pressure get to her. She manages that really well and is amazing with positivity. All things I consider to make a very mentally strong athlete.

Anna Leigh: Also, pickleball tournaments are really long. You could be waiting 30 minutes or  five hours before you start the match, so you have to keep that active mindset up all day long.

What can we expect to find on the Gameday playlist?

Ben: I listen to predominantly late seventies and early eighties classic rock, and I’d say that “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey is my all-time favorite song. It absolutely had to be included. Also my favorite rap song of all time is “Forever,” so that’s why that one’s on there. I mean, you have Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Eminem. That’s just a collaboration of some of the greatest artists of all time.

Anna Leigh: A couple of ones for me have some meaning to them. One of them is “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor. In 2019, my mom and I won our first major pickleball tournament together and it was played right before the finals of our match, so it’s something that I had to include. Another one I added is Justin Timberlake’s “CAN’T STOP THE FEELING!,” and that one was played during that same match. We lost the first game, won the second game, and then it played just as we were about to go into the third.

What piece of advice would you give folks who are starting to pick up the pickleball paddle?

Anna Leigh: I would say just try it. Go to a park, you don’t even need a paddle or even a knowledge of the rules. Pickleball players are very welcoming, especially to newcomers, and we really want to grow the sport. So just go to a park and a lot of people will teach you the game and I’m sure you’ll be hooked from the beginning!

Pick up the paddle and get ready to play by listening to Ben and Anna Leigh’s playlist now.

How Spotify Blend Creates a Connection Between Fans, Friends, and Artists

Whether you’re an artist, a listener, or a bit of both, there’s one thing that has been true since time immemorial: Music should be shared. If you’re grabbing the AUX on a car trip with friends or making a playlist for that special someone, there’s just a certain connection that comes with sharing in the genres and songs that have personal meaning to you.

That’s why in 2021, Spotify took that connection to the next level with Blend, our shared new social listening experience that combines the different tastes of friends and family, as well as fans and artists, into one. With Blend, you can create a personalized playlist that balances what you and your friends like to listen to, merging those music tastes to create something everyone can enjoy.

“Sharing music is a really vulnerable thing—but it also brings you closer together,” says Gianna Pisano, a product marketing manager at Spotify. “Those moments when you realize you and your friends have been listening to Stick Season by Noah Kahan on repeat, or have played boygenius’s new record for five days straight—Blend surfaces all of those insights, puts them together, and does all the work to make a playlist for you and your crew, updated daily. All you have to do is listen and explore.”

Connection in Collaboration

The creation of Blend came about via personalized features that were already in use on a smaller scale.

“Our personalization team was already working on a similar feature that we were excited about,” says Ian VanNest, a senior product designer. “Initially we had used it to connect mixes for listeners on Duo or Family accounts and that ended up being an instant hit. Eventually we decided that extending that functionality to everyone was the way to go.”

At launch, Blend allowed two users at a time to combine musical tastes. But the personalization team realized that more people would make for a merrier experience. So in March 2022, we expanded the number of people who can combine to 10, creating an even more powerful, collaborative tool that allowed even more people to feel connected to one another through their shared love for music.

“Increasing the amount of listeners to make use of Blend was a natural next step,” says Maia Ezratty, an engineer who works on personalization at Spotify. “We don’t only connect over music with one person at a time. We listen to music with our families, go to concerts with our friends, and stream music at the office. I love creating a Blend with a group of friends when we’re together—right away, we have something that represents all of our music tastes that we can play while we hang out. And it’s a conversation starter!”

Beyond that, Blend has offered groups of listeners an opportunity to enjoy the music they have in common and celebrate the differences in musical taste on a granular level.

“Blend has a lot of perks to it, but by far the two best parts of creating a Blend with your friends are finding the artists you have in common and discovering artists that you didn’t know about,” says Ward Ronan, Spotify senior data scientist. “Music has always been a powerful way to bring people together, and Blend not only acknowledges that relationship, but actively helps it grow.

Getting Closer to the Artists We Love

After fans responded enthusiastically to being able to Blend with groups, the personalization team started to think about how to evolve the playlist further. And in an age where it’s easier than ever for fans to connect with celebrities on a more personal level, the team found inspiration for their next innovation. The result was Blend’s new ability to let fans create a deeper bond with artists by combining their tastes.

“We wanted to harness the power of Blend to create a bit of that same sense of connection between celebrities and fans,” explains Maia. “Music taste is so personal, and Blending with our favorite celebrities makes us feel like we’re getting to know them better by giving us a little window into theirs.”

In a few quick steps, fans can now Blend with artists like BTS to discover the songs that get the K-pop group dancing when they’re not onstage, find out which tracks they have in common with Megan Thee Stallion, and—most recently—see how much their overall taste aligns with that of Miley Cyrus. Find a full list of all available Blends here.

Blend has been incredibly popular with fans since it debuted in 2021. Recently, it’s grown significantly in popularity, and since June 2022, the number of Blends with artists has more than doubled. Of the artists fans can Blend with currently, BTS, Post Malone, BLACKPINK, Lizzo, and Stray Kids are the most popular as of May 2023.

Music has always been one of the most powerful ways for artists to share their lives and experiences, and for listeners to connect with one another and feel understood. And through Blend, fans have a magical way to connect with friends, loved ones, and even total strangers, in a shared moment of enjoyment.

Bizarrap is the latest artist to reach the Billions Club. The Argentinian producer has racked up more than 1 billion streams on Spotify of his track “Quevedo: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 52,” which features Spanish rapper Quevedo. We awarded the coveted Billions Club plaque to Bizarrap following the conclusion of his “BZRP Live Tour,” a three-night performance that took place at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo in front of more than 60,000 fans.

From Argentina to the world

This recognition of Bizarrap’s achievement is a reflection of his incredible success on Spotify and of the global respect and admiration he’s earned through his music.

When his single with Quevedo first released last July, it only took 10 days for it to reach the top of Spotify’s global charts, and it made Bizarrap the first Argentinian artist to go number one globally. It later became Argentina’s most-streamed song in 2022, capping off a momentous year for Bizarrap and Quevedo, who also received a plaque for his contribution to the smash song.

The Bzrp Music Sessions series has been a hit on Spotify, with the top 10 most popular sessions featuring some of the biggest names in music. Shakira, Tiago PZK, NATHY PELUSO, L-Gante, Villano Antillano, Eladio Carrion, Nicky Jam, Nicki Nicole, and Aleman have all contributed, helping to catapult the young producer to fame.

Bizarrap’s growth is evident in his Spotify numbers. In just seven years, he went from 1.2 million streams to more than 2.9 billion in 2022. He was also the most-streamed Argentinian artist in the world last year.

Spotify ‘opens up’ for the show

Prior to Bizarrap’s performances in Buenos Aires, Spotify teamed up with the artist and helped fans get in the spirit by launching a collaborative playlist. Listeners were invited to submit songs they wanted to hear for the warm-up, creating a new way to interact with fans before the concert kicked off.

Bizarrap’s success is a testament to his talent and hard work. Congratulations to Bizarrap and Quevedo for their historic achievement—we can’t wait to see what the future holds for these two talented artists.

‘Ya Salam,’ the New Track Bringing Together the Best of Moroccan Beats and UK Drill

cover art for the song ya salam that depicts all 7 artists' faces etched into a giant stone wall

What do you get when you bring seven artists from countries across North Africa to London to collaborate? In our case, the answer is a new drill-inspired hit, “Ya Salam.” But the track is more than a catchy beat featuring smooth rap flows and a gospel choir: At its core, the song represents the culture of the Maghreb diaspora communities.

This production, created in partnership with Spotify’s Noteable studio, is about empowering the next generation of creators, especially the independent artists who make up the music industry in North Africa. “Music in our region is currently living in one of its most exciting eras; it is getting exported and connecting with new fans beyond borders like never before,” shared Naoufal El Amrani, Senior Artist & Label Partnerships Manager for Maghreb. “With our global reach and commitment to helping artists grow their fan bases, we wanted to invest our resources into ‘Ya Salam’ to bring these diverse and incredible creators together in one space to make magic.”

Collaboration will only nurture the next generation of creators and open new opportunities for them. “There is North African representation in U.K. music, but not as much as there should be,” shared Algerian-born, London-based singer-songwriter Miraa May. “So whenever there are other people who are trying to do the same thing [that I want to do], I immediately flock to them.”

Listeners will hear the voices and influences of Miraa May along with Flomine, Smallx, Ard Adz, YP, BLESSED, and Sybka featured throughout the song, which merges Moroccan sounds with U.K. drill and gospel sounds.

“Collaboration is more than just music,” explained YP, who hails from the U.S. but has parents of Moroccan and Filipino descent. “It’s something that we want to instill in the next generation, and the generation after.”

Spotify’s New Fresh Finds Program Helps Independent Artists Build Their Careers

For independent artists, sometimes all it takes is having a song in the right place at the right time for a legion of new fans to discover your music. Spotify’s Fresh Finds playlist serves as this type of launch pad for up-and-coming artists who are beginning their careers.

The playlist, which started in 2016, now has 10 accompanying playlists that have specific focuses, like Fresh Finds: Experimental and Fresh Finds: Latin. These playlists are the place for fan and industry tastemakers alike to find the next big thing in music. Since its launch, Fresh Finds has featured more than 25,000 artists, like Clairo, Omar Apollo, and 100 gecs, who have seen their music take off after their songs were included on the list. Spotify data even shows that artists featured on Fresh Finds see their average monthly listeners increase by 108% in the 28 days following their addition to the playlist.

Now, Spotify is taking its support of these independent artists to the next level with the Fresh Finds program. Building off the success of the playlist, this new program focuses on giving developing artists the tools and educational resources needed for long-term career success.

“Independent artists are at the forefront of what’s next in music,” says Rachel Ring, Music Marketing Manager at Spotify. “It’s vital that we continue to create space and opportunities for this wide-ranging group of artists, meet them where they are, provide tools for them to have agency over their careers, and give them a voice in our marketing campaigns.”

Over the span of six to eight weeks, artists in the program have access to one-on-one mentorship with members of Spotify and a personalized Masterclass to learn how to best use Spotify for Artists tools (like Canvas and Marquee). There will also be collaboration opportunities with songwriters and producers set up in partnership with Noteable, Spotify’s Songwriter and Publishing Relations team. At the end of the program, each of the four groups of artists and producers/songwriters will release an original Spotify Singles track. The collaboration process will be documented through a social content series so fans can follow along as the tracks are created and see the songs come to life.

“It was important for us to build an ecosystem around the artists we’re working with to ensure they have the tools, resources, and support they need to succeed in the short and long term,” continues Rachel. “At the end of this program we want our Fresh Finds artists to leave with a fluency in Spotify’s tools, a connection with other creators, growth across a wide range of new fans, and deeper engagement within their existing fan base.”

Spotify has announced the inaugural four independent artists chosen for the Fresh Finds program. Get to know them below.

Wallice

Wallice, who first started writing songs in middle school, has a sweet and nostalgic sound with a rowdy edge. After completing a year at the New School’s Jazz Vocal Performance program in NYC, the California native moved back to the West Coast to focus on her music. Her first single, 2020’s “Punching Bag,” was influenced by the favorites of her youth (Weezer and Lana Del Rey), as well as her current role models (Vampire Weekend and The Drums). Wallice will be paired with songwriter and producer marinelli and producer Ariel Rechtshaid for the Fresh Finds program’s song collaboration.

Unusual Demont

Unusual Demont is a Wisconsin native whose music is effortlessly forward-thinking. His grandfather, who was the drummer for R&B and soul legend Curtis Mayfield, has influenced his work, but the artist also finds inspiration from other sources, ranging from K-Pop to Frank Ocean. Unusual Demont originally started honing his skills as a rapper, but has shifted to singing with a more eclectic pop sound, which can be heard in his 2020 single “Amber.” Unusual Demont will be collaborating with producer Kieran Watters, professionally known as “The Idiot,” for the Fresh Finds program’s song collaboration.

Julia Wolf

Julia Wolf hails from Queens in New York City. She’s a singer-songwriter and visual artist whose confident and left-of-center vision for pop music has built her an already rabid fan base since she released her music on social media in 2019. The classically trained pianist had her breakout moment with the single “Hoops,” defying genre conventions with her stream-of-conscious lyrics and unforgettable hooks. Julia will be working with songwriter and producer Jackson Foote for the Fresh Finds program’s song collaboration.

EKKSTACY

Canadian singer-songwriter EKKSTACY has found refuge in his music. After a challenging youth that included his parents’ divorce and alcohol abuse, the artist turned to writing and recording music as a way to share his thoughts and feelings. EKKSTACY, who was influenced by the work of Elliott Smith, Bon Iver, and Bedroom, describes his music as fusing elements of indie, post-punk, and synth wave. The artist’s unique sound can be heard in tracks like “i walk this earth all by myself.” EKKSTACY will be paired with Jonny Pierce of The Drums for the Fresh Finds program’s song collaboration.

These artists are only the first to benefit from Fresh Finds, and they won’t be the last. But how to choose who’s next?

“To select these artists, we utilized a combination of data and editorial decision-making, with our Editorial and Artist & Label Partnerships teams choosing artists for the program that are showing momentum both on and off Spotify,” says Rachel. “Ultimately, we don’t have formalized qualification criteria because being a developing artist is undefinable, and career growth can mean different things to different artists. Our gut instincts are based on what we think is the beginning of an amazing career.”

Alongside the program’s launch, Spotify is releasing 13 new regional Fresh Finds playlists in Brazil, Spain, Australia/NZ, UK/IE, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore/Malaysia, Vietnam, India, Italy, Germany/Switzerland/Austria, South Korea, and Turkey to further our mission of disseminating the music of developing artists on a global scale.

Follow the four Fresh Finds artists to be the first to hear their new Spotify Singles, releasing on June 23. In the meantime, discover new music from independent artists in our Fresh Finds playlist below.

Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber Release New Joint Single ‘I Don’t Care’

Four years ago, Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber released their first collaboration, “Love Yourself.” Now, after a few weeks of teasing fans and listeners around the world, the duo is back today with a new joint single, “I Don’t Care.”

Neither Ed nor Justin are strangers to this type of project. Ed Sheeran’s best-known collaboration is his “Perfect Duet” with Beyoncé, followed by the StormzyShape of You” remix. Bieber, a collaboration king, has worked with the likes of Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi (“Despacito Remix”), as well as Nicki Minaj (“Beauty and a Beat”). Separately, both artists are stars in their own right. Together, they’re nothing short of a supernova.

Spotify and Ellen DeGeneres are cut from the same cloth. We share an insatiable appetite for new music, and we’re both passionate about using the power of music to build culture and community. Now, The Ellen Degeneres Show and Spotify are coming together in an exciting partnership that will create opportunities for new voices to be discovered and enjoyed by millions of listeners.

As Ellen herself said, “I’m so excited to partner with Spotify on my very own music hub because music truly makes everything better. Well, music and salt.”

Spotify users can now find an all-new content Ellen hub based on her incredibly popular show—from the music of artists on her show, to her popular “Ellen on the Go” podcast, and beyond. The innovative partnership, which launched Friday, December 7, puts Ellen center stage on our platform, curating fresh, new Spotify content that old and new fans alike will love.

We caught up with several of the Spotify band members behind the partnership from across the company to learn about what Ellen and Spotify fans can expect in the year ahead.

What excites you the most about this awesome new partnership with Ellen?

Jamie Herbert, Spotify Head of North American Marketing: Ellen is such a beloved figure around the world, but she’s also a huge music fan and tastemaker, helping to launch the careers of countless new and emerging artists over the years.

We’re excited to help generate exposure for all the artists Ellen is passionate about, whether it’s global music stars or the next big thing. We’ve created a Spotify-first dedicated hub for all of Ellen’s fans to visit and hear what she is listening to right now, including custom playlists of all the artists appearing on the show updated on a regular basis. We’ll also be featuring her Ellen on the Go podcast and in 2019 adding exclusive video clips from the show.

What was the original idea spark for this first-of-its-kind collaboration?

Alex Bodman, Spotify Global Executive Creative Director: This is the first time we’re doing such a high-profile partnership, so I began to think about how we might pitch the creative opportunity to Ellen and her team and what it would look like. I wrote down a few words on a piece of paper. One of them was “irreverent.” One was “progressive.” One was “energy.” Then I wrote the phrase “passionate about culture.” You could take all of these attributes and use them to describe the Spotify brand, but you could just as easily use them to describe the Ellen brand. What you have is two brands that align in a really authentic, natural way with very different audiences.

Richard Frankel, Spotify Global Creative Director, Partner Solutions: Both Ellen and Spotify use our platforms to amplify exposure for new voices, music, and culture trends. We’re focused on establishing content partnerships that help us give a million creative artists the opportunity to live off their art, and that gives billions of fans the opportunity to enjoy and be inspired by it. Additionally, working closely with Ellen will be our first experience with marketing to an older audience.

What is it about Spotify and Ellen that makes this an ideal pairing?

Xavier “X” Jernigan, Head of Cultural Partnerships: It’s ideal because it enables us to partner with an influencer to curate an entire category and hub around their brand, and it’s the first time we’ve done so. Ellen’s brand is deeply interwoven with music, as evidenced by the care with which she handpicks musical talent, and by the ways she integrates music into her show. Bringing in specific influencers like this to Spotify is perfect because it opens us up to more opportunities to speak to fans—and an even wider audience—where influencers have already cultivated trust.

Frankel: Ellen represents that embrace of just loving what you love and freely expressing it. Another thing she does really well is find and celebrate lesser-known voices. She takes chances on them in ways that Spotify aims to do. It echoes how we help unknown songs become discovered and, many times, turn into hit songs. On Spotify, a hit song can come out of nowhere, and Ellen has that same unique exposure power. She finds the yodeler in Walmart and turns them into a superstar. We’re so aligned on amplifying those voices, so I think this is going to work really well between us. We share an affinity for the underdog who breaks through in unexpected ways.

What does this groundbreaking partnership say about the evolution of Spotify, and about the evolution of the Ellen brand—and how nimble both brands are at connecting with new and existing audiences?

Herbert: Through this partnership, we can tap into Ellen’s passion for music and provide innovative ways to connect her loyal fanbase with artists across the full spectrum—from undiscovered talent to household names—all through a custom Ellen destination on Spotify.

What can fans look forward to over the next year?

Jernigan: Ellen and her team have curated four exclusive Spotify playlists that fans can look forward to. Loved By Ellen features music that Ellen is loving right now. Twitch’s Favorites is DJ Twitch’s top dance jams. Ellen Show Favorites is a sneak peek of songs played just for guests. And Performed On Ellen highlights artists who have performed on Ellen.

Bodman: Ellen’s playlists will be endless because they’ll be constantly updated. They’ll include the artists and songs Ellen is currently listening to. Some of it will be Bruce Springsteen classics and some of it will be the breakout rapper who just played her show last week. The beauty is that listeners will discover new music and rediscover favorites, all through Ellen’s eclectic, one-of-a-kind lens.

Sam and Moa Had Never Met, But Spotify’s Soundtrap Helped Them Create Something Awesome

It all started with a beat. Smooth, slinky, and undeniably chill, “Don’t Miss Me” has the sweet flow of any world-class pop hit. But if you haven’t heard of the new duo behind the song, $AMoA, it’s for good reason–they hadn’t even heard of each other until Soundtrap, Spotify’s new platform brought them together.

Moa Michaeli, a pop songwriter and artist, and Sam Alaish, a rock songwriter with a background in classical cello, live in different parts of Sweden. Using Soundtrap for the very first time, they came together remotely to create something reflective of both their talents.

“We were paired together by Spotify with the goal of writing a song using Soundtrap in three days,” Moa explains. “Sam and I had never met before. Before using Soundtrap, I’d never thought about the idea of working with someone who lives in a different time zone.”

With Soundtrap, we hope to help erase borders and make collaboration easy and accessible for artists and creators across the globe. For Sam and Moa, it was as natural as wearing pajamas on the couch—here’s more of what they shared with Spotify about working together.

How did “Don’t Miss Me” get off the ground?

Sam: We started off by talking on the phone. We talked about ideas and tried to find the right approach to get started. We decided who was going to do what. It all started with a beat, and that laid the groundwork for what the song became.

It’s hard to start with a blank canvas, but once you add just one element, it’s easy to go from there. After that, everything just flowed.

Have you collaborated with other people before?

Sam: Yes, but not remotely, and not with a stranger.

Moa: Exactly!

What’s the main difference between in-person and remote collaboration?

Moa: When you write in person, you can’t try your ideas out first before you present them to the people you’re working with. But when you work remotely, you can collect your thoughts and think things through before you present them.

Sam: You can present much bigger ideas.

Since you hadn’t met, did you find working together awkward or weird?

Moa: Not really. I was at home with a fever, so I was speaking to him from my couch while wearing pajamas. I felt pretty comfortable!

Sam: I felt bad calling Moa because she was so sick! But we had an initial comfort level. No communication problems.

Moa: I felt like I already knew him. That was pretty cool.

What was your experience using Soundtrap for the first time?

Moa: For me, collaborating in person can be a bit tricky, because I’m reserved and shy. Soundtrap helped me let go of my fears. This was my first time working to produce a song, and so Soundtrap felt like a game-changer.

How do you now use Soundtrap?

Sam: I’ve made some demos on it.

Moa: I use it for myself when I get an idea—I usually record a voice memo. But now I record it directly into the studio on Soundtrap. That makes it easier to invite someone to come work on it, or just use it myself to add a synthesizer, or a beat. It just keeps the creative process going.

How will Soundtrap change the way artists collaborate across the globe?

Sam: The more seamless you make things work for artists, and the more you create a flow, that helps allow you to work with anyone. Soundtrap gives you everything you need. So if you’re in New York, and another person is in Stockholm, Soundtrap makes it easier to just make things happen right now.

Would you work with each other again?

Sam: Yeah, I want to!

Moa: Yay! Let’s make it happen.
