It’s a new year, and that means it’s time to predict which artists will make their mark in 2024. Continuing our annual Artists To Watch campaign, we’ve expanded the list to feature even more artists across many more genres.

You can also find all of our picks rounded up in one convenient spot with our brand-new Artists To Watch playlist.

You’ll find Musica Mexicana crooner Chino Pacas among Viva Latino’s picks, and introspective hitmaker Teddy Swims included in Pop Rising’s selections. How Spotify’s Playlists Captured the Biggest Music Trends of 2023

With another year coming to a close, Spotify is back with your personalized Wrapped, our annual recap of your listening highlights from the past 12 months that includes your top songs, artists, and podcasts, as well as your most distinct streaming habits. But we’re also taking a step back and looking at 2023’s biggest music trends on Spotify.

Thanks to the in-the-know editors responsible for creating our editorial playlists as part of the Global Curation Groups, the most iconic musical moments of the year were reflected on Spotify. Whether it was blockbuster movie soundtracks that grabbed the world’s attention, viral social media moments that bubbled up to the mainstream, or classic genres finding new fans in Gen Z, our experts were on top of it all.

For the Record sat down with our editorial team and got the scoop.

Peso Pluma and Música Mexicana go mainstream

RADAR US artist Peso Pluma made himself known to the world in March with his feature on Eslabon Armado’s “Ella Baila Sola.” Fast-forward to now, and that song is one of the top-five most-streamed songs of 2023 globally—and is about to hit Spotify’s Billions Club. Meanwhile, the Música Mexicana genre at large has enjoyed a surge in popularity, dominating the global charts this summer.

Folk rising

In 2023, a slew of indie artists emerged with folk-inspired albums including Mitski, Toro Y Moi, and boygenius. Plus, we heard new folk voices like Searows and 2024 Best New Artist Noah Kahan

Shoegaze returns courtesy of Gen Z

Shoegaze has been around since the late ’80s, but it experienced a resurgence in 2023 among Gen Z, who found new bands like Wisp as well as aughts stalwarts like Panchiko.

Over the past year, the genre has thrived within various Gen Z internet communities that have fostered pockets of interest and given birth to exciting new acts. Perhaps unknowingly, the emerging class of neo-shoegaze artists is contributing to genre diffusion, blending techniques from various music genres to create something fresh and unique.

Rema carries Afrobeats into Spotify’s Billions Club

Rema has been a hitmaker in Africa since 2019, but it was a collaboration with Selena Gomez on “Calm Down (Remix)” that shot him to international fame in 2023. The global smash earned the Afrobeats star a Grammy nomination, as well as a spot in our highly coveted Billions Club, making “Calm Down” the first African artist-led track to do so.

Taylor Swift’s eras on tour

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour kicked off in March and was the live-music event of the year. Taylor not only picked songs from all 10 of her studio albums to perform in a stunning three-hour show, but she also set aside time each night for acoustic performances of two surprise songs. And according to Taylor’s rules, no two songs could be repeated unless she messed it up the first time. To capture this epic moment, we collected all of the surprise songs in a playlist, which was updated every weekend during the U.S. leg of her tour.

Troye Sivan and Hyunjin’s IRL friendship

This past summer, Troye Sivan posted a TikTok that went viral about trying to find Hyunjin of Stray Kids. We joined in on the fun with a playlist and they eventually collabed on a remix of “Rush,” which also featured PinkPantheress.

Peggy Gou takes house music to the top of the charts

It’s a Barbie world

Ahead of the Barbie release this summer, we saw “Barbiecore” aesthetics manifest in the pop culture zeitgeist. Once we got word that Barbie was going to feature a star-studded soundtrack with hits like Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, and Aqua’s “Barbie World” and Dua Lipa’s “Dance The Night,” we brought all things Barbie to life on Spotify through the “pinkification” of several playlist covers, new editorial playlists, and partner playlists.

Hyper techno surges

There was an influx of high-BPM dance pop songs in general, and with it came a new wave of tracks that showcased a harder sound using classic techno and big room beats and basslines. We saw a surge in streams—especially from European Gen Zs—of techno-infused songs like Niklas Dee’s “Not Fair,” Creeds’ “Push Up,” and BENNETT’s “Vois sur ton chemin.”

Jersey Club is everywhere

Jersey Club production became ubiquitous not only in U.S. hip-hop but around the world. We also saw the genre’s influence find its way into K-Pop and thoughtful electronic music. Pioneers such as DJ Smallz 732, UNIIQU3, and Cookiee Kawaii were tapped to remix some of 2023’s biggest hits, and newcomers such as Kanii, keltiey, and Lay Bankz staked their claims as names to watch.

Tyla’s turns her viral moment into crossover success

South Africa’s Amapiano sound has been winning the hearts of electronic and dance fans after TikTok dances and DJ mixes helped it go viral in 2020. In 2023, RADAR Africa artist Tyla took her career to the next level, blending her R&B sound with Amapiano and South African dance genre Bacardi house on her hit song “Water.” After Spotify Africa’s partnership with the Giants of Africa Festival—a basketball event in Rwanda where Tyla’s viral dance was first seen—many posted their own versions of the dance challenge on social media, which led to “Water” skyrocketing around the world and earning a feature from Travis Scott on the remix.

This trend in country music had a slow build that reached new heights with the release of RADAR US artist Zach Bryan’s American Heartbreak in 2022, and took off 2023 with hits like Dylan Gossett’s Coal.” This acoustic, gritty sound was typically reserved for alternative country and folk playlists in the past, but it has fully moved into the mainstream with songs that have been fan favorites across our flagship playlists.

Spotify’s Hot Country Playlist Turns Five and Hits Over 5 Billion Streams

If you’re in the mood for the latest and greatest country hits, you don’t have to look further than Spotify’s Hot Country playlist. Since its 2015 launch, it has amassed 6 million followers and seen more than 5 billion streams, making it one of the most influential playlists for the country music genre today. This month, Hot Country is doing a little dance to celebrate its five-year anniversary—so we’re taking a moment to tip our hats to some of the groundbreaking artists who have risen to the top of the playlist over the last half decade.

Top Female Artist

First up, Maren Morris—the Texas native has been the most-streamed female country artist on Hot Country and consistently ranked in the top 10 for most-streamed country artists in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

Singers with Staying Power

Florida Georgia Line has been a fan favorite and remained in the top five for most-streamed country artists since 2015, ranking at number one in 2017 and 2018.

Top Song

Dan + Shay are the duo behind the top-streamed country track of both 2019 (“Tequila”) and 2020 (“10,000 Hours (with Justin Bieber)”).

Legends Holding Strong

While we saw many newcomers blossom on the playlist, fans still love listening to legends—Brooks & Dunn saw their streams grow by 40% after being added to Hot Country.

Exclusive and Enhanced Content

What has made Hot Country such a success over these five years? Aside from a weekly rotation of the genre’s freshest hits, the playlist features enhanced album video content and cover stories that fans can’t get anywhere else. These exclusive experiences allow listeners to go deeper into new releases, artist-curated playlist takeovers, and exciting live events such as the Hot Country Live concert series and Fans First events.

Plus, Spotify’s love of country is as expansive as the great outdoors—and we mean that literally. In 2018, Hot Country worked with renowned crop circles artist Stan Herd to produce four custom-designed crop circles featuring top artists and the Spotify Hot Country logo.

Community Experiences

Each year, we’re finding new creative and impactful ways to celebrate country artists. Hot Country works closely with the Nashville community to host events and create partnerships. One favorite is the Spotify House at the Country Music Association’s annual CMA Fest. In addition to being a great experience for fans, the event allows us to showcase both rising artists and established stars with our signature Hot Country flair.

With 2020 came unexpected and challenging times, and Hot Country made efforts to ensure that the country community was a top priority. From virtual gatherings to a new social series called The Drop In (that featured country stars Tim McGraw and Morgan Wallen), we found a way to bring together fans and artists. We also partnered with the Nashville-based charity Music Health Alliance as part of the Spotify COVID-19 Music Relief project.

Hot Country has grown a lot in the past five years, and it will continue to do so thanks to its dedicated fan base. If you’ve yet to listen, it’s time to dust off your boots and hit play on Hot Country.

Ken Burns ‘COUNTRY MUSIC’ Enhanced Playlist Experience Comes to Spotify

The influence of country music on America cannot be understated. Understanding the impact of the historic genre is the driving force of renowned filmmaker Ken Burns’s much-anticipated new documentary film, COUNTRY MUSIC. To welcome the film, Spotify and Burns have created the Ken Burns Country Music Enhanced Playlist Experience, available now on Spotify.

The epic documentary, which plows through decades of country music in an eight part, 16-hour film, was directed by Ken Burns and produced by long-time collaborators Dayton Duncan and Julie Dunfey. The documentary will broadcast live on PBS and be available for streaming on PBS.org starting September 15. Until then, country music fans can head to Spotify for a musical introduction to the documentary.

First, check out the Ken Burns Country Music Enhanced Playlist Experience, which includes 48 songs from the official Country Music – A Film By Ken Burns (The Soundtrack). The experience also includes outtakes from the film’s interviews with artists such as Jack White, Dolly Parton, and Dwight Yoakam, sharing their favorite country song of all time, with each clip providing a new understanding and appreciation for the simple purity of each hit’s lyrics.

Additionally, at the start of the experience, enjoy interview footage with Ken Burns himself answering questions about country music history from today’s emerging artists. And as you make your way chronologically through the audio tracks, enjoy a journey through country music history, with videos from Burns providing context for each new time period you come across.

“Our Country Music film took eight years to make,” says Burns. “It’s an intimate look at the power of music and songwriting and tries to weave together personal stories with a larger American story that touches on race, class, geography, and women’s issues. But it never loses sight of the music. Spotify has helped us rethink how to share this music. The new playlists are the perfect complement to the film and allow for a truly immersive experience. We’re very excited to release them timed to the film’s broadcast.”

In addition to the Country Music Enhanced Playlist Experience, starting on September 10 listeners can head to the Country Music Hub to experience even more of country music’s impact.

Whether your favorite is from the past year or a past decade, tune into the Ken Burns Country Music Enhanced Playlist Experience playlist for a celebration of the historic genre.

Country music has long been a significant part of this country’s cultural fabric, and what better way to commemorate our nation’s birthday than with one of music’s superstars performing at one of the most iconic US holiday destinations! On July 4th, Spotify will bring the Heartland to NYC’S famed Seaport District, to celebrate the launch of Hot Country Live, the new live concert series that will serve as an extension of the popular flagship Hot Country playlist, which features more than 4.5 million followers worldwide. Multi-platinum selling and seven-time Grammy Award winning global music superstar Carrie Underwood will headline the inaugural Hot Country Live concert at the Seaport’s The Rooftop at Pier 17 concert venue, performing her biggest hits, including her current single “Cry Pretty,” from her first studio album on Capitol Records Nashville, which will be released on September 14. Chart-topping country music duo Dan + Shay, whose self-titled third studio album will be released on June 22, will open the concert event. Additional artists will be announced at a later date.

The Hot Country Live concert series will bring today’s most dynamic country music stars, many of whom are featured in the Hot Country playlist each week, to select cities nationwide. Spotify creates truly memorable experiences for artists and fans, and with the launch of Hot Country Live, will bring country music fans even closer to their favorite artists.

I’m thrilled to be a part of Spotify’s first ever Hot Country Live show, and can’t wait to celebrate the holiday playing live music under the stars.

– Carrie Underwood

According to Brittany Schaffer, Head of Artist and Label Marketing at Spotify’s Nashville office, “This year Spotify is making a concentrated effort to shine a spotlight on country music and to create a gathering place for country artists and fans to share and experience the people, stories, and spirit that define their community. This starts on platform in the Hot Country playlist and is brought to life through our unique live events, like Hot Country Live. I can’t imagine a better way to kick-off our premiere country music concert series then by bringing country fans the opportunity to honor America on the Fourth of July with Carrie Underwood and Dan + Shay!”

This show is brought to you in partnership with the Howard Hughes Corporation, which is revitalizing the Seaport District and transforming Pier 17 into an iconic entertainment destination that will be home to the Pier 17 Rooftop Concert Series that will launch August 1.

Spotify has been expanding their footprint in the country music world in 2018, most recently with the re-launch of their Hot Country Playlist, as an enhanced playlist featuring exclusive and original video content. Enhanced playlists, like the previously launched RapCaviar and ¡Viva Latino!, combine music and video into a single view. This allows users to listen to their favorite audio tracks as well as watch interviews and music videos featuring their favorite artists. Enhanced playlists bring storytelling back to music discovery—a theme that country music emphasizes as well. As part of Hot Country, Spotify will continue to roll out dynamic new content, playlists, live events and more that will appeal to country music fans worldwide and Hot Country Live is the next exciting step in their country music journey.

Spotify and Lifestyle + Entertaining Expert Kimberly Schlegel Whitman Concoct the Perfect Party Recipe—Music Plus Punch

An unforgettable party playlist and a delicious punch have a few things in common: The recipes are loose, variations are welcome, and it only takes one or two elements to make a hit.

In honor of this perfect pairing, Spotify partnered with lifestyle and entertaining expert Kimberly Schlegel Whitman for a tastemaker lunch in Dallas, Texas. There, guests celebrated Whitman’s new book, “Parties Around a Punch Bowl,” as well as the debut of Kim’s verified Spotify profile and custom “Hot Country” punchbowl recipe (shared below), named afterSpotify’s country music flagship playlist.

Guests including Amber Venz Box, founder of rewardStyle; Courtney Kerr of KERRently; Christina Lynch, founder of Mi Golandrina; Lisa More, founder of Cover Swim, and Rae Liu, co-founder of Leatherology, gathered at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek for a peppy, punch-filled luncheon and performance by country artist Tenille Townes.

Whether it’s mixed together, tasted, adjusted, or added to, “punch is an evolving concoction that continues to change until the party is over,” Kim declares in her book. According to the eight-time author and TV host, the punch bowl, that sparkling retro party staple, is back.

So have fun experimenting with the punch, because we have the music portion covered.
