Spotify’s Sizzling 2023 Songs of Summer Are Here

a graphic treatment showing suns and clouds

We’ve been waiting all summer, speculating and ruminating on what hot tracks would rise to the top as the songs of the summer. And now we have our answers for what hits have dominated during the past few months.

Drumroll please . . .

Globally, the most-streamed song of the summer is Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s smash hit, “Ella Baila Sola.”

In the U.S., the most-streamed song is Morgan Wallen’s croon-worthy track “Last Night,” the first country song to claim the title on Spotify.

Digging in for a global look

“Ella Baila Sola” topped the chart this summer. Eslabon Armado, an American música Mexicana group, is no stranger to success, with many music awards under their belt. And we knew Peso Pluma was a talent to watch when we declared him a Spotify RADAR artist earlier this year. Three other tracks of Peso Pluma’s also made it into the global Top 30 list this summer: “La Bebe – Remix,” “Peso Pluma: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 55,” and “El Azul.” It’s a big moment for the música Mexicana genre, which has seen 430% growth on Spotify over the past five years, globally.

Coming in hot as the second-most-streamed song globally is Bad Bunny’s “WHERE SHE GOES,” while Jung Kook and Lattos “Seven” sits at number three.

Antonio Vazquez, Head of U.S. Latin Editorial at Spotify, explained why it’s no surprise that música Mexicana is taking hold of the charts. “Watching the rise of ‘Ella Baila Sola’ to become the global song of the summer has been truly exhilarating,” he said. “It’s a testament to how música Mexicana is not only capturing hearts but also dominating the international music scene and becoming one of the top growth-driving genres globally. This feels like an important milestone, and it’s only getting started.”

Latin music’s popularity has consistently and remarkably risen worldwide. “It’s not just about catchy beats anymore; artists are successfully infusing their music with their personal stories, experiences, and a sense of cultural pride,” said Antonio. “This authenticity, combined with cross-genre collaborations and a globalized music landscape, is contributing to the unstoppable growth of Latin music.” Antonio also noted that “the strong appeal of ‘Ella Baila Sola’ can be attributed to its unique blend of elements that resonate across cultures—the vibrant trombone-driven sound and the infectious requinto intro create a captivating experience.”

Summer party in the USA

In the U.S., listeners were feeling a little bit country this summer, with Morgan Wallen’s track “Last Night” as the most-streamed song. “‘Last Night’ has all the trappings of a hit that transcends genre,” explained Rachel Whitney, Head of Editorial, Nashville. “It kicks off with a storyline that keeps you guessing, and lands in the catchiest hook. It pulls in audiences from across the popular-music spectrum, with elements of R&B, pop, and country all in one. Between the beat, the hook, and the stripped-down guitar intro and Wallen’s signature southern drawl, it’s a song that can get people dancing or gathered around a campfire.”

Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola” is the second-most-streamed song in the U.S., and Taylor Swift’s Cruel Summer” holds down the number three position.

Overall, listeners had a lot of love for country hits as they splashed the summer away: Five songs from the genre made it onto the U.S. Top 20 list. As Rachel shared, this isn’t so surprising as summer is the season when listening really peaks for country fans—country songs are perfect for road trips and lake days. Morgan landed two more hits on the list with “You Proof” and “Wasted On You,” while “Fast Car” by Luke Combs and “Something in the Orange” by Zach Bryan also made the cut.

“Artists like Morgan Wallen, Zach Bryan, and Taylor Swift—with the release of her country album Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)—have driven a surge in the popularity of country music over the summer, especially with younger fans,” said Rachel.

Sunny trends taking over the states

Here’s what else was trending in the U.S. this summer.

Tinder and Spotify Couple Up for Match-Worthy Anthems and Spotify Premium Trial Offer

Love for an artist or song can bring people together—whether as friends or something more. So in 2016, Spotify launched an integration with Tinder that allows members of the dating app to add an “anthem” to their profile, effectively showcasing one song that gives potential new matches a glimpse into their musical world.

Fans have since fallen in love with the feature (and with each other). And since there’s plenty of music to stream together outside of that one anthem, we’re making three to four months of Spotify Premium available to Tinder Gold and Platinum members on Android devices in over 30 markets.*

In honor of this offering, we’re taking a look at some of the top trends** and anthems that are making members’ hearts skip a beat.

  • In the U.S., the most Liked anthem was “Last Night” by Morgan Wallen.
  • Among Gen Z, “Kill Bill” by SZA, “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus, “Creepin (with The Weeknd and 21 Savage)” by Metro Boomin, and “Anti-Hero” by Taylor Swift were some of the most popular Tinder anthems globally.
  • Singles over 40 in the U.S. have been keeping up with the younger generations’ music by featuring songs like “WAP” by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, “Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy, and “Glimpse of Us” by Joji on their Tinder profiles.
  • In Japan, NewJeans dominated the top three most Liked anthems for women aged 25-30 with their hit songs “OMG,” “Hype Boy,” and “Ditto.”
  • In Europe, millennials (aged 30-40) brought the nostalgia with anthems like Miguel’sSure Thing” (Germany and the U.K.), Arctic Monkeys’Do I Wanna Know” (Spain), and Nina Simone’sFeeling Good” (France).
  • In North America, the most Liked anthem for women aged 30-40 was “Rich Flex” by Drake in Canada, “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa in Mexico, and throwback “Santeria” by Sublime in the U.S.

Country Star Morgan Wallen Returns Home for a Special Performance at His High School

Morgan Wallen performing onstage at a show

Last night, Morgan Wallen proved you can go home again. The Tennessee native visited his alma mater, Gibbs High School, and performed an intimate show for the crowd in Corrytown on the school’s baseball field.

Spotify partnered with the country star for this special performance to celebrate the release of his new album, One Thing At A Time. Show attendees included Gibbs High School faculty, the 2023 senior class, the baseball team, and more local guests.

“You cannot deny that his music has connected with listeners at a core level and is among the most popular with Spotify users—particularly in the U.S.,” said Brittany Schaffer, Head of Nashville Label Partnerships and Music Strategy. “Morgan is introducing a new generation of listeners to country music, which makes this album release an even more exciting moment for the visibility of the genre. We’re thrilled to be able to celebrate the release of this new album with him.”

Morgan’s roots are an important theme in his music, and this homecoming show gave his Tennessee fans a chance to experience his new songs live. Guests could also create their own Gibbs HS baseball card, write letters on album-themed postcards to mail to loved ones, and enjoy other fun activities like cornhole.

“Morgan wears his heart on his sleeve as an artist and songwriter, and he brings fans into his world through his lyrics,” said Miller Guth, Artist & Label Partnerships Manager for Nashville. “We wanted to do just that: bring fans to an influential location of his past where they’ll get to know him even more and witness an unforgettable performance.”

Spotify’s Hot Country Playlist Turns Five and Hits Over 5 Billion Streams

If you’re in the mood for the latest and greatest country hits, you don’t have to look further than Spotify’s Hot Country playlist. Since its 2015 launch, it has amassed 6 million followers and seen more than 5 billion streams, making it one of the most influential playlists for the country music genre today. This month, Hot Country is doing a little dance to celebrate its five-year anniversary—so we’re taking a moment to tip our hats to some of the groundbreaking artists who have risen to the top of the playlist over the last half decade.

Top Female Artist

First up, Maren Morris—the Texas native has been the most-streamed female country artist on Hot Country and consistently ranked in the top 10 for most-streamed country artists in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

Singers with Staying Power

Florida Georgia Line has been a fan favorite and remained in the top five for most-streamed country artists since 2015, ranking at number one in 2017 and 2018.

Top Song

Dan + Shay are the duo behind the top-streamed country track of both 2019 (“Tequila”) and 2020 (“10,000 Hours (with Justin Bieber)”).

Legends Holding Strong

While we saw many newcomers blossom on the playlist, fans still love listening to legends—Brooks & Dunn saw their streams grow by 40% after being added to Hot Country.

Exclusive and Enhanced Content

What has made Hot Country such a success over these five years? Aside from a weekly rotation of the genre’s freshest hits, the playlist features enhanced album video content and cover stories that fans can’t get anywhere else. These exclusive experiences allow listeners to go deeper into new releases, artist-curated playlist takeovers, and exciting live events such as the Hot Country Live concert series and Fans First events.

Plus, Spotify’s love of country is as expansive as the great outdoors—and we mean that literally. In 2018, Hot Country worked with renowned crop circles artist Stan Herd to produce four custom-designed crop circles featuring top artists and the Spotify Hot Country logo.

Community Experiences

Each year, we’re finding new creative and impactful ways to celebrate country artists. Hot Country works closely with the Nashville community to host events and create partnerships. One favorite is the Spotify House at the Country Music Association’s annual CMA Fest. In addition to being a great experience for fans, the event allows us to showcase both rising artists and established stars with our signature Hot Country flair.

With 2020 came unexpected and challenging times, and Hot Country made efforts to ensure that the country community was a top priority. From virtual gatherings to a new social series called The Drop In (that featured country stars Tim McGraw and Morgan Wallen), we found a way to bring together fans and artists. We also partnered with the Nashville-based charity Music Health Alliance as part of the Spotify COVID-19 Music Relief project.

Hot Country has grown a lot in the past five years, and it will continue to do so thanks to its dedicated fan base. If you’ve yet to listen, it’s time to dust off your boots and hit play on Hot Country.
