EQUAL Marks Two Years of Celebrating Women Artists And Spotify Announces the Next EQUAL FEST

From Japan to Argentina, Malaysia to the U.K., women artists, engineers, and producers continue to be vastly underrepresented in the music industry. But there’s incredible talent worldwide that must be highlighted and celebrated. So in 2020 Spotify launched EQUAL, an always-on global program to drive equity for women in music. EQUAL represents our commitment to amplifying the voices of women musicians and creators locally, regionally, and internationally.

The more fans listen to women, the more opportunities that are created so that women can enter the industry. Through our suite of EQUAL playlists and marketing tools, we provide women with more space on and off our platform to share their work; at the same time, we’re giving fans the chance to remember that by listening, they too are taking action.

“EQUAL is about the power of raising voices together to drive equity in music and standing together to fight for a common goal that has no borders—it’s about acknowledging the difficulties and celebrating each other all year round,” says Bel Aztiria, Equity Global Music Programs Lead at Spotify. “It is much more than a program: EQUAL represents a mission and a community that stands together.”

Celebrating two years of EQUAL

Two years later, the work is far from done, but we have a lot to be proud of as we continue on this journey. Our EQUAL artists have collectively wracked up millions of streams and advanced other women creators in the process.

“On platform, in the studio, onstage, and on billboards, more women are having their voices heard, no matter where they come from and no matter at what stage of their career they are,” says Bel. “Beyond global support, EQUAL honors this as its mission with the deepest respect for each local culture. Since our inception, we have launched 40 local EQUAL programs. Thanks to these programs, we’ve been able to host the first-ever EQUAL Festival with an all-women lineup in Colombia, offer studio residencies in the U.S., and invite women to our offices in France to participate in mentorship opportunities; and we’ve seen sorority and artistry prevail every time we come together.”

Catch some of EQUAL’s notable stats.

EQUAL Fest resumes this September in Spain

Last April, we held the first-ever EQUAL Fest in Bogotá, Colombia. Thirteen outstanding women musicians, each representing a variety of genres, took to the stage at El Teatro throughout the month. The headliners—Goyo, Paola Jara, Lido Pimienta, Andrea Echeverri, Farina, Elsa y Elmar, Ventino, Karen Lizarazo, Juliana Velásquez, Nidia Góngora, María Cristina Plata, Bad Milk, and Las Villa—collectively represented over 3.4 million monthly listeners as made a statement for gender equality in music on stage.

“Being a part of the first EQUAL Fest was really an honor,” Elsa y Elmar, a singer-songwriter who creates synth-pop music with a folk flair, wrote to For the Record. “I am a woman musician from Colombia, but most of my music is done in Mexico City. So being considered as one of the first Colombian women to inaugurate this festival made me feel proud of my journey and actually very thankful for the support that Spotify has given me.”

“As women, it can be a bit harder—if not much harder,” she noted. “So, it’s really a space for empowerment, it’s a space for acknowledging our place in the music industry, and it just feels really special. Sometimes music made from a woman’s perspective is different: It’s sentimental, it’s special, it has a different value than other music. So creating a space for that, where people know what they’re going to get, is just a very, very valuable thing.”

On September 22, we’ll bring EQUAL back for a full-volume, all-women set of performances at EQUAL FEST held at the Wizink Center in Madrid, Spain. We’re excited to share that Argentinian Spanish singer, songwriter, and dancer Nathy Peluso will headline alongside several other established and developing Spanish and Latin women artists.

“There are so many women artists, and we are claiming our space and visibility,” says Nathy. “That’s why I’m happy to be a part of EQUAL and to continue to build fairer spaces. It’s an honor to perform at EQUAL FEST with so many incredible women.”

More must be done to put women artists front and center, and with Spotify EQUAL Fest in Madrid we’re turning up the volume on women and reminding everyone that they can be part of a more equal world.

Tickets will be available soon—so stay tuned for more details.

“We’re so proud of what EQUAL has achieved in its first two years: through our editorial, marketing, and partnership capabilities, we have celebrated and uplifted the voices of thousands of women artists on and off the platform, and our ambassador program has celebrated almost 800 women artists from over 50 countries,” Bel noted.

And there’s much more to come.

GLOW Artist LUDMILLA Has Found Happiness in Family, Music, and Connection

LUDMILLA GLOW

Since making her musical debut in 2014 with “Hoje,” Brazilian hitmaker LUDMILLA has won a Latin Grammy and become the first Black singer in Latin America to reach more than one billion streams on Spotify. And now the groundbreaking singer is this month’s GLOW artist and the cover of our flagship GLOW playlist.

GLOW is Spotify’s global music program celebrating and amplifying LGBTQIA+ artists and creators. It’s our latest initiative through our Creator Equity Fund to support people of this historically marginalized community of voices and reassert our commitment to equity in audio. It ensures that LGBTQIA+ creators, and their contributions to music and culture, are heard and honored year-round.

It’s safe to say that LUDMILLA has experienced significant growth since her beginnings under the pseudonym MC Beyoncé. She’s gone on to release a series of hit albums that include tracks like “Maldivas” and “Cheguei.” She’s also taken part in countless collaborations, such as her song “CAFÉ DA MANHĀ ;P” with Luísa Sonza, which reached streams in the tens of millions. Her second studio album, Numanice #2, made a resounding debut, with every track reaching Spotify Brazil’s Top 200 list one day after its release.

2022 was a particularly laudable year for the stalwart Brazilian singer-songwriter: She was celebrated as an EQUAL Brazil artist, she showed listeners how she uses Spotify Artist Wrapped, and, most notable, Numanice #2 won the Latin Grammy for Best Samba/Pagode Album.

For the Record sat down with LUDMILLA to talk about finding her voice and what makes her GLOW

Tell us about your musical journey. How did you find your voice?

In a very natural way. Since I was a child, I’ve loved singing, and my family always encouraged me by taking me to samba sessions and helping me in small ways. Eventually, I started writing music and making rhymes. And then 11 years ago, a video I made suddenly went viral.

Why is it important to amplify LGBTQIA+ voices year-round?

Because as much as our fight has moved ahead, we’re still looking for respect and to just live as we are, since so many people have died just for being queer. It’s very important to continue this movement and carry the message further so more and more people will have access to resources and we can make the world a better place.

What might people be surprised to learn about you?

That I really like outdoor activities. On trips, for example, I always suggest something radical to do, even if we’re in a place to rest and relax. I always take it up a notch!

What do you hope people take away from your music?

Emotion! I always make my songs with so much dedication and truth, and I try to get as close as possible to people’s feelings.

Who are some queer artists or cultural icons who have inspired you?

Nowadays, Majur, Liniker, and Gloria Groove. There are also the guys who came before them, when queerness was not even discussed, like Ana Carolina, Marina Lima, Cássia Eller, Ney Matogrosso . . . icons! They deserve all the applause!

What makes you GLOW?

Being happy, which involves being with my boo and my whole family. It’s very important for me to say that since I made the relationship with my wife public, I have flourished. I’ve lost some things, of course, but gained so much more, including public support.

How does music empower queer communities?

Having more and more queer artists on the scene, representing themselves, addressing the subject by contributing socially and raising discussions. There are several ways, each with its own purpose. The main thing is to give space for them to communicate because the more information is out there, the more knowledge people will have, allowing them to respect all of us.

What is the best piece of advice you received while growing as an artist and as a person?

There have been so many words of advice, I wouldn’t know how to say just one. But something I’ll never forget, mainly because it was very strong in my heart, especially in moments when I got discouraged, was that I couldn’t give up. And so I didn’t, and I went on guiding myself and reaching better and better places.

A Artista GLOW, LUDMILLA, Encontrou a Felicidade na Família, Música e Amigos

LUDMILLA GLOW

Eu comecei a escrever músicas e criar meus beats.

Eu sempre procuro me desafiar!

Continuei me guiando e alcançando lugares cada vez melhores.

Brazilian Hitmaker Ludmilla Uses Spotify Artist Wrapped To Track How Far She’s Come

Spotify listeners all over the world are taking part in Wrapped and learning about their listening habits. And just as fans are excited for Wrapped, creators are feeling the anticipation too.

Since its inception, Artist Wrapped has become a moment that artists look forward to all year. Now in its sixth year, Artist Wrapped is a personalized microsite presented by Spotify for Artists that allows creators to discover how their music connected with fans across the world that year. They can see how much they’ve grown by viewing their total hours streamed, followers and listeners stats, playlist adds, total number of shares, and more.

One artist who will definitely be checking out her Artist Wrapped is Ludmilla, who since making her musical debut in 2014 with Hoje, has become the first Black singer in Latin America to reach more than one billion streams on Spotify.

With hit studio and live albums including countless collaborations and tracks such as “Maldivas,” “Cheguei,” and “CAFÉ DA MANHĀ ;P” with Luísa Sonza reaching streams in the tens of millions, it’s safe to say that Ludmilla has had some significant growth since the days when she went by MC Beyoncé.

This year was a particularly sterling one for the Brazilian singer-songwriter, with Numanice #2 winning a Latin Grammy for Best Samba/Pagode Album.

For the Record caught up with Ludmilla to talk about her music, advice she’d give to other artists, and what she’s looking forward to most with 2022’s Artist Wrapped.

It’s been about eight years since the release of your first album, Hoje. How has your music evolved since then?

It evolved as I grew up, both as a person and as a professional. With each experience, I acquired more knowledge and I became more confident. Even my way of composing changed over time. With all these life changes, I discovered that I am a multifaceted artist, that I can sing other rhythms and work in other areas as long as it’s something I really believe in that I actually feel able to deliver.

As the first Black singer in Latin America to reach more than one billion streams on Spotify, what advice do you have for other Black Latin artists?

I usually say that there is no recipe, but I really believe that an artist’s authenticity matters so much. Of course, we all have inspirations, but it is extremely important to assume your own identity and give a face to both your project and your career.

What has your experience with Artist Wrapped been like?

Being able to access my data as an artist and know how the audience is consuming my music on the platform is amazing.

What were some of your personal 2022 highlights?

Wow! I had a really incredible year and many remarkable things happened, starting with the release of the album Numanice #2, which immediately placed all the songs in the top 200. Soon after, I started the celebrations of my 10 years in music, and launched an EP of funk that recalls my days as MC Beyoncé, at the beginning of my career. This was followed by a nomination in the “Best International Act” category at the B.E.T Awards.

Time passed and the Rock in Rio concert came. And now, finally, the apotheotic edition of Numanice, at Marquês de Sapucaí, in Rio de Janeiro—which broke an audience record with an audience of 33,000 people. And Numanice #2 won the Latin Grammy for best samba/pagode album.

There were more things, but I think these already give an idea of how wonderful my year has been.

What type of information have you been able to take away from previous years of Artist Wrapped that has helped you plan for the next year?

All. This data is very important to drive the work, to understand what the audience is listening to the most, how the music is performing . . .  In short, it is an incredible tool for the artist’s growth.

Brazilian Hitmakers Play With Genre for Latin America’s First Spotify Singles Series

Summer is in full swing in Brazil, and now, so is Latin America’s first-ever Spotify Singles series. As Brazilians soak up the sun, buzzy artists Os Barões Da Pisadinha, LUDMILLA, Matheus & Kauan, and more are inviting listeners to stream seven new Spotify Singles songs exclusively on Spotify. From January 26 to February 16, fans will see new tracks debut on Spotify Brazil’s official summer playlist Vem, Verão!

The Spotify Singles program launched in 2016 as a creative outlet for artists as they revisit their songs, engage their fans, and connect with new listeners. More than 5 billion streams later, Spotify Singles continues to surprise audiences around the world. This special summer release is no different. It marks an innovative moment in the program as Spotify challenged Brazil’s artists to explore rhythms and genres outside their usual sound.

“This Singles series was created as a place to highlight and celebrate the summer through Carnival, all while catering to genre listening trends we have been identifying in the market. We brought the idea to our partners and found artists who were eager to be a part of it. The artists then took the idea into their own hands and created all these amazing representations of the rich culture Brazil has to offer,” said Carolina Alzuguir, Artists and Label Partnerships Lead for Spotify in Brazil.

The singles take inspiration from the most-listened-to genres in Brazil during the summer, including pisadinha, Brazilian funk (also referred to as funk carioca), and brega funk. Pisadinha is an offshoot of the popular Brazilian genre forró, a rhythmic music style that features the accordion and triangle. Inspired by Miami’s flourishing hip-hop scene, Rio de Janeiro’s Brazilian funk music pulls from a number of different genres to create a uniquely local sound made for dancing. And brega funk, which originated in Northern Brazil, is a branch of Brazilian funk known for its heavy bass and offbeat rhythms.

Follow along as beloved Brazilian artists embrace genre fluidity and try their hands at a fresh sound. Here are the songs making every day feel like a summer celebration, no matter where you listen:

Released in January

Releasing in February

  • Next, on February 7, Brazilian funk and pop queen LUDMILLA promises a surprise with her trap version of “Fora de Si.”
  • MC Hariel, who is known for his impact on the São Paulo funk scene, will push the boundaries this summer with a reggaeton version of “Pirâmide Socialon February 9.
  • PEDRO SAMPAIO has a sweet surprise in store for February 14. He teamed up with Anitta once again to reenvision the catchy hitNO CHÃO NOVINHA” as a techno brega bop.
  • And Rebecca will close the summer Spotify Singles series by introducing a new brega funk version of the techno pop hit “Barbie” with the help of Mexican singer Dulce María, the Colombian rapper Farina, and Mc Danny on February 16.
