“Me Porto Bonito feat.

Here’s what to look out for:

Dig into your listening more deeply

It’s Here: The Top Songs, Artists, Podcasts, and Listening Trends of 2022

Gif of the Wrapped lockup on a purple background

There’s no single way to define what a year 2022 has been. Coming back after a few years of uncertainty has led each of us to create a “new normal” in our relationships to culture—and to each other. This year, Spotify listeners especially took the chance to redefine how they find joy. And now, it’s time to unveil what the world collectively delighted in and obsessed over with Spotify’s 2022 Wrapped

From the music that makes us dance to the podcasts that keep us riveted, this is the audio that bubbled to the top of Spotify listeners’ playlists.

The top global artists of 2022

It’s a three-peat for global recording artist Bad Bunny. The singer-songwriter is the year’s most-streamed artist in the world on Spotify—a spot he’s held since 2020. No other artist has ever accomplished the feat before, so to celebrate, we’ve turned the heart button on Spotify into the singer’s custom red-heart icon.

Taylor Swift held true to her invitation to meet her at midnight, and it propelled her to become the second-most-streamed artist of the year globally—and the top artist in Australia, the U.K., Ireland, Malaysia, the Philippines, New Zealand, Qatar, Slovenia, and Singapore. Rounding out the top five artists are the two very familiar Toronto powerhouses Drake and The Weeknd, along with K-Pop band BTS

Top artists globally

Plenty of artists had their worlds rocked this year by the power of social media. The most “viral” artists were those who had their music most frequently shared to social platforms from Spotify. Taylor Swift’s Midnights release certainly got the world talking, and she claims the top spot as the most viral artist globally. The second-place position goes to The Weeknd, followed by Bad Bunny. Rounding out spots four and five are BTS and Lana Del Rey

The top global songs of 2022

Song of the summer 2022 creator Harry Styles takes the coveted honor of having the most-streamed song around the globe with his hit “As It Was.” British indie rock band Glass Animals’ track “Heat Waves” is the second-most-streamed song of 2022, and fans just can’t get enough. Australian artist The Kid LAROI’s collab with Justin Bieber on “STAY” is the third-most-streamed song of the year. Bad Bunny’s “Me Porto Bonitofeat. Chencho Corleon and “Tití Me Preguntótake spots four and five, respectively.

The top global albums of 2022

So what collective body of work, in album form, was streamed most in 2022? From Spanish to English, pop to hip-hop, listeners around the world showed a variety of tastes. Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti takes the top spot for most-streamed album globally for 2022. Harry StylesHarry’s House comes in at number two. Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album, SOUR, takes the third spot for most-streamed album. British pop superstar Ed Sheeran’s album = continues to be a fan favorite at number four. And finally, American rapper and singer Doja Cat’s album Planet Her (Deluxe) grabs the fifth spot.

The top global podcasts of 2022

This year, Spotify’s podcast offerings expanded into new markets, providing more listeners around the world with new shows to binge. With more than four million podcasts, the platform offers something for every type of podcast listener. But what shows especially made their mark in 2022? Globally, the most popular podcast for the third year running is The Joe Rogan Experience. Call Her Daddy, from host Alex Cooper, takes the spot for second-most popular podcast. Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain, a soon-to-be-Spotify Exclusive touching on a variety of topics from the popular American creator, takes the third spot, while Caso 63, a Spotify Original podcast that’s debuted in Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Hindi, and English takes the fourth spot with all its language iteration feeds combined. Crime Junkie, a true-crime podcast from Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat, rounds out the list as the fifth-most popular podcast.

The global trends that shaped our year

These most-streamed artists, songs, albums, and podcasts weren’t the only guideposts that shaped our year. There were also audio trends on Spotify that brought people together through laughter, amusement, and enjoyment.

Nostalgia remains a staple in our listeners’ queues.

This year, Spotify fans were all about the aesthetic.

After two years of pandemic postponement, 2022 was the year for many to finally say, “I do.”

Little Miss, the British children’s book character, made a resurgence in 2022 with fill-in-the-blank-style memes. May we suggest “Little Miss can’t stop posting her Wrapped results”?

But a new topic that surprised everyone was corn, thanks to corn kid.

And, of course, our listeners really know their shows and movies.

And their memes.

Learn About Those Music Genres You May Not Have Heard Of

This year, you ventured into the genre-verse—and your 2022 Wrapped experience captured your journey. Did you check out the number of musical styles you explored, and gaze at your favorite five genres? Maybe you were fascinated by a genre name you didn’t know before.

There are thousands of genres out there, including new ones that are created each year. The way we see it, coming up with new names or groupings for genres gives us loose categorizations to identify emerging genres or remodel familiar ones so they are more recognizable, representative, and holistic to our listeners and their communities.

Genres like those listed in your Spotify Wrapped allow you to better identify the types of music that get you moving, catch your feels, or enable you to focus—and then find more of the same. Since music is made up of infinite types of sounds, styles, instruments, and lyrics, you can use the constellation of genres to help identify and define the sounds you like most.

Get to Know Your Music Listening Personality from 2022 Wrapped

Do you mostly listen to the same artists over and over (and over) again, or are you constantly on the hunt for something new? How about when it comes to classic tracks or recent releases? With music, everyone listens just a little bit differently, which is something 2022 Wrapped celebrates. In your personalized Wrapped experience, you may have noticed a new feature: Your Listening Personality.

Marie Rönn, Global Group Creative Director, Works Across Spotify To Bring Wrapped 2022 to Life

When you open your 2022 Spotify Wrapped, you’ll notice multicolored and multilayered graphics that are as multidimensional as your listening habits. The team behind Wrapped is just as expansive, with data scientists and engineers, copywriters, designers, music and podcast editors, and more. Uniting it all is Marie Rönn, Global Group Creative Director at Spotify. Throughout the year, she and her team ideate on concepts and collaborates with other teams to bring the project to life.

Ahead of 2022 Wrapped, For the Record chatted with Marie to learn all about her work on the creative campaign.

Wrapped has become a bit of a cultural phenomenon, with people anticipating its launch all year. When do you start thinking about the campaign?

We’ve all started thinking about next year’s Wrapped already—before this year’s Wrapped is even over. Officially, I would say I get involved in conversations in March or April. That’s when we start thinking about the brief and working with the creative strategists. This past year we managed to brief writers, art directors, and designers to have them start thinking about both the design and the platform and all of that fun stuff by the end of May.

What were some of the considerations for Wrapped this year?

We wanted to open the door to more of a joyous every day. To make sure we captured this new energy that has come out of people emerging from their bubbles and being able to meet up again. And so that’s something we were excited to dig into—to be a little bit more playful and irreverent. To have a bit of fun and encourage people to have fun as well. For the campaign, we wanted to invite people not just to get Wrapped, but to play it.

For the data stories, we asked ourselves, “What are people craving?” They want to know about their audio listening for the year, and tap into what is interesting about it—on a more emotional level. And that’s what we explored as we were starting to ideate. We had a lot of ideas—not all of them were feasible—but we worked super closely with the product team and others before landing on a couple of new data stories for this year that really tap into the more emotional side of listening.

How did that thinking translate into the new data stories for this year, your Listening Personalities and your Audio Day?

For the Listening Personalities, we were toying with the idea of how we would be able to talk about what your year-in-listening says about your music tastes. And so our team had all sorts of fun ideas of what we could tell about musical taste in terms of how you listen. The beautiful thing was that when we brought our ideas to the product team, they had already been thinking about a very similar concept, and had done tons of research into it. Great minds and teams came together to collaborate closely. Making sure that the Listening Personalities weren’t just for fun, but that they were insightful for listeners.

For the Audio Day, again, we had great synergy with the product team. We wanted to get more into moods and aesthetics and move away from genres. Genres don’t give you the nuance of what type of mood you’re in, so what we wanted to do there was to try to tell you a little bit about your musical mood throughout the year. What was your musical mood when you listened in the morning versus in the evening, or at night? The inspiration was to just give people a little bit more of a meaningful experience. Genres go deep, but they’re not the only factor in the way we listen.

Something that’s also new this year is that we added the day that you streamed your most-listened-to song the most. Peppering in a bit of fun and just a little more specific data for you to look back and think, “What was I doing that day?” Hopefully, people enjoy reminiscing.

What’s one thing you hope fans walk away with after seeing their 2022 Wrapped?

Hopefully they discover something about their listening that perhaps was a surprise. And that it also inspires them to keep discovering new music. Like, sure, we give you your year in review, but we also want to inspire you to keep the discovery going.

We did something new this year to this effect: On your Wrapped playlist are your 100 songs you listened to the most. But this year, we also included one song you didn’t listen to. A playful surprise to encourage you to keep exploring.

Spotify Celebrates Wrapped With A Totally Normal Party for 2021

On December 1 we unveiled 2021 Spotify Wrapped, enabling our listeners to reflect—and rejoice—as they got to witness and share what they listened to this year. As this was a year unlike any before, 2021 Wrapped was too. So even after the in-app experience debuted and the top artists and podcasters of the year were revealed, we couldn’t let the Wrapped energy stop there. We wanted to continue to celebrate and connect fans and artists to each other.

So last night in LA, we brought the Wrapped campaign experience to life in a way only Spotify can with A Totally Normal Party for 2021. The event featured themed audio activations, aura readings from Mystic Michaela, groove-garnering DJs, and a performance from the one and only Gwen Stefani

Musical moments

We kicked off the night with a DJ set from Lost Kings. The LA-based duo, Robert Abisi and Nick Shanholtz, gained momentum online with their catchy remixes of pop hits and are now spinning beats of their own as well.

Afterward, because no Spotify event would be complete without a surprise, the local USC Trojan Marching Band erupted through the curtains in full uniform. They played an instrumental medley of the five most streamed songs on Spotify in 2021: Olivia Rodrigo’s “drivers license,” Lil Nas X’s “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name),” The Kid LAROI’s “STAY (with Justin Bieber),” Olivia Rodrigo’s “good 4 u,” and Dua Lipa’s “Levitating”).

The Wait Is Over. Your Spotify 2021 Wrapped Is Here.

What did your 2021 sound like? Did you fall back in love with a past favorite artist, sample a genre you’d never listened to before, or binge true crime podcasts for the first time ever? However you streamed, it was uniquely you, and uniquely 2021.

Today, in addition to revealing the top music and podcasts streamed globally in 2021, we’re unveiling our annual 2021 personalized Wrapped experience for listeners. It’s inspired by the millions of weird and wonderful ways you listened this year—and by the creators who soundtracked the world around us.

In a world that continues to keep us on our toes, the 2021 Wrapped experience is full of the known and unknown, with fan-favorite experiences mixing with surprising new ones that connect listeners with each other and their favorite creators.

Learn More About the Audio Aura in Your Spotify 2021 Wrapped With Aura Reader Mystic Michaela

The songs we listen to and the playlists we create are reflections of us. They make us dance like nobody’s watching, or sing at the top of our lungs. You may not even realize it, but the music you stream matches your individual “Audio Aura”—something you may have seen in your 2021 Wrapped experience

What is an aura? According to aura reader and host of the Know Your Aura with Mystic Michaela podcast, Mystic Michaela, it’s your personal energy signature. Everyone has one, and aura readers see them as a combination of colors, each representative of the traits that make you, you.

Every year, Spotify gives listeners a personal summary of their listening habits through Wrapped. And this year, for eligible users, Wrapped includes something new: your Audio Aura.

Like you, audio has energy, so Spotify data curators worked with Mystic Michaela to connect your listening habits in 2021 to the aura spectrum by assigning a color to each of six mood descriptor categories (including “happy,” “calm,” and “hopeful,”) and matching them with tracks on Spotify.

After we created your personalized 2021 Wrapped experience, we assigned a weight percentage to the two audio “moods” that best represent your listening, and the final product is a swirling gradient of color. Below are the six moods and corresponding hues that could come up in your 2021 Wrapped Audio Aura.

  • Purple: This aura color pairs well with passionate music listeners. Purple auras tune in to get amped up, entertained, and moving while they navigate the twists and turns of their day.
  • Green: Calm, analytical, and introspective are the traits that describe a green aura. These listeners gravitate toward complex music to tame their fast-moving minds.
  • Pink: Often described as the hopeless romantics of the aura spectrum, pinks view the world with a sense of optimistic, childlike wonder.
  • Orange: Oranges are the rebellious and bold type. They share a need for high-energy, confidence-boosting sounds.
  • Yellow: Yellows like their music to align them to the goals of their day, fueling their need for focus, motivation, and self improvement all while reducing any nerves that could get in the way.
  • Blue: Blues are wistful or emotional, and this hue reflects listeners who seek out music to feel their feelings out loud.

We spoke with Mystic Michaela to learn more about auras, their relationship to music, and how knowing your aura can help you find your authentic self.

How did you realize you could see and read auras?

I’ve seen colors around people my entire life. It’s a sense to me, just like smelling. But I didn’t have a formal way of thinking about it until I was a Spanish teacher. I realized that I was differentiating instruction [to my middle school students] based on their aura colors. I saw that children with red auras thrived in competition. I saw that children with yellow auras really needed to focus on grammar. I saw that children with purple auras got the language a lot better when they could create art with it.

And so through that, I realized, this is much bigger than just colors around people. This is about people understanding themselves and understanding that “I work this way, and you work that way.” Both are OK, but you have to use this information to dive into who you are, not who you think you should be.

How do the Audio Auras provide additional insights to a person’s Wrapped?

When listeners go into their Audio Auras, I really feel like they are going to be able to see more of themselves and have an inward conversation. You know, “Who am I and why do I listen to what I’m listening to? What am I seeking? What is my inner self actually saying?” And I think that’s going to be a really creative and spiritual conversation people can have with themselves, however they want to define that.

One of your primary goals is to help people live their lives authentically. How might a person’s Audio Aura help them do that?

Let’s say I get yellow as one of my colors, because the Audio Aura yellow is very much about self-improvement and motivation and calming one’s nerves. Then I would ask myself, “Is this me, or is this something that I strive toward? What am I calming my nerves about? What parts of my life are requiring that type of energy to come in and help me?”

I think it’s helpful to ask yourself some of those questions, because your Audio Aura reveals the energy you feel comfortable in and also the vibes you want to borrow.

Throughout our lives, we’re constantly pretending to be somebody [else]. You might wear a different energy color to fit in. But when you put in your earbuds, when you put your playlist together—that’s you. And when you press next, or if you say, “I like that, I’m going to listen to it 10 times,” that’s you. And that’s why I feel so connected to Audio Auras, because whatever that reflects, it’s an extension of yourself.

6 New Features to ‘Unwrap’ in Your Spotify 2020 Wrapped

Yesterday we revealed the most-streamed music and podcasts on Spotify around the world in 2020, as well as some of the trends taking listening by storm. But today is all about you as the Spotify 2020 Wrapped personalized experience becomes available for listeners around the world.

Starting today, eligible users can access their personalized Wrapped experience exclusively in the Spotify mobile app on iOS and Android. As usual, this year’s Wrapped is full of insights on the artists, songs, genres, and podcasts that defined your listening in 2020—and it’s created from data unique to each and every listener.

This year, in addition to everything fans love most about Wrapped, we’ve also added a few new features to help you dig even deeper into your listening habits.

1. New in-app quizzes allow you to test your skills at predicting the top podcasts, artists, and even top decade you streamed most.

2. You can follow the Story of Your 2020 with your Top Song to witness your top song’s journey through the year, from its first stream to its 100th and all the notable listens in between.

3. We’ll share a deeper dive into podcast listening, complete with how many minutes users spent listening and the most binge-worthy podcast of the year.

4. Premium users can look forward to new badges that crown listeners with various titles based on the ways they listened. For example, if a number of your playlists gained significant new followers, you’ll be a Tastemaker. If you listened to a song before it was cool (aka hit 50,000 streams), you’ll get the Pioneer badge. And based on the number of songs you added to playlists this year, you just might become a Collector.

5. New personalized playlists will help you make the most of what you listened to this year. These range from Your Top Songs, the songs you loved most this year in one convenient place, to Missed Hits, our Wrapped discovery playlist where we recommend popular similar 2020 releases you didn’t listen to that we think you might like. Plus, listeners in the U.S., UK and Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada can dig deeper into some of your top artists of 2020 in On Record, a mixed media experience that highlights your top 2020 artists.

6. Finally, for the first time ever, we’re opening up the world of Wrapped to non-users. (How’s that for fighting FOMO?) Even if you’re not a Spotify subscriber, you can still check out the latest in Spotify’s global listening trends. Whether you’re looking into the most streamed podcast or the decade the world listened to the most, non-users can now join the conversation that wraps up our year in streaming. Check out the new experience at Spotify.com/Wrapped on either your desktop or your mobile browser.

As usual, today also marks the unveiling of our Wrapped Creator Experience for podcasters and artists. Creators can access their own individualized Wrapped microsite with all the ways their fans listened this year. Check out Spotify for Artists and Spotify for Podcasters to learn more.

2020 Global Streaming Trends

This year we also looked beyond the individual artists, songs, albums, and podcasts and dove into the trends that shaped streaming—the things that made it sound so different.

As people started to social distance, we saw an increase in nostalgia-themed playlists and work-from-home-themed playlists, and in listeners listening to wellness podcasts like Unlocking Us with Brené Brown and Get Sleepy: Sleep meditation and stories.
