Music Videos Rolling Out in Beta to Premium Spotify Users Across Select Markets

In the early neon-infused ’80s, music videos burst onto TV screens, turning some of the most beloved songs into visual experiences that redefined the way fans connected with artists around the world. Since then, not only have music videos become one of the many ways that fans discover and fall in love with artists, but iconic videos have become part of pop culture, igniting conversations and influencing style.

They’re a powerful way for fans to discover and connect with music, and a natural fit to live on Spotify. That’s why we’re excited to launch music videos in beta for Spotify Premium users across 11 markets, adding another way to enhance the artist-to-fan connection.

Spotify is where fans go to dive deeper into an artist’s music. So whether you’re a superfan who wants to rewatch the videos you love and share them with friends, or a casual fan on the lookout for new releases, music videos create a new point of connection with artists.

“So many times in my own experience and for countless others, music videos play a key role in hooking you: taking you from being a listener to leaning in and becoming a fan,” says Charlie Hellman, Vice President and Head of Music Product at Spotify. “They’re an important part of so many artists’ tool kits, and it’s a natural fit for them to live in the same place that more than half a billion people choose to listen to music.”

Through Spotify features like Canvas, Clips, Artist Bios, Live Events, and Merch, artists are able to connect with new fans and loyal listeners in meaningful ways. Canvas visuals in particular have been shown to drive engagement, with users sharing, saving, or adding songs to playlists at a higher rate.

The beta version of music videos on Spotify begins rolling out today with a limited catalog of music videos, including hits from global artists like Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat, and Ice Spice, or local favorites like Aluna and Asake.

How to watch music videos on Spotify:

  • We’ll begin to roll out music videos from a select catalog for Premium users in the U.K., Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya
  • Premium listeners in those markets can head to their iOS, Android, desktop, or TV device and select the “Switch to Video” toggle for supported music tracks. Then, the music video will start playing from the beginning within the Now Playing view.
  • Want to return to background listening? Simply press “Switch to Audio.”.
  • You can even watch the music video in full screen by turning your mobile device to watch in landscape mode.

In this beta launch, we’ll continue to innovate and iterate based on feedback from both users and artists. Stay tuned as we hope to expand the catalog of music videos and bring the feature to more users and countries.

The Fifth Season

Narrated by Robin Miles

The first book in the highly acclaimed Broken Earth Trilogy, N. K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season takes readers to the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon.

Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, a woman living an ordinary life in a small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter. Meanwhile, the mighty empire Sanze collapses, and most of its citizens are murdered to serve a madman’s vengeance. And worst of all, across the heart of the vast continent known as the Stillness, a great red rift has been torn into the heart of the earth, spewing enough ash to darken the sky for years or even centuries.

Now Essun must pursue the wreckage of her family through a deadly, dying land. Essun doesn’t care if the world falls apart around her. She’ll break it herself, if she must, to save her daughter.

Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization

Written and narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson

Bringing his cosmic perspective to civilization on Earth, Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Starry Messenger shines new light on the crucial fault lines of our time—war, politics, religion, truth, beauty, gender, and race—in a way that stimulates a deeper sense of unity for us all.

In a time when our political and cultural views feel more polarized than ever, Tyson provides a much-needed antidote to what divides us, while making a passionate case for the twin chariots of enlightenment: a cosmic perspective and the rationality of science.

With crystalline prose, Starry Messenger walks us through a scientific palette that sees and paints the world differently. From insights on resolving global conflict to reminders of how precious it is to be alive, Tyson reveals an array of brilliant and beautiful truths that apply to us all, informed and enlightened by knowledge of our place in the universe.

And so starts an incredible journey through Middle-earth that will test Frodo’s courage, his friendships, and his heart. But the Ring corrupts all who bear it. Can Frodo destroy it, or will it destroy him?

The Hate U Give

Written by Angie Thomas

Narrated by Bahni Turpin

Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, Angie Thomas‘ searing debut about an ordinary girl in extraordinary circumstances addresses issues of racism and police violence with intelligence, heart, and unflinching honesty.

The Hate U Give introduces us to 16-year-old Starr Carter as she moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend, Khalil, at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death becomes a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. But what everyone wants to know is: What really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does or doesn’t say could upend her community and even endanger her life.

How To Make Spotify’s Sleep Timer Part of Any Bedtime Routine

Listening to music or podcasts before bed is a great way to wind down after a long day. But not everyone wants to wake up in the middle of the night to the sounds of a hype pop track from their Discover Weekly playlist. That’s why Spotify has a built-in Sleep Timer, which helps you ease into a peaceful sleep by allowing you to decide how long your music or podcast episode plays before it automatically stops.

For those across mobile devices who want to give the Sleep Timer a try, we have a few tips on how to use this handy feature:

  1. To find the Sleep Timer, tap the Now Playing bar to bring up the full Now Playing screen.
  2. While listening to podcasts, you can access the Sleep Timer directly on the Now Playing view by tapping the moon icon to the right of the play button. For music, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and scroll to the bottom of the menu where you can tap on the Sleep Timer option.
  3. Select how long you want your tunes to play. You can choose to have the music go for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour, or until the end of the track.
  4. An on-screen notification will say “OK, your sleep timer is set.”
  5. If you want to check how much time you have left on your Sleep Timer, just tap the three-dot menu, then scroll down and you’ll see the time alongside the Sleep Timer logo.

Once you’re all squared away with that, you’ll be loading up your favorite songs to help whisk you off to dreamland in no time. Sleep tight!

Make Your At-Home Dance Party Complete With Philips Hue + Spotify

If you’ve ever used a Philips Hue bulb or lamp, you know why these Wi-Fi-connected lights are so beloved. They let you use your smartphone or voice to control their brightness and colors, creating dramatic scenes that you can save as a preset, or even assign to a schedule or routine.

But there’s one other feature that we especially love: linking your Philips Hue bulbs to your Spotify account. Once the lights are synced, they’ll flash, dim, brighten, and change color right along with the beat, mood, genre, and tempo of any music you’re streaming.

Want to make your living room feel like the club ? Need a vibey wake-up call in the morning? Spotify’s Philips Hue integration turns your music into an experience you can hear, see, and feel.

To get started, you’ll need an iPhone or Android device, some Philips Hue color-capable lights, a Philips Hue Bridge, and any audio device.

Once you have those all set up, just follow these simple instructions to integrate Spotify with your Hue lights and get the party started:

  1. From the home screen of the Philips Hue smartphone app, select the Sync icon at the bottom, then tap the Get Started button.
  2. When the app asks how you want to sync your lights, tap the Spotify account button and then tap Next.
  3. Follow the prompts to connect your Spotify account with the Philips Hue app. When the process is complete, an on-screen notification will say “Success!”
  4. Afterward, if you have lights in multiple areas, you can choose which rooms or zones you want Spotify to sync with. You can also select the Google or Alexa voice assistants to use with this integration.
  5. Once you’re all set, you just have to start playing a song on Spotify and then tap the Sync button in the Philips Hue app to transform your space into a symphony of light and sound.

How to Sort Your Favorite Songs With Spotify’s New Genre and Mood Filters

Your “Liked Songs” on Spotify are a collection of you—spanning every genre you’ve ever enjoyed and each mood you’ve experienced. Some days, you might be looking to play the entire eclectic mix, while on others, you’re searching for a certain feel.

Starting today, Spotify is rolling out a new way for our listeners to easily sort their “Liked Songs” collection for every mood and moment through new Genre and Mood filters. With this new feature, listeners with at least 30 tracks in their collections will be able to filter their favorite songs by up to 15 personalized mood and genre categories.

Here’s how to turn on (and off) the new filters:

  • Go to “Your Library” and tap on “Liked Songs.”
  • Then, tap one of the filters at the top of the playlist header to display all the tracks that fall under that mood or genre.
  • When you’re ready to move to another mood or genre, simply tap the “X” next to the genre or mood to disable the filter and return to your full “Liked Songs” collection.

You can still add new favorites to “Liked Songs” (and even remove them) in the same way as usual, by tapping the “heart” button. But as your tastes change or if you add and remove songs, your genre and mood filters will also update based on the content of your collection.

This feature will be rolling out over the coming weeks to Free and Premium listeners on Android and iOS devices in English-speaking markets including the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

From genres like dancehall, J-pop, and bluegrass to moods like pump up, moody, and soulful, your favorite songs will now be the best representation of you in any given moment.

How to Share Your Favorite Songs with Your Child Through Shared Playlists on the Spotify Kids App

Since we first unveiled the Spotfy Kids app in October 2019 for Spotify Premium Family subscribers, young listeners have been able to explore a playground of sound and begin a lifelong love of music through a standalone app designed just for them. We’ve also been listening to parents during this time and have been committed to providing increased customization within the app. We started by giving parents the ability to block individual songs or audio stories in the app as well as giving them access to their kids’ “Listening History.” Now, we’re making it possible for parents to share the music they love—from the songs they grew up playing to the family’s dance party playlist—and further curate their child’s audio experience with Shared Playlists on Spotify Kids.

Being able to share your love of music with your children may feel as essential as teaching them to ride a bike. Shared Playlists—a highly-requested and pin-protected parental settings feature—lets parents share music playlists they’ve created in their Spotify account directly with their child in Spotify Kids, allowing them to further curate their child’s listening experience.

We know that parents often have their own views on which content is and is not appropriate for their kids. The Shared Playlists feature gives parents more control, supplementing the growing library of more than 300,000 kid-friendly tracks and 1,300 playlists on Spotify Kids—all handpicked by our experienced team of editors.

Here’s how to share playlists with your little one using the Spotify Kids app:

  1. Create a playlist of your family’s favorite tunes on the Spotify app (or choose one you made in the past). Make sure to review the lyrics, album cover artwork, and any possible explicit tracks (which will be marked with an ‘E’).
  2. If there are individual songs within the playlist you don’t want to share with your kid, remove them from your playlist in the Spotify app.
  3. Next, head to the parental settings section of the Spotify Kids app and enter your four-digit pin.
  4. Tap the “Shared Playlists” section in your kids’ profile. Then, you’ll be able to see your Spotify playlists and select the ones you want to share with each child.
  5. The first time you do this, a pop-up screen will appear to confirm that you want to share the playlist. After, the child can access the playlist on their homepage from a new “Shared with You” section.

Note that if you update the playlist in the Spotify app, the playlist in Spotify Kids will be automatically updated too. Plus, you can revisit the PIN-protected parental settings on Spotify Kids at any time to remove a playlist, access your child’s listening history, and block or unblock tracks.
