Spotify Classics: The 100 Greatest R&B Songs of the Streaming Era

In February, we launched Spotify CLASSICS, our first-ever program to celebrate catalog music. Our inaugural list focused on the Classic Hip-Hop and R&B Albums of the Streaming Era and featured timeless bodies of work like Beyoncé’s Lemonade, Frank Ocean’s Blonde, SZA’s Ctrl, Rihanna’s ANTI, and Jazmine Sullivan’s Heaux Tales, to name a few. 

Today we’re unveiling the second chapter of our CLASSICS program: The 100 Greatest R&B Songs of the Streaming Era. Spotify defines the Streaming Era as a timeframe that spans 2015 until present day.

R&B went through an identity crisis during the first half of the 2010s, but the genre found its footing during the streaming era. R&B morphed into a style of music that absorbed hip-hop, pop, Afrobeats, electronic, alternative, and indie into its sound, breathing new life into the genre.

Spotify’s U.S. editorial team—along with Carl Chery, Creative Director, Head of Urban Music at Spotify—has taken on the ambitious task of corralling all shades of R&B under one umbrella, and in the end, this list offers a snapshot of all the genre has offered in the streaming era. Based on criteria such as quality, impact, replay value, influence, and cultural significance, Spotify CLASSICS is 100% qualitative. The program is driven by our editors’ music and cultural expertise—and not by data—meaning that massive streaming numbers were not a requirement for the 100 songs you see below.

50. Jazmine Sullivan – “Lost One”

Jazmine Sullivan’s “Lost One” arrived in 2020, five years after the release of her previous album, Reality Show. As the lead single for 2021’s critically acclaimed Heaux Tales, it signaled a new beginning in more than one way. Eschewing more traditional pop songwriting structures, “Lost One” showed off an evolution in Jazmine’s sound, as she takes a sparse and muddy guitar loop and brings it to life with multipart harmonies that jump from the speakers in all three dimensions. Over the course of three and a half minutes, she chronicles the process of moving on from a relationship, laying bare the good, bad, and ugly that comes with it.

49. Steve Lacy – “Dark Red”

As a core member of The Internet, Steve Lacy helped the group mine the proggy, experimental corners of ’70s soul and reimagine them in a contemporary light. With “Dark Red,” the standout track from his debut solo EP Steve Lacy’s Demo, the multitalented artist flashes his ability to combine the lived-in feel of The Internet’s best work with infectious hooks and melodies that would be right at home on any pop star’s album.

Fun Fact: Steve created “Dark Red” on his iPhone. The song went viral and had its biggest moment in 2021, four years after its release.

48. Ari Lennox – “Shea Butter Baby”

After generating buzz with her debut EP, PHO, in 2016, vocalist Ari Lennox had a breakthrough moment with her 2019 single “Shea Butter Baby.” A seductive late-night call to action, the tune pulls from trap, dancehall, and dembow influences, creating a hypnotic mélange as Ari lustfully shoots her shot into the darkness. By song’s end, her plea is heard as J. Cole hops on the track to respond in kind, giving it an electric atmosphere that helped make it a modern classic.

47. SiR – “John Redcorn”

By the time “John Redcorn” dropped in 2019, SiR had already carved out his spot on a stacked TDE roster that included the likes of Kendrick Lamar, SZA, and Schoolboy Q. While he already had a string of hits to his name, the vocalist took an unexpected turn with “John Redcorn,” drawing inspiration from a certain TV character of the same name. Spacious and full of lush instrumentation, SiR invites listeners to get lost in the track and drift aimlessly as he guides you through one of his patented tales of unrequited love.

46. Coco Jones – “ICU”

Debuting as an actress on shows like Bel-Air, Coco Jones made it known she was a multifaceted star with the release of 2022’s What I Didn’t Tell You. On the hit single “ICU,” a ballad inspired by generations of Southern soul, Coco’s vocal abilities are put on full display as she pours her heart out about a fading love she can’t shake. Equally personal and relatable, “ICU” helped Coco establish herself among R&B’s next generation.

There’s no mistaking Tems’s voice on a track. And it’s songs like “Higher that have made the Nigerian talent’s unique vocals instantly recognizable across the globe. “Higher” showcases the power and delicate texture of Tems’s voice as she effortlessly jumps between singing and rapping. But more than just a display of technical excellence, Tems’s talent as a songwriter is also on full display, which elevates the song from a hot track into an experience.

44. Summer Walker ft. SZA – “No Love”

Like many R&B greats, Summer Walker has the rare ability to draw you into a song with her voice alone. On “No Love,” her languid, blues-inflected 2021 single featuring SZA, both artists reach into their bag of vocal tricks as they swear off romance in favor of uncomplicated fun. As the beat drops in and out, the duo use their voices like instruments, switching up their tones and cadences so that the track never once reaches a lull.

43. Miguel ft. Travis Scott – “Sky Walker”

Over the course of his career, Miguel has never been one to play things safe—or settle into a single lane when it comes to his sound. On “Sky Walker,” the lead single from his 2017 album War & Leisure, the LA native absorbed the trap influences surrounding pop music at the time and turned them into one of his biggest hits to date. Bringing Travis Scott along for the ride, the pair float over feathery synths as they celebrate their wins and shrug off the critics.

42. Daniel Caesar – “Japanese Denim”

Initially overlooked, Japanese Denim languished in the long shadow of Daniel Caesar’s breakout hit “Get You” when it was first released in 2016. But once fans started to dig deeper into the Canadian’s catalog a few years later, they discovered a Southern-fried gem of a tune. As Daniel croons over bluesy, reverb-soaked guitars that would have been at home on any Stax Records single from the ’60s, “Japanese Denim” is reminiscent of D’Angelo and Otis Redding at their best and carries on the tradition of classic soul ballads.

41. Lucky Daye – “Over”

Having found early success with singles like “Roll Some Mo” and “How Much Can A Heart Take,” Lucky Daye established himself as one of R&B’s marquee names with his 2021 single “Over.” Inspired by sounds of the early 2000s, “Over” updates the sounds of that era and chronicles the maddening confusion of a hot-and-cold romance as Lucky’s sleek, emotive vocals perfectly capture the emotional toll it inflicts.

40. Anderson .Paak – “Am I Wrong”

A favorite among critics since his breakthrough release Malibu, Anderson .Paak hit a high watermark with that album’s standout track, “Am I Wrong.” Concocting a silky blend of disco, funk, electro, and hip-hop, Anderson’s trademark raspy vocals bounce, rock, skate, and roll on the track as Schoolboy Q adds the perfect level of spice to one of the streaming era’s more unexpected club bangers.

39. Brent Faiyaz – “Trust”

Even when he debuted as part of the shadowy trio Sonder, Brent Faiyaz’s ascent to stardom always felt inevitable. With his 2018 hit “Trust,” the singer showed why he had been on tastemaker radars in the years leading up. Similar to R&B forebears like The-Dream, Brent’s feathery tenor becomes one more instrument on the sparse, upbeat track. Playing off the drum’s bouncy rhythm, he gives every lyric room to play in space, infusing the track with a haunted moodiness that captures listeners’ attention from the very first listen.

38. PARTYNEXTDOOR ft. Drake – “Come and See Me”

Good things usually happen when PARTYNEXTDOOR and Drake team up on the same song, and the slow-burning “Come And See Me” is no exception.Over little more than a stuttering hi-hat and a snare that sounds like a grandfather clock in the dead of night, the pair unload their 4 a.m. confessionals over the 40-produced track, marinating on the moments when the give-and-take of a relationship starts to test those involved.

37. Muni Long – “Hrs & Hrs”

Having made her name as a songwriter for the likes of Ariana Grande and Rihanna, Muni Long took a star turn herself with “Hrs & Hrs,” reviving the kind of late-’90s soul that only comes on after dark. Evoking the best of Aaliyah, Erykah Badu, and Alicia Keys, the jazzy, smoldering tune topped charts, went viral on social media, and earned a guest feature from Usher on the remix. It ultimately landed Muni a Grammy for Best R&B Performance.

Fun Fact: Long posted a video in December 2021 that led to the “Hrs and Hrs Challenge.” The challenge was popular among the LGBT community, who thought the song meant “Hers and Hers.” She also wrote the song while washing the dishes.

36. Giveon – “Heartbreak Anniversary”

Epic, 2020

In a genre dominated by unique voices, few are more distinct than Giveon’s. After generating buzz with his debut single, “Like I Want You,” and his collab with Drake, “Chicago Freestyle,” Giveon shot into stardom with “Heartbreak Anniversary.” A classic, piano-driven ballad puts the Frank Sinatra-obsessed crooner’s voice front and center, and the distorted guitar licks sprinkled throughout the chorus help imbue the song with a catchiness that slowly creeps up on you.

Fun Fact: The song didn’t become a hit until a year later due to a viral trend that began in Southeast Asia; the song went number one in Malaysia and Singapore, respectively.

35. H.E.R. – “Focus” 

RCA, 2016

In a musical landscape where most artists try to seize the spotlight any way they can, H.E.R. has always been content to sit back and let her tunes do the talking. Despite its hushed, dreamlike air, “Focus” screamed volumes when it debuted in 2016. Accompanied by rolling piano keys and lullaby-esque melodies, an exasperated H.E.R. gently begs for the attention of another. While we never find out if her pleas were successful, we do know that the song garnered worldwide attention, an opening salvo that propelled H.E.R. into R&B’s upper echelon.

34. Beyoncé – “VIRGO’S GROOVE”

Exuding a smooth and futuristic funkiness, “VIRGO’S GROOVE” sounds like it comes straight from an episode of Soul Train filmed inside the International Space Station. Featuring a Who’s Who of pop and R&B talent—including Brittany “Chi” Coney, Levan Kali, and The-Dream—the song’s aerodynamic synths collide with double-wide bass licks for a modern disco classic. Beyoncé invites listeners to buckle up and blast off for a rollicking ride through the stars.

Fun Fact: According to Levan, the process for “VIRGO’S GROOVE” took “two to three years” with an “incredibly collaborative process” to integrate the song into the larger project.

With Leon Thomas and the legendary Babyface signed on as coproducers and cowriters, the pair bring a polish to the track that never compromises SZA’s most unique attribute: her voice.

Despite the fact that she’s usually surrounded by exquisite production work, SZA’s vocals rarely fail to steal the show of any track she blesses. And on “Snooze,” as she coos about the importance of not sleeping on the love of her life (figuratively speaking), music and lyrics intertwine harmoniously. Even while delivering one of her more restrained performances in recent memory, SZA’s voice stands apart. 

In the context of R&B’s elite, it’s this precise quality that—creatively—puts SZA head and shoulders above the pack, and a huge reason why “Snooze” sits alone as the greatest R&B song of the streaming era.

Musically, 2023 was defined by the return of major female pop stars, sonic diversity that topped the charts, and a global music atmosphere that gave rise to powerful genres. On the podcast front, creators are responding to trends in real time, and audiences are turning to podcasts to join larger cultural conversations. As always, our 2023 Spotify Wrapped campaign reflects these trends, and our toplists showcase how over 574 million people around the world listened this year.

The top global artists of 2023

Reimagined rereleases, record-breaking world tours, and colorful friendship bracelets—fans everywhere will be thrilled to see Taylor Swift as this year’s top artist, with more than 26.1 billion global streams since January 1. In the 48 hours leading up to this crowning moment, Spotify revealed 21 puzzle pieces with Taylor Swift-themed easter eggs in billboards from Sao Paulo to Jakarta. These clues culminated in a spotlight video that included nods to her universe—featuring everything from cats to her infamous red lips. For a limited time, when you play one of her songs on Spotify, watch as the progress bar changes and sparkles to match the song’s era color. 

Taking second place was reggaeton superstar Bad Bunny, who also had a standout year with a new album, nadie sabe lo que va a pasar mañana. Rounding up the top five were The Weeknd, Drake, and Peso Pluma.

The top global songs of 2023

The top song of the year, Miley Cyrus’s record-breaking Flowers,” had incredible momentum from the day of its debut through the summer months and now counts more than 1.6 billion streams globally. In the second and third spots are Kill Bill” by SZA andAs It Was” by Harry Styles. The fourth and fifth spots come from Jung Kook with Seven (feat. Latto),” and Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma with Ella Baila Sola.”

The top global albums of 2023 

Listeners looked to the past in choosing which albums to play, as several of this year’s top-five albums were released prior to 2023. The most-streamed album of the year for the second year in a row was Un Verano Sin Ti by Bad Bunny, with more than 4.5 billion streams globally, followed by Taylor Swift’s album Midnights. SZA takes the third spot with SOS. And in the fourth and fifth spots are Starboy by The Weeknd and MAÑANA SERÁ BONITO by KAROL G

The top global podcasts of 2023

Spotify is the most-used audio podcast platform in many key markets around the world and is also the number-one podcast publisher in the U.S., according to the most recent Edison Research data. And for the fourth time in a row, The Joe Rogan Experience takes the honor of top podcast of the year globally. In second place for the second year is Call Her Daddy, and in third, Huberman Lab, followed by anything goes with emma chamberlain and On Purpose with Jay Shetty. Eight of the top 25 podcasts on the global top lists are Spotify Owned & Licensed podcasts, and nine of the top 25 podcasts in the U.S. are as well. 

Throughout the year, these podcasts, as well as many others, spotlighted top moments in pop culture, from music to movies to technology. 

  • The spring and summer were full of girl- and women-powered media. The combinations of Beyonce’s Renaissance Tour, Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour, and the success of the Barbie movie led to cultural conversations across many genres of podcasts about both economics and entertainment. 
  • Throughout the year, the world was fascinated, frustrated, and sometimes frightened by the rise in AI. Podcasts offered a critical and nuanced take on the rising tech trend.

The global trends that shaped our year

These most-streamed artists, songs, albums, and podcasts weren’t the only guideposts to 2023. Pop culture trends also fueled listening, from themed playlists to song spikes. 

  • This year, Eurovision made a huge impact, as “Tattoo” by winner Loreen and “Cha Cha Cha” by runner-up Käärijä both reached the top 10 global daily chart the day after the final. 
  • Gen Z continues to embrace the genreless/genre-hybrid trend, refusing to be defined by only one genre, and instead moving seamlessly between sounds. They also embrace moods, looking for playlists and songs that best describe the mood or moment they’re in.
  • This year also marked a significant surge in Colombian enthusiasm for Mexican music. Colombia emerged as the fifth-largest consumer of Mexican music in 2023, showcasing an 85% increase in its consumption over the year. 
  • The consumption of Indian classical instrumental music continues to grow on Spotify in India and around the world. In the last 24 months, India’s classical music consumption grew by close to 500% on Spotify. Over 45% of Indian classical music listeners on Spotify are under the age of 25. 
  • Afrobeats is one of the fastest-growing genres on Spotify, growing by 550% since 2017 with new audiences emerging in Mexico and India. In 2023, Rema’s “Calm Down” became the first Afrobeats artist-led track to hit a billion streams on Spotify. 
  • Mandopop, with top artists like Jay Chou, JJ Lin, and Eason Chan, has received more than 500 million monthly streams globally, seeing an almost 45% increase in the past year.

For the Record wanted to know more about the artists, songs, and playlists Sebastien loves the most, so we sat down with him to find out.

Who are some of your favorite Afrobeats and reggaeton artists?

In terms of Afrobeats, there’s a lot of Wizkid on my playlist for sure. “Fever” is one of my favorite songs and it had to be on there. Same with his song “Ghetto Love.”

Burna Boy is also on there, as well as Rema and Ayra Starr, who are on the come-up. I really like them. And when it comes to reggaeton, I’ve been listening to a lot of Bad Gyal, Young Miko, Sech, Karol G, and Emilia

How about top Spotify playlists for those genres?

Usually I listen to my own playlists, but if I want to find some new songs, there’s one called Afro Hits that I’m into. There’s also one called Baila Reggaeton where I always discover new songs that I like.

Do you have a go-to Spotify feature for discovering music?

When you’re making playlists, there’s a feature at the bottom that suggests more songs with a similar vibe to add. It’s kind of like Smart Shuffle, but for making playlists.

It will recommend songs that I forgot about, and it’s great to just have it pop up there as a reminder.

Do you have any favorite Premium features?

I was using DJ last night and the songs X was choosing took me back to being in the car with my mom when I was a kid. It played this old Drake song that I forgot about called “Signs” and I was like, that’s crazy. 

I like that X will jump in and be like, “Here’s what’s coming up next,” and then explain why DJ picked those songs. I also like how it switches up the vibe every so often. I can keep listening for hours.

I was also using daylist recently and it created this playlist for me that was called something like “Island Time Vacation.” I actually discovered another Wizkid song called “Anoti” that ended up on my playlist.

When you’re driving through Miami, what are three songs that perfectly set the vibe? 

When I’m in my car, I always see people on their boats, and I like to imagine I’m on a boat too. So in those moments, I’ll obviously put on Wizkid’s “Fever.” But I’ll also queue up Sech’s “911” and Cris MJ’s Una Noche en Medellín.” That last song is about the Colombian city, but it still has a big Miami vibe.

Inspired by the end-of-season awards that honor basketball’s top hoopers, our All-RapCaviar First, Second, and Third Teams consist of the 15 rappers who’ve had the biggest impact on the flagship playlist (and other hip-hop-centric Spotify playlists) over the past 12 months. 

Last week we announced the All-RapCaviar teams, then gave fans the chance to vote for the RapCaviar MVP and Rookie of the Year. 

The All-RapCaviar campaign has always brought the worlds of hip-hop and basketball together. But this year we took things a step further and teamed up with basketball superstar Kevin Durant—an expert in winning MVP and Rookie of the Year awards—and his media company Boardroom to help heat things up with the process.

KD stopped by the RapCaviar set last week to help reveal our team selections, then got the conversation started about who the MVP favorite might be. And after a week of intense debate and voting by fans on social media, we finally know who will take home All-RapCaviar’s top honors. 

All-RapCaviar First Team and MVP

In a battle that featured the likes of Metro Boomin, Drake, 21 Savage, Lil Uzi Vert, and Lil Baby, the voting race for RapCaviar MVP came down to the wire between our All-RapCaviar First Team selections, with Drake just edging out Metro Boomin as the fans’ pick. After releasing solo hits like “Search & Rescue,” collaborating with 21 Savage on “Rich Flex,” and making a cameo appearance on J Hus’s “Who Told You,” Drake’s victory was well-earned. 

RapCaviar Rookie of the Year

As Rookie of the Year voting concluded, Destroy Lonely broke away from the pack and claimed a victory over fellow nominees Central Cee, GloRilla, Ice Spice, and Luh Tyler. The Atlanta rapper, known for tracks like “NOSTYLIST” and “Bane,” turned heads with his 2023 album, If Looks Could Kill. Destroy Lonely’s dynamic and eclectic approach to music has resonated with fans, and it’s easy to see why they reached a consensus on a talent we tipped earlier this year as an artist to watch.

All-RapCaviar Second Team

The All-RapCaviar Second Team is made up of Ice Spice, Tyler, The Creator, Lil Durk, Coi Leray, and YoungBoy Never Broke Again, who all made their mark with iconic hits over the past year.

The Stars of ‘Joy Ride’ Reveal Their Top Songs for a Road Trip Adventure

Arriving in theaters this week, Joy Ride is the tale of four unlikely friends who embark on a hilarious and unapologetically explicit adventure through Asia. 

When the high-achieving Audrey (Ashley Park) travels to China for a business trip with her irreverent best friend, Lolo (Sherry Cola), they are joined by Audrey’s college pal turned Chinese soap star, Kat (Stephanie Hsu), and Lolo’s K-Pop-loving cousin, Deadeye (Sabrina Wu). From there things go sideways, but over the course of the film, the no-holds-barred mayhem turns into a journey of bonding, friendship, and debauchery. 

Offering a glimpse into the Asian American experience—particularly for young women—Joy Ride reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.

Music also plays a prominent role in the film. K-Pop’s massive cultural impact is felt throughout it, but especially when the quartet creates their own K-Pop group, Brownie Tuesday, complete with a cover of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP.”

To celebrate the release of the film, the four stars put their heads together to create the Joy Ride Official Playlist, collecting their personal favorite songs that capture the collective spirit of the characters they portrayed.

With new and classic hits from BTS, BLACKPINK, Spice Girls, Drake, Lizzo, Vanessa Carlton, Kelly Clarkson, Victoria Monet, and New Edition, as well as official soundtrack cuts from The Linda Lindas, Queen WA$ABII, and VaVa, it’s a collection that evokes both nostalgia and a desire to sing along.

For the Record caught up with the foursome to talk about their picks, what it was like to perform “WAP,” and the influence of K-Pop culture on the movie. 

What inspired the mood for the Joy Ride Official Playlist? Were there any songs that you were especially excited to include?

Stephanie: I think that if we were on a road trip, we’d just want that nostalgia. There are certain albums and songs that spoke to you at an exact time and place of your life. I threw in one that’s very tweeny, which is not my typical forte of music, but it’s Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles.”

Ashley: The four of us would be in a car looking out the window as if we were Vanessa Carlton herself . . . and then nobody would be driving. 

Sherry: Say You’ll Be There” by the Spice Girls is a big one for me. It’s about friendship, you know, and having each other’s backs and having a good time while we’re doing it.

Stephanie: Sabrina, do you know the Spice Girls? 

Sabrina: Yeah I know the Spice Girls. To be clear, you’re gonna be surprised that some of those songs that I threw on the playlist are pretty old. I was thinking about the big breakup at the end and so I threw in “After the Love Has Gone” by Earth, Wind & Fire

Ashley: I added some BLACKPINK because we want that K-Pop type of beat behind us, but also included Kelly Clarkson because I think we all love to emote as well. We’re dramatic.

Stephanie: I also feel like a song I threw in that really represents our movie and our dynamics is the Saweetie song “Best Friend (feat. Doja Cat).”

Ashley: Yeah! They used that for the moment when we first walk in the airport as Brownie Tuesday so that we could feel like the best versions of ourselves. I always associate that with the movie.

Sabrina: I also felt like there needed to be a hot song that references travel. So I had “Coastin’” by Victoria Monet. And I’m gonna butcher the lines, but there’s a moment that’s like, “Feel like a Thursday how I’m throwin’ it back. Baby we can go North, South, East, West Coast.” And I thought that was pretty hot.

You cover Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion for the big Brownie Tuesday airport scene. How did that go down?

Ashley: I think that’s special in the film because it was the first time us four got together and really collaborated creatively. We worked on that during the very first table read, and we discovered that Sabrina is an amazing beatboxer.

And we’re really happy that Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B gave their blessing to have the song in the film. That was the best form of allyship we could ask for. We’ve all blared the song to ourselves, and I was like, “Oh my gosh, this really pushes buttons and breaks barriers that shouldn’t have even been there.” I don’t even think I realized until we were recording it, but the way that the lyrics were rewritten by our writers was so specific to us and they still worked so well. I felt very liberated listening to it.

Sabrina: Cardi and Meg really did a lot for women’s sexuality and we are lucky to live in a world with them. We are not deserving of that song and their power. 

Sherry: Truly, truly, truly. Yeah. I can’t wait for Cardi B and Meg to watch the film.

That scene also includes a fully choreographed K-Pop routine. What was the whole experience like? 

Stephanie: Well I’ll just say that making a movie is like co-birthing a baby and also the most profound form of trauma bonding. We would film Monday through Friday and rehearse on Saturdays. And we were rewriting lyrics as we were going so it was kind of a frenzy and chaos—we really wanted to get it right. But it was really fun. We really wanted to honor the original songs and honor Deadeye’s vision of friendship and badassness.

Sherry: Yeah. We really went all out. And shout out to Joe Tuliao, our incredible choreographer, and also the backup dancers. I mean, that was the squad.

Were there any K-Pop songs or artists you listened to during the shoot to prepare for the Brownie Tuesday scene?

Sabrina: I think we listened to a lot of BLACKPINK, if I remember.

Stephanie: Yeah. We watched the BLACKPINK documentary together. 

Ashley: I wish the BLACKPINK song “Pink Venom” was out when we did the film, because I feel like the vibe of it is absolutely exactly what we needed for the scene.

Sherry: The whole scene was definitely an homage to BLACKPINK and just the fact that K-Pop is this global sensation that’s taking over.

Sabrina, did you discover any particular pockets of K-Pop fandom to help inform Deadeye?

Sabrina: Yeah, I definitely took a look at things like fancams when we were filming, because K-Pop was definitely in the cultural spotlight at the time—it was all over the internet. People were talking about K-Pop fans a lot because they disrupted a political rally in Oklahoma by buying all of the tickets. 

I was very aware of just how powerful of a global community it was, so that informed my character. And when I was growing up, I lived very much on the internet. I was obsessed with Asian YouTube and Asian hip-hop. And so I sort of brought that personal experience of being deeply involved in and drawn to Asian culture. So that’s sort of how Deadeye was born.

Ashley: Also what I love about the movie is we get to see the K-Pop community and really understand why Deadeye and the K-Pop army really love and cherishes this music and these groups. I’m so happy in the way that we present them as heroes and show how they show up for people they’ve never met in real life.

Tinder and Spotify Couple Up for Match-Worthy Anthems and Spotify Premium Trial Offer

Love for an artist or song can bring people together—whether as friends or something more. How Spotify Brings FC Barcelona Players and Passionate Fans Together

For fans, the world of sports is more than what happens on the field or the outcome on the scoreboard. It’s about bringing people together. In this way, sports and music are similar—especially when it comes to the passion that fans have for each.

This week at Spotify Beach at the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, Spotify’s Head of Music, Jeremy Erlich, hosted a conversation between former FC Barcelona player Cesc Fàbregas, freestyle footballer Pola Gomez, Coca Cola’s VP of Global Sports and Entertainment Marketing and Partnerships, Bradford Ross, and Samsung’s European CMO, Benjamin Braun. Together, they dove into the fan culture surrounding sports, music and the ways each brand has harnessed this passion. 

“About a year ago, we signed our partnership with FC Barcelona,” Jeremy said at the start of the conversation. “It’s been an amazing partnership. Together, we set out to bring the world of  Football and Music together. For us, it’s about how we can use FC Barcelona’s huge scale and fanbase to celebrate artists and grow our brand in places like India, Indonesia and Latin America. Football and sport are different from music, but they have the similarities of having very passionate fan bases and having very young fanbases.”

Cesc Fàbregas knows something about an active fanbase. He joined his first professional team, Arsenal, at age 16, coming off the World Cup tournament where he was voted the best player and goal scorer. “Even though we lost the final against Brazil, that’s the first time I started signing shirts and taking pictures with people.” A few years later, Cesc joined his home country’s Football Club Barcelona, and led the team to victory at the world championships at age 23. But he stays humble.

“I always say that in football, you never know everything,” said Cesc. “It’s one of those sports you can always grow, even when you’re 32, 35, 37, and everyone around me has helped me learn. Everyday, I’m thankful for that.” 

Pola Gomez also started playing football at a young age, thanks to her family’s love of the sport. But after sustaining injuries to both knees, she transitioned to football freestyle, where she interacts with most of her fans through social media. “I am on social media first for sharing my passion, sharing my tricks, but also to show off this incredible football freestyle universe. I love being close to my community, to share tips, but also to motivate people, especially girls trying out the sport of their dreams,” she said. 

Jeremy dove deeper into music and branding with each athlete, and how their sport brings fans together. Read on for some top moments from their conversation.

Cesc: It [The Spotify partnership with FC Barcelona] is another level. You see how big the club can be around the world. Everywhere you go, they know you. They know the players, they know the brand. Spotify has made a great choice in joining us.

Jeremy: As part of our Barcelona partnership, twice this past year for the Clásico, which is one of the most watched sports in the world, we replaced the Spotify jersey with an artist logo. We did Drake for the first Clásico, and then we did ROSALiA for the second. And let’s specifically talk about ROSALiA: She’s been a Barcelona fan her entire life. So the emotional connection when we offered her the opportunity to be on the jersey was, I think, one of the most enriching things we’ve done with an artist. She was moved to tears because her family and all her friends could see her on the jersey. But I think that really brings the strength of local connections.

Cesc: I think music has a really big, big part for us in football. Normally, there’s one designated player that will take charge of the music and will play music that everyone likes. But Spain is the place where there’s the most chaos because everyone likes a different type of music. 

So each game, we pick a player who will dictate what’s going to happen musically in the locker room. It’s really, really important because in this half an hour before the game when we listen to music, we also just pump everyone up and we get motivated and excited for the game. 

Sometimes we have one song that we all pick that we all feel identified with and we’ll just go for it. And you know it’s time for action. 

Jeremy: When you think of what you want brands to associate with you, what do you think of? What’s most important to you? 

Pola: Most important for me is to keep my image as a strong woman with my style. I really try to accept only brands with my values and ethics. At first, I posted just for me, and now all people can see my free style and they love and appreciate it. It’s just crazy—I don’t really have words for that, but it’s just so cool to be able to simply enjoy my passion. I can’t imagine my life without my ball. We are like a duo. We express ourselves together.

Cesc: I think it’s most important to bring everyone together and fight for what’s good and fight against what’s not good. Because we always have a big thing to say as sportsmen, as people who represent many, many things around the world in terms of culture and diversity. We just have to always be positive and try to improve as the world is trying to improve.

‘CAN You Hear Me’ Returns as Toronto Music Producer Ikky Creates a Musical Melting Pot

In celebration of Canadian artistry, For the Record has launched CAN You Hear Me, a series championing the music, unique talent, and diverse cultures found in the Great White North—from the jazz bars in Québec to the dance clubs in Ontario all the way to the powwows in the west.

Next up in our series is the trendsetting producer gaining international acclaim Ikwinder Sahota, better known as Ikky. Through his 4N Records imprint (pronounced “foreign”) on Warner Music Canada and his 4N Nights concert series, the 22-year-old from the Rexdale neighborhood of Toronto has been effectively bridging the gap between the exploding music scenes in India and the rest of the world.

Growing up Indian in the cultural melting pot that is the Toronto music scene has helped Ikky seamlessly blend Punjabi Bhangra music with hip-hop, pop, and Caribbean sounds into a unique style that highlights the cultural exchange that defines his home city. He has worked with some of the biggest Punjabi artists in the world today, including Diljit Dosanjh and Shubh. The Four You EP released this year with Karan Aujla was an instant hit, taking in tens of millions of streams per track, with “52 Bars” taking the top spot for listens.

For the Record sat down with Ikky to talk about life growing up in Canada, his love of Drake, and what it means to carve out a space for South Asian talent.

Can you tell us a little bit about your journey into music?

My father used to write music and he had a dream of being in the music industry, but since it never happened to him, he shoved my brother and me into it. At the time, I didn’t really want to do it, but I developed a taste for the music and mixes you’d hear in dance music and started remixing when I was around 8 years old. My brother then joined in and we’d do live shows, then we’d start learning some instruments, and by the time I was 12, I’d really started to grasp the extent and joy found in the world of production.

So, from then on, I started working on my craft. I learned lots, made songs either with my voice or someone else’s, began meeting some people within the industry, and by the time I was in grade 12, I had a hit record. 

Your music spans and intersects multiple genres and cultures, resulting in a vibe that’s almost a signature of Toronto music. Can you share a bit about where that sound came from for you?

Here in Toronto, the people I grew up with were Punjabi, Hindu, Muslim . . . there was this fusion of cultures. Even the music was a mix of the traditional stuff we all knew and what we listened to that was part of living in Toronto. So I would listen to Jay-Z growing up and show his music to my Black and white friends. Then they’d show me what they were listening to and everything just kind of blends together.

I feel like with my music, even though it combines a lot of different elements, you’re not consciously thinking that I tried to make an American song, an Indian song, or a Spanish song. It sounds like a natural exchange because that’s what growing up in Toronto was like. You only learn that by literally growing up here.    

What prompted your label, 4N Records?

As production became my calling, I was getting a lot of ghost work for hire, but it really felt like I was working on the client’s dream more than my own. It just became a job that I took so I could stay afloat and afford going to university. But then I met Mathew Fruitman and Eric Lawrence from Coalition Music, and in talking with them, I started thinking that maybe there was a bigger picture to this, and I could really evolve into doing things I want to do and create an entity where other artists and music could live on beyond me.

And it started off as a Punjabi kind of entity, but eventually I went for it and made it culturally diverse for everybody. Whether you’re from America listening to Indian sounds or in India listening to American ones, foreign music is what we make at 4N. And as a guy from Toronto where we get hit with every sort of culture, I made it a point to make it diverse and unique.

Along with the Canadian scene, you’ve been a big part of the growing worldwide success of Punjabi music. What was your experience in bringing the language to international ears?

I think over the last couple of years, people have really started to pay attention to Punjabi music, and I think I kind of helped close the gap on the producer end of things. We have a lot of artists breaking through, but as a producer I feel like it’s my job to direct them into the lane towards exposure. And honestly, I think I do a good job of that because of the team I have. My dream has become theirs too, and I truly feel like we’re at the forefront of something great.

The Punjabi music community isn’t as big as America’s, and there are barely any collaborations. So I’m trying to shine my light on them, bring them over here, and have our team all work together so that we’re on the same page. To make Punjabi relevant, we’ve got to do this on our own and open the gate. And when that gate’s open, it’s open forever. 

What’s one message you’d like listeners to take away from your music?

I think it’s just to work with a greater cause in mind. Every time I drop a project, I’m thinking of the generation after me as they hold this music until the end of their lives.

How have Spotify’s artist tools helped you? 

Spotify for Artists has been a fantastic tool in researching. It’s helped me understand my demographic better and it allows me to do the right kind of research that helps me plan things out. I know where to book shows based on where my listeners are and can take a look at the streams of my tracks and learn about what’s been working. 

Which fellow Canadian artists inspire you?

I’m kind of biased because I’m also from Toronto, but Drake. He’s able to tell a story, whether it’s through an interlude or a full album. Even when he’s not really singing on it, it’s undeniably his song. Listening to Drake has been my inspiration this whole time because he showed me that there’s more to making music than just whipping up some sounds. He’s really one of my biggest inspirations in terms of music and how he lives his life.

What songs are on your On Repeat playlist?

I listen to Drake all day, man. “Do Not Disturb,” “Keep the Family Close”. . . yeah, it’s those stories for me. 

I listen to a lot of The Weeknd, too, because, again, his pop is not everyone else’s pop. It’s honestly been crazy to see him grow as an artist the past few years.

Peso Pluma’s big break came in 2022 with his single “El Belicon,” which features Raul Vega and was supported on playlists like Corridos and Los Que Mandan. Nearly one year later, he cemented himself as Música Mexicana’s newest star with “Ella Baila Sola,” featuring Eslabon Armado. The single became Spotify’s all-time most-streamed Musica Mexicana track in one day globally and the most-streamed Latin song in the U.S in one single day in April 2023.

With Peso at the forefront of the genre, Música Mexicana has exploded in popularity over the past five years. Contributing to Latin music’s dominance on the chart, the genre has grown over 431% in streams on Spotify globally. Check out these additional stats: 

  • Peso Pluma is currently #4 on Spotify’s Top Artists globally.
  • Ella Baila Sola” is currently #1 on Spotify’s Top 50 US and Top 50 Global charts.
  • Peso Pluma has over 48 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and he’s the 48th-most-popular artist on-platform.
  • Today, 10 out of the top 20 songs on Spotify’s Daily Top Songs Global chart are Latin, five of which are by Mexican artists. This is a testament to the increasing popularity of Música Mexicana.

And Peso Pluma isn’t slowing down anytime soon. With his third studio album slated for release this summer, he’s also gearing up for a U.S. tour that kicks off in June. Amid all the excitement, For the Record sat down with Peso to talk about his biggest inspirations, the future of Latin music, and how it feels to be a RADAR US artist.

How did your journey into music begin?

I’ve always enjoyed music, but I actually was more into sports. I started playing around with music because I had friends that enjoyed it. I didn’t think I was that good at first, but I kept practicing and I did it with passion. After a while, I started writing with my cousin Tito. It was definitely a rough journey, but I stayed true to myself!

What’s your creative process like?

I try to not over think it—I listen to a song and just vibe with it. I imagine how all of the instruments will sound around my vocals, and how I can add my personal stamp to it. If I can’t do that, then the song probably isn’t for me. I like to get involved in production, but my producers and musicians are definitely an important part of the whole process.

What would you like your fans to get out of your music?

I want my fans to smile, laugh, cry, and dance. I want my music to make them feel something, and I want them to enjoy it as much as I do.

Which artists have inspired you the most?

Drake, Bad Bunny, Travis Scott, Natanael Cano. I look up to so many different artists. I love music and I draw inspiration from a lot of people.

What are you looking forward to as a RADAR US artist? 

I’m looking forward to exposing more of the world to Música Mexicana and to my culture. There’s a lot more to us than people might think. We have a lot to offer, and I’m sure we can make an impact out there.

What are you most looking forward to as Latin music, and particularly Música Mexicana, starts to become a beloved genre worldwide?

I’m looking forward to showing everyone that we can make global music, too. It’s a really special opportunity to show people that we can reach fans around the world.

Are there any Spotify for Artists tools you use regularly?

I always use my Spotify for Artists app to check on new releases through the real-time Listening Now feature that shows what people are listening to at the moment. It makes me feel connected to them in a way.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

I really care about the details. I always want to make sure I’m giving my best in every possible way. I’m also very specific about the vision for my projects. Overall, I’m just passionate about music and I want to transmit that to the world.

What are some of your rituals before you record a song?

I just go for it. Once we’ve got everything in place with my producers and musicians, everything flows from there. 

Any advice for fellow emerging artists?

Don’t give up on your dreams. It sounds cliché, but don’t stop! Be original and unique in your own way. Hard work pays off, and most importantly, so does being true to yourself.

He might only be 23, but McLaren Racing’s Lando Norris is already one of the world’s biggest motorsport stars. And it’s not just racing enthusiasts who are captivated by the charismatic driver—Lando is attracting new fans to the sport in droves.

Fans are showing their love for the driver through their Spotify playlists. Last fall, searches for Lando spiked more than 400%, and to date, fans around the world have made nearly 25,000 Lando-related playlists, with title themes like “driving with Lando” and “pov: you’re dating Lando Norris.”

From among all Lando Norris–related playlists, some of the top tracks added include “Yellow” and “Speed of Sound” by Coldplay, “Golden” by Harry Styles, “Smooth Operator” by Sade, “Ferrari” by James Hype and Miggy Dela Rosa, and, of course, “Let’s Go Lando!” by Pitstop Boys

Meanwhile, top tracks added to Lando Norris “dating playlists include London Boy” and “Paper Rings” by Taylor Swift, “Perfect” by One Direction, “Adore You” by Harry Styles, and “Kiss Me More” by Doja Cat (featuring SZA). 

As Lando prepares for the big race in Miami this weekend, he’s created an exclusive Spotify playlist, Sunshine & Tan Lines, that gives fans an inside look at how music helps him get into the right mindset.

Featuring hits from the likes of Bad Bunny, Drake, Burna Boy, Lizzy McAlpine, and even Alan Jackson, Lando’s playlist has a fun and laid-back vibe inspired by the Miami sunshine.

For the Record sat down with Lando to discuss the playlist, his favorite music to listen to before getting in the car, and how he likes to relax when he’s not on the track. 

How do the songs on your playlist help you get ready for a race?

Before a race, I just want to listen to songs with good energy that remind me of good times and make me happy. I like to make sure I’m in a good mood before I go into the garage. 

So there’s a bit of variety on this playlist. There are lo-fi tracks that let me relax and chill out, and upbeat ones that get me focused. But Miami is a hot and fun place, so there are also some fun, quirky, and cheerful tracks that I can have a cheesy sing-along to.  

Are there any songs on the playlist that might surprise people?

Most of them are probably songs that people know, but they may be surprised that I have some sad songs on the playlist. I don’t know why, but I love sad songs for some reason. Not because it connects me to anything. I think a lot of it is just enjoying the lyrics, the melody, and the vibe.

What’s your go-to song when you’re on a drive?

I love a bit of country, so Alan Jackson’s “Drive (For Daddy Gene)” is one of them. Not because it’s about driving necessarily, but it’s more that I like the tune. Miley Cyrus’s “Party In The USA” is another one that I like to throw on. It’s a song that always puts a smile on my face. 

When I’m driving somewhere alone, I love singing along to songs. And typically, slower-paced songs are easier for me to remember and keep up with. It’s a time to be free, so it has to be songs that I know the lyrics to.

How do you like to relax when you’re not focused on racing?

Mostly, it’s about doing ordinary things that let me be a bit more normal and less of a racing driver. My main thing is just hanging out with friends. It doesn’t really matter what we’re doing, but as long as I’m with them, it takes my mind away from racing. As much as it’s good to focus on racing, it’s easy to overthink things. So my time with friends is important.

But when I’m chilling at home, I like to play video games and binge TV shows. I also got back into cycling recently, so when I’m in Monaco, it’s nice to ride down to Cannes or Saint-Tropez and enjoy the coast and countryside.

Golfing with friends is another thing I love. It’s one of the sports I enjoy the most outside of racing. It helps take my mind off racing, but still has a competitive aspect to it where I want to strive to be better.

What’s your favorite song that you’ve discovered recently?

Probably “ceilings” by Lizzy McAlpine. My friend sent this to me yesterday and said I had to listen to it, probably because it’s a sad song. It’s a very different song than what most people would imagine I’d listen to, but we had some good laughs about that. I also watched a documentary about Lewis Capaldi recently, so I’ve also been listening to “Wish You The Best” a lot. 

Are there any Spotify playlists or features that you love?

I probably listen to my Liked Songs playlist the most, so I would say that’s my favorite. I also thank Spotify for enhancing some of my playlists—I like to find a couple of songs that I like, and then Enhance does the rest for me, saving a lot of time.

RADAR US Returns With the Soulful, Ever-Evolving Singer-Songwriter Q

It can often be difficult for a musician to develop a sound that is distinctly and uniquely their own, but Florida singer, songwriter, and producer Q Marsden, known mononymously as Q, has found his within the ever-changing variety of music itself. With his soulful voice, vulnerable lyrics, and production elements that span across genres, Q has made a name for himself as one of R&B’s strongest and most promising rising stars. 

And now the musical jack-of-all-trades is the latest artist in the RADAR US class of 2023.

Spotify’s RADAR program is committed to supporting artists on their paths to superstardom, helping rising talent at all stages of their development strengthen their connection to audiences while encouraging their ongoing artistic development.

Hailing from Pembroke Pines, Florida, the 23-year-old musician made his debut in 2018 but has been laying down tracks since he was a child. Q grew up in a musical family and credits Drake’s 2013 album Nothing Was The Same as the reason for his focus on the production process. Taking inspiration from rap, R&B, reggae, and funk, his latest EP, NOT ALONE, showcases his ever-evolving style and talent.

As part of his involvement in the RADAR program, Q will be launching a countdown page for the upcoming release of his album Soul,PRESENT with bespoke clips and debuting a stripped-back performance video featuring a focus track. The rising star will also step into our studio to record Spotify Singles and is prominently featured as the cover artist on the RADAR US playlist, with photos taken by director/photographer Kaito.

For the Record sat down with Q to talk about his musical journey, his inspirations, and how it feels to be a RADAR US artist.   

Tell us about your journey into music.

Q Standing with a microphoneMy journey started when I was a young child. The earliest memory I have is when I was five years old playing on my mom’s keyboard and going to my dad’s recording studio in Jamaica. I grew up making music and having fun exploring my creativity, which both of my parents encouraged. In high school, I traded my guitar for a MacBook and started making beats, which made me really fall in love with the production process.

From there I started rapping, but as I explored new artists and alternative sounds, my musical style shifted. After graduating high school, I released my first project to showcase my talent and people began to take notice. From there I switched my sound up, started to play guitar again, and moved into the singing that I’m doing now.

What’s your creative process like?

I don’t think about it too much, to be honest, I just wake up and think, “What am I going to do? What am I going to use?” Then I just go and chisel away at a song throughout the morning.

What would you like your fans to get out of your music?

I’d like them to hear a message of hope, to be honest. A lot of times when we listen to music, there’s more of a focus on relatability and not offering any type of solution. So I try to promote solid messages for people to help them with things like grief. I don’t want to leave people with a sense that they have to remain in the state they are currently in, because there are other emotions to explore and we don’t want to stay in just one place forever.

Which artists have inspired you the most?

Quincy Jones has really inspired me a lot because of his approach to production. Michael Jackson too, because, well, everyone listened to Michael Jackson. 

In a lot of interviews I’ve always been asked who inspired me, but I’ve never really known what to say. But this year, as I started listening to more music, I realized that the reggae artist Dennis Brown has inspired me in so many tangible ways. He’s just a really smart musician and singer.

And Drake! Oh man, Drake. When I was listening to him I was thinking, “This man is saying some deep stuff.” I just never felt like I’ve heard production on a scale that Nothing Was The Same was on. It was just mind-blowing to me.

What are you looking forward to as a RADAR US artist?

I’m looking forward to my music being in front of a lot more people. It all has to start with people listening to your music, and Spotify has given me the opportunity to showcase my work. It’s really a blessing.

Are there any Spotify for Artist tools you use regularly? 

I thought it was so cool when I was able to put the lyrics up with my songs, because it’s just a little thing that makes the listening experience better. And I’m really excited to use video elements with my music, especially on the project I’m developing now. And also, it’s not an artist tool, but I really love the DJ! I use it all the time.

Any advice for fellow emerging artists?

Be confident in what you do, but be open to listening to others. It’s amazing and easy to be confident, but sometimes it’s good to have that bit of external guidance that takes you to places you never thought you would go. It’s very important to have that balance between doing and listening.  

In my music, I’ve done everything myself. But now I know that I’m going to need new perspectives to help me evolve my sound, and that’s been helping me a lot. Even if you do 99% of the work, letting someone help you with that final one percent can go a long way.
