Spotify Everywhere Shows the Way We Soundtrack Everyday Life

If it feels as though there are thousands of ways you can listen to Spotify, you’re right. In fact, we’re available on more than 2,000 devices that fit Spotify seamlessly into your life when they’re coupled with our exciting and innovative features and integrations.

As a way to showcase the many places you can listen to Spotify, we’re hosting Spotify Everywhere this week in New York City. This immersive audio experience lets guests try out interactive demos, take part in sharable photo opportunities, and discover new features that will make listening to songs and podcasts even more enjoyable.

Curious what’s on display? Here’s a glimpse at all the current (and future) ways that Spotify integrates with your life.

Lounging about in the living room

Upon arriving at Spotify Everywhere, our guests first visit our living room experience. It’s here they learn about how Spotify Connect turns Spotify into the ultimate remote control for a wide range of speakers from companies like Sony, Google, Sonos, Bose, Amazon, Roku, Ikea, Devialet, Marshall, Naim, Bang & Olufsen, and more.

We also have the Microsoft Xbox gaming station, which highlights Spotify’s custom integration with Microsoft’s console to let people listen to their favorite songs while playing the hottest new games.

But ultimately, low-key moments in the living room are also a great time to discover new music, and so we’ve been inviting guests to sit down in our listening nook and take a moment to learn about the upcoming redesign of our Home feed, which will make it even easier to discover personalized recommendations for music and podcasts in the app.

Now you’re cooking

For the foodies out there, there’s no better place to hang out than the kitchen. That’s why we’ve made sure to show how our integration with the Samsung Bespoke Family Hub™ refrigerator means all their favorite songs, podcasts, and playlists are at their fingertips while grabbing a snack. Those curious enough to peek inside will also discover a few easter eggs we left behind that offer some choice playlist recommendations.

And since no kitchen experience is complete without a little cooking, it’s here where we invite guests to grab a snack and check out our recipe book, which offers step-by-step tutorials on how to use some of Spotify’s more handy features, like how to look up lyrics to a song or make collaborative playlists with friends

The kitchen also features the Blender Bar, which provides a series of scannable QR codes that let guests experience the joy of Spotify’s Blend playlists. Combining the best of Spotify’s personalization capabilities and collaborative playlist functionality into a single shared playlist, the Blend feature allows you to combine your tastes with up to 10 friends, or with some of your favorite artists, such as Lizzo.

Where the magic happens

Next up on the Spotify Everywhere tour is a stop in the bedroom, which is where guests experience one of our most unique and innovative integrations: Philips Hue + Spotify. Any song played on Spotify is magically synced with Philips Hue’s array of smart bulbs and lamps, and the result is a symphony of light that pulses, flashes, and changes colors in time with the music.

It’s here that guests can also learn how to use the Google Clock App and our Sleep Timer feature. So whether you want to wake up to the Morning Coffee playlist or doze off with the Sleep playlist, Spotify will help make sure you’re ready to take on the day.

Time to accessorize

Those visiting Spotify Everywhere also have a chance to plunder our closet, which is full of Spotify-branded swag such as shirts, bucket hats, and socks. And they can check out some of the latest and greatest wearables, like smartwatches from Fossil and Garmin as well as wireless earbuds from Sony that take advantage of our Spotify Tap integration. With a single press of a button, anyone using Spotify Tap–enabled earbuds can jump back into the most recent playlist or album they were listening to, and even pause the audio or skip tracks.

Ready for a road trip?

While a house might serve as the setting for Spotify Everywhere, there are so many other places where you can access your favorite songs and podcasts. And so guests can step outside to the driveway to see all the ways to listen to Spotify in the car.

With our personalized Your Daily Drive playlist, the dreaded morning commute will feel like a breeze. If you’re hitting the highways and adventuring somewhere new, our in-app integrations with Google Maps and Waze will help ensure that you never get lost. And if you have a stereo equipped with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, all you have to do is connect your phone via USB to activate the in-dash experience optimized for cars.

Step into the metaverse

Sure, you can listen to Spotify from the comfort of your home or while out in the world. But did you know you can also experience Spotify in the metaverse? Earlier this year, we launched Spotify Island on Roblox, where fans and artists from all over the world can hang out and explore a wonderland of sounds, quests, and exclusive merch. And to offer a taste of the metaverse IRL, we have a 360-degree photo booth to capture our Spotify Everywhere guests in a unique way.

Fun in the sun

To cap off the Spotify Everywhere experience, our guests can grab a drink and relax in our backyard while listening to a selection of chill tracks from our DJs, Brittany Sky and Vashtie.

And it’s a well-deserved rest because, as you can see, we have a lot to share at Spotify Everywhere. Whether you’re at home, on the go, or linked up with one of our many other partners such as Delta, Tinder, or Rivian, there is no shortage of ways to access all your favorite songs and podcasts on Spotify. And hopefully, you’ve also discovered a few new ways to get the most out of your Spotify experience.

How To Make Spotify’s Sleep Timer Part of Any Bedtime Routine

Listening to music or podcasts before bed is a great way to wind down after a long day. But not everyone wants to wake up in the middle of the night to the sounds of a hype pop track from their Discover Weekly playlist. That’s why Spotify has a built-in Sleep Timer, which helps you ease into a peaceful sleep by allowing you to decide how long your music or podcast episode plays before it automatically stops.

For those across mobile devices who want to give the Sleep Timer a try, we have a few tips on how to use this handy feature:

  1. To find the Sleep Timer, tap the Now Playing bar to bring up the full Now Playing screen.
  2. While listening to podcasts, you can access the Sleep Timer directly on the Now Playing view by tapping the moon icon to the right of the play button. For music, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and scroll to the bottom of the menu where you can tap on the Sleep Timer option.
  3. Select how long you want your tunes to play. You can choose to have the music go for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour, or until the end of the track.
  4. An on-screen notification will say “OK, your sleep timer is set.”
  5. If you want to check how much time you have left on your Sleep Timer, just tap the three-dot menu, then scroll down and you’ll see the time alongside the Sleep Timer logo.

Once you’re all squared away with that, you’ll be loading up your favorite songs to help whisk you off to dreamland in no time. Sleep tight!

Looking for the right sounds to doze off to? Our Sleep playlist has everything you need to get a good night’s rest.

Make Your At-Home Dance Party Complete With Philips Hue + Spotify

If you’ve ever used a Philips Hue bulb or lamp, you know why these Wi-Fi-connected lights are so beloved. They let you use your smartphone or voice to control their brightness and colors, creating dramatic scenes that you can save as a preset, or even assign to a schedule or routine.

But there’s one other feature that we especially love: linking your Philips Hue bulbs to your Spotify account. Once the lights are synced, they’ll flash, dim, brighten, and change color right along with the beat, mood, genre, and tempo of any music you’re streaming.

Want to make your living room feel like the club ? Need a vibey wake-up call in the morning? Spotify’s Philips Hue integration turns your music into an experience you can hear, see, and feel.

To get started, you’ll need an iPhone or Android device, some Philips Hue color-capable lights, a Philips Hue Bridge, and any audio device.

Once you have those all set up, just follow these simple instructions to integrate Spotify with your Hue lights and get the party started:

  1. From the home screen of the Philips Hue smartphone app, select the Sync icon at the bottom, then tap the Get Started button.
  2. When the app asks how you want to sync your lights, tap the Spotify account button and then tap Next.
  3. Follow the prompts to connect your Spotify account with the Philips Hue app. When the process is complete, an on-screen notification will say “Success!”
  4. Afterward, if you have lights in multiple areas, you can choose which rooms or zones you want Spotify to sync with. You can also select the Google or Alexa voice assistants to use with this integration.
  5. Once you’re all set, you just have to start playing a song on Spotify and then tap the Sync button in the Philips Hue app to transform your space into a symphony of light and sound.

Get Ready For ‘Stranger Things 4’ Volume 2 With Our Upside Down Playlist Made Just For You

stranger things cast standing in the upside down

Stranger Things took the action and suspense to a new level when Season 4, Vol. 1 premiered earlier this summer. In one of the most memorable moments of the season, Max escaped the grasp of Vecna by pressing play on her favorite song: Kate Bush’sRunning Up That Hill (A Deal With God).” And with Season 4, Vol. 2 coming July 1, we just released a new personalized playlist that will help you do the same.

The Upside Down Playlist takes some of your favorite songs and mixes them with a handful of Stranger Things classics to create a vibe strong enough to ward off Hawkins’ most fearsome foe.

But for those who have been counting down the days until the heartened Hawkins heroes return, Spotify has more playlists and experiences on our Netflix Hub that will make that wait a whole lot easier.

On July 1, we’ll be adding all the latest sounds from Season 4, Vol. 2 to the Stranger Things Official Playlist following the premiere. But before then, there are some fun Easter eggs for you to explore: On Android and desktop, you can watch the progress bar turn into a flashlight that cuts through the darkness of the Upside Down. And if you scroll through the playlist long enough on mobile, you might discover something spine-tingling. . .

We also had Caleb McLaughlin, aka Lucas, take over our Throwback Thursday playlist and pick some of his favorite ’80s jams that help get him into character and immersed in the ’80s vibes of the show.

And since we’ve had Stranger Things on the brain, we also took a dive into our listening stats and discovered the songs and playlists that are resonating most with fans.

Kate Bush streams soared up a mountain

When it comes to the Season 4 soundtrack, nothing has captured the hearts (and ears) of fans quite like Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God).” On May 30, following the Season 4 premiere, Spotify streams of the ’80s hit increased by more than 8,700% globally and an even more impressive 9,900% in the U.S.

Fueled by the excitement from Stranger Things fans around the world, this new-wave classic is having a massive cultural moment. The song is so popular that it has earned a place in music history as the first catalog track to have ever earned a spot on Spotify’s flagship Today’s Top Hits playlist.

“Great music is timeless and Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)’ is now a bigger hit today than it was when it was released in 1985. New audiences (particularly amongst younger listeners) around the world who are discovering and sharing the song are driving massive stream counts and engagement on Spotify,” Sulinna Ong, Spotify’s Global Head of Editorial, told For the Record. “And whilst Today’s Top Hits normally reflects the latest releases, we felt strongly that we needed to make a first-of-its-kind exception as we are witnessing a truly unique cultural phenomenon.”

But whether they were discovering Kate Bush or revisiting an old favorite, fans haven’t just flocked to this one song: Global streams of Kate Bush’s catalog have increased by more than 1,600% since the Stranger Things Season 4 premiere.

The Stranger Things effect

Stranger Things’ sixth sense when it comes to picking iconic songs doesn’t stop at Kate Bush. Following the Season 4 premiere, streams of Musical Youth’s reggae hit “Pass The Dutchie” increased by more than 1,000%, revealing the love for Argyle and his comic misadventures in the Surfer Boy Pizza van.

And after fans finished binging the new episodes, they immediately flocked to Spotify to continue the party. On May 30, streams of the Stranger Things Official Playlist increased by more than 1,700% globally. With more than 969,000 followers, it’s also the most followed playlist on the Netflix Hub.

The thrilling conclusion to Season 4 will be here before you know it, so brace yourself by streaming the Stranger Things Official Playlist below.

Spotify Island Brings New Experiences for Fans and Artists to Roblox

a luscious green land with flowers and plants depicts Spotify Island on Roblox. The singer SUNMI is on a giant screen on the island.

Roblox fans, pack your bags—Spotify is entering your world. Today, we are introducing Spotify Island, a paradise of sound where fans and artists from all over the world can hang out and explore a wonderland of sounds, quests, and exclusive merch.

Spotify is the first music-streaming brand to have a presence on Roblox, a virtual universe where users can create and play games and share experiences with friends. Through this interactive world, we’re creating a place where fans can link up and create new sounds together, hang out in digital spaces, and gain access to exclusive virtual merch. Spotify Island is an audio oasis that has it all.

Roblox users can mingle with artists, complete interactive quests, and unlock exclusive content. Players can also enjoy an immersive audio experience by creating music and exploring sounds at the virtual beat-maker stations powered by Soundtrap. The island will have other musical Easter eggs at every turn for eagle-eyed users to discover. Users can even climb to the top of “The Charts” by collecting points.

Spotify and Google Announce User Choice Billing

Today, we are excited to announce a new chapter in our partnership with Google: a multiyear agreement that represents a first-of-its-kind option in payment choice and offers opportunities for both consumers and developers.

Users who’ve downloaded Spotify from the Google Play Store will be presented with a choice to pay with either Spotify’s payment system or with Google Play Billing. For the first time, these two options will live side by side in the app. This will give everyone the freedom to subscribe and make purchases using the payment option of their choice directly in the Spotify app. Spotify will continue to freely communicate with users about our Premium subscription service, promote discounts and promotions, and give listeners on our Free tier the ability to convert to Premium directly in the app.

Over the coming months, Spotify will work with Google’s product and engineering teams to build this new experience, and we’ll roll out in countries around the world. Working together, the companies will test and learn, jointly exploring product innovations across the Android platform. We anticipate launching the first iteration of User Choice Billing later this year.

Spotify has been publicly advocating for platform fairness and expanded payment options, among other things, because fair and open platforms enable better consumer experiences and allow developers to grow and thrive—when this happens everyone wins.

Alex Norström, Chief Freemium Business Officer, commented, “Spotify is on a years-long journey to ensure app developers have the freedom to innovate and compete on a level playing field. We’re excited to be partnering with Google to explore this approach to payment choice and opportunities for developers, users, and the entire internet ecosystem. We hope the work we’ll do together blazes a path that will benefit the rest of the industry.”

“Android has always been about openness and user choice,” said Sameer Samat, Vice President, Product Management at Google. “This step is an important milestone for mobile app stores and I can’t imagine a better first partner than Spotify. They value choice as much as we do and understand the importance and continued investment in Android and Play to the health of the entire ecosystem. This is an exciting first step and we look forward to adding new partners and learning how this model could be expanded across the platform.”

How To Drive With Spotify and Waze

Music and road trips pair well together—and so do Spotify and the navigation app Waze. In 2017, Spotify and Waze teamed up to bring your favorite artists and music directly into the Waze app, enabling a more musical, enjoyable journey in which users could get both the best directions and playlists in the car without having to switch screens.

Since then, plenty of Spotify and Waze users have been able to navigate with Waze from within Spotify as well as access their Spotify playlists from within Waze and easily change tracks.

Spotify and FC Barcelona Announce a First-of-Its-Kind Partnership To Bring Music and Football Together

It’s official: Spotify and FC Barcelona are pleased to announce a long-term partnership, which officially kicks off in July 2022, where Spotify will become the Main Partner of the Club and the Official Audio Streaming Partner. Our brand will appear on the front of both men’s and women’s team shirts and training shirts beginning in the 2022-2023 season. Spotify and FC Barcelona will work together to create opportunities for the iconic shirt to be a space that celebrates artists from across the world. Spotify will also become Title Partner of the Stadium with the historic Camp Nou stadium rebranded Spotify Camp Nou.

Additionally, Spotify will use the partnership to shine a spotlight on artists from all over the world. This will bring the worlds of music and football together, giving a global stage to players and artists at Spotify Camp Nou.

The partnership plans are subject to the ratification of the Barcelona Members Assembly, which will take place in early April.

For the Record spoke with Spotify’s Chief Freemium Business Officer, Alex Norström, to offer more insight into what fans can expect from this unique deal.

Why did Spotify decide to partner with FC Barcelona?

That’s a great question. Why do Spotify and FC Barcelona make sense together? Why do music and football make sense together? There are a lot of answers from different perspectives—the business perspective, the brand perspective, the marketing perspective. All of which are important.

But for Spotify the answer is very simple: It’s about connecting fans with artists of every kind—players and artists, music and sports. Barcelona fans and audio lovers on Spotify will come together to form a massive, globally connected community bridging the worlds of music and football. The vision for the partnership is to create a new platform to help artists interact with Barcelona’s global community of fans.

As we look to grow the Spotify brand worldwide, there are few partners that have this sort of scale and global reach. Being able to connect music and football fans from Barcelona to Mumbai, Jakarta to Rio de Janeiro, is really a unique opportunity.

Can you talk about how the partnership took shape?

Our vision for the partnership is this: Spotify and FC Barcelona want to bring the worlds of music and football together, giving a global stage to players and artists at Spotify Camp Nou and building new opportunities to connect with fans.

Spotify has never undertaken a partnership at this scale before, but we realized that the magic is approaching ambitious projects at this scale. We’ve always used our marketing as a platform for artists, so it’s adding another huge stage, literally a stadium, to help artists interact with fans around the world. Barça’s games attract a huge, global viewership per season and we’re looking forward to working with them to connect artists to this audience.

When visiting the stadium and walking down the hallowed corridors of Camp Nou with its breathtaking scale and unmatched legacy, I felt the power, emotion, and aura of the players, the managers, and the fans who call Camp Nou home. It’s a privilege for Spotify to support and become a part of the FC Barcelona family and history.

We also love that FC Barcelona is committed to equality and supporting and cultivating diverse talent. These are values to which Spotify is equally committed. So the easiest part of assembling this partnership is supporting both the men’s and women’s team. We’re now proud partners of FC Barcelona, the women, the men, the institution.

What’s the vision for how this partnership will come to life? What can music fans and fans of FC Barcelona expect?

We plan to bring this partnership to life in two key ways. First, Camp Nou will become Spotify Camp Nou. Already the home of FC Barcelona fans, Spotify Camp Nou will also put a spotlight on artists and other creators

Spotify is working with Barça to leverage our access to in-stadium elements to amplify artists and enable discovery. For example, using the dynamic digital displays to showcase and geo-target relevant artists to Barça’s global TV audience. While viewers in Europe may see a message about one artist, TV viewers in India could be served a different and locally relevant message.

Second, as shirt sponsor, Spotify will work to create a new platform to amplify artist voices. We think this can be more than just a Spotify logo on a shirt. The question we’ve asked is: How can Spotify work with FC Barcelona to make the shirt a bigger platform with more opportunities for artists?

If you think about how we’ve used our marketing platforms in the past, which regularly spotlight new and female artists through our EQUAL and RADAR programs, you can get a sense of the approach we’ll be thinking about for the partnership. We are excited to see what we can dream up together.

There are also other exciting pieces to this partnership that we’re considering, and we’ll share more later this year.

Could you share more on the benefits you see for artists and fans?

Spotify has always used its investment in marketing to amplify and champion artists. So we’re taking that same approach and applying it to this partnership.

More fans engaging with our platform means more opportunities for creators to live off of their art, and FC Barcelona’s massive global fan base will help fuel that growth. And for fans—both music and Barça fans—we’ll be creating more interactive and exciting experiences to connect with the artists they love.

FC Barcelona has legions of young fans across the world—in fact, most of Barça’s fans are under the age of 30, which is a hugely important audience for Spotify. Those fans also reside in some of Spotify’s fastest-growing markets, including India, Latin America, and Indonesia.

Against that backdrop, Spotify will be able to amplify the work of artists to new potential fans and supporters.

Celebrate today’s news by following FC Barcelona’s official profile on Spotify. To get further details on our partnership check out the release here
