Plot Twist: 3 New Ways to Discover and Explore Audiobooks on Spotify

Whether you’re into epic fantasies or juicy celebrity memoirs, getting lost in a great book is always time well spent. Now, Spotify is making it easier than ever to discover new stories and dive deeper into what you’re already listening to with three new features that let you create personalized audiobook playlists, explore more by talking to Spotify, and continue your favorite series right where you left off.

These updates help listeners spend less time searching and more time inside the story. Together they bring more books to more people and are the latest reasons why Spotify is the best place to be a fan.

“Books are one of the most powerful ways people spend time on Spotify, and our focus is making it easier than ever to discover great stories and stay immersed in them,” said James Jacoby, Senior Director of Engineering & Insights, Audiobooks at Spotify. “With these new features, we’re reducing the friction between listeners and the books they’ll love. Helping people spend less time searching and more time inside the story, while advancing our mission to get more books to more people.”

Here’s a look at what’s new.

Prompted Playlist for audiobooks

Last year, we introduced Prompted Playlist in beta, giving listeners the ability to soundtrack any moment by describing what they want in their own words. We then expanded the feature to podcasts, where more than half of those who have used it have found a new-to-them show. Now with Prompted Playlist for audiobooks, we’re bringing that same personalized discovery to a whole new format.

Just type in the kind of book you want to listen to, and Spotify will serve up a tailored playlist based on your personal tastes and what’s trending in the literary world right now.

Want to catch up on what’s popular? Try asking for, “A list of books with adaptations from the last three years that are beloved or critically acclaimed.”

Or, get creative with a request like, “Make me an audiobook calendar. Start with the current month and pick one book per month, under 15 hours. Each book should be a perfect thematic fit for the month while also being a book that fits my listening habits.”

You can customize your playlists to refresh daily or weekly so you always have new recommendations to explore.

We’ll continue improving the experience as we learn from listeners and their feedback. As we expand in this beta phase, some aspects may evolve, with usage limits in place while we test and learn. Prompted Playlist for Audiobooks is rolling out in beta to eligible Premium users in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.

Just ask Spotify

There’s a new way to discover and explore music, podcasts, and audiobooks.

Now, all you have to do is type or use your voice to have a back-and-forth conversation with Spotify. Request new recommendations, ask about the story you’re currently listening to, and more, with questions like, “What Scandinavian noir should I listen to for my upcoming trip to Sweden?” or “Where does the Cyclops first appear in The Odyssey?”

Because Spotify understands follow-up questions, your listening session will evolve in real time and can seamlessly switch between music, podcast, and audiobook requests.

This conversational experience is available in English to eligible Premium subscribers aged 18+ in the U.S., Ireland, and Sweden.

Never lose the plot between books

When a book ends on a cliffhanger, you want the next installment immediately. Now, finding out where the story goes takes just one tap.

As soon as you finish a book in a series, Spotify will recommend the next title so you can keep the adventure going. Books belonging to a multi-part saga will also now be marked, while dedicated series pages map out the exact reading order. You can also head to an author’s profile page to explore all the series they’ve written.

Calling all wizards, witches, and Muggles, we are pleased to inform you that you have been invited to conjure up the magic of the Harry Potter audiobook series as part of your Spotify Premium subscription

In collaboration with Pottermore Publishing, we’re bringing the classic English-language audiobooks to Spotify users in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and other select markets. For the first time, listeners can stream all seven Harry Potter audiobooks, and enjoy the narration by legendary British actor Stephen Fry (in all markets) or award-winning narrator Jim Dale (in North America).

“This is an iconic series of books, narrated by two legends, and loved by generations of fans around the world. We are delighted that these books are now available to an even wider audience on Spotify, as we continue to connect readers and fandoms with stories they love, and bring more books to more people. Combined with the companion titles, movie soundtracks, and podcasts, Spotify is the best place to get completely immersed in the wizarding world,” said Duncan Bruce, Director of Partnerships and Licensing at Spotify.

In addition to the main series, we’re also introducing companion Harry Potter titles in select markets including The Tales of Beedle the Bard, narrated by an all-star cast including Jude Law, Noma Dumezweni and Bonnie Wright, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, narrated by actor Eddie Redmayne, and Quidditch Through the Ages, narrated by actor Andrew Lincoln.

This time, the magic doesn’t end with the final chapter. Listeners can also explore the official film soundtracks on Spotify, offering even more ways to immerse themselves in the wizarding world.

Nearly three decades after the series’ debut, the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling continue to enchant audiences worldwide. Now, longtime fans and new audiences alike can visit Spotify to experience the story about the boy who lived.

Books on Spotify: New Updates for Listeners and Authors

a spotify logo on a blue and green graphic images

In 2022, Spotify entered a new chapter by introducing audiobooks to our platform. Since then, we’ve grown our catalog to include more than 700,000 titles, expanded to 22 markets, and launched industry-leading features that give book lovers more ways to enjoy great stories.

At Investor Day 2026, we announced a new set of updates designed to enhance the reading experience for listeners, authors, and publishers as we continue building Spotify into the home for books.

For listeners: More hours and more discovery

This summer, we’re expanding Audiobooks+ with new add-on tiers. These higher-hourly plans will give our most engaged audiobook listeners the flexibility to spend even more time with the stories they love.

Later this year, Family and Student plans for Audiobooks+ will bring the experience to the entire household including young readers, making it easier to share stories and build listening habits together.

a graphic showing the spotify UI and starting the new plan

We’re also introducing new discovery features for audiobooks. Users can now ask questions about to helpfind something new. Request other titles from the same author or books related to a topic you’re interested in—like Scandinavian noir for your upcoming trip to Sweden—and we’ll bring you recommendations tailored to your tastes.

And later this summer, our personalized discovery tool Prompted Playlist will expand to audiobooks. Already available in beta for music and podcasts, Prompted Playlist lets you describe exactly what you want to listen to, then creates a playlist based on your listening history and what’s happening in the world around you. By expanding the feature to audiobooks, we’re making it easier to find your next great read.

For authors: More languages and creation tools

Spotify for Authors is expanding to 10 new languages—French, Canadian French, German, Dutch, Latin American Spanish, Swedish, Finnish, Icelandic, Danish, and Norwegian—making our audience insights and publishing tools accessible to more writers worldwide.

And this June, we’re launching invite-only Audiobook Creation Tools in beta to help self-published authors create audio versions of their books. Built directly into Spotify for Authors, and powered by ElevenLabs’ digital voice technology, authors can now access seamless audiobook generation and publishing without exclusive contracts. It’s one more way we’re helping more books reach listeners. At launch this will be in English language only, and available in select markets.

The story so far

Audiobooks on Spotify are growing faster than ever. Listening hours are up 60% year over year, and nearly half of audiobook listeners started listening in the last year, with many discovering the format for the first time through Spotify.

Innovations like Page Match are helping fuel this growth. The feature, which lets users move between a print or ebook and its audiobook on Spotify, has become one of our most successful launches to date. We’ve seen an uplift in listening of up to 55% over a month when readers use Page Match, helping listeners finish books twice as fast. That’s a win for audiences and authors alike.

Audiobooks+ is also making an impact. With 1 million subscribers so far, the offering is on track to generate $100 million in annualized recurring revenue. And our most engaged users—those who read, listen, and watch on Spotify— become part of the most engaged audience on Spotify, showing that multi-format listening habits help create deeper connections across the platform.

From Page to Stage: Spotify Celebrates Storytelling at the LA Times Festival of Books

Group of people posing with author

This past weekend, Spotify was at the heart of the largest literary event in the U.S.: the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. As the presenting sponsor of the Audiobook and Podcast Stage on the USC campus, we spent April 18 and 19 celebrating the authors, stories, and fans that make up book culture. From mainstage panels to an invite-only party with Rick Ross, the event highlighted our belief that great stories deserve to be heard, shared, and experienced across multiple formats. It was also a chance to bring the Spotify experience into the real world and connect storytellers with fans.

Center stage with leading authors

The Spotify Audiobook and Podcast Stage hosted discussions with two of today’s most exciting authors.

First, we explored how a single story can build a universe of fans across different mediums

with Remarkably Bright Creatures author Shelby Van Pelt and film director Olivia Newman. Moderated by Spotify Senior Audiobooks Editor Zack Knoll, the panel examined how a story evolves as it moves from page to audiobook to a highly anticipated Netflix film.

Then, on Sunday, we welcomed S.A. Cosby, the New York Times bestselling author known for “Southern noir” crime fiction, for a discussion on storytelling in the digital age. Moderated by David Dastmalchian, host of the video podcast Grave Conversations, the panel explored the creative process and what it means to connect with readers in an era of audiobooks, podcasts, and social media. Cosby’s work shows that great storytelling transcends any single format, finding new audiences and new life through audio.

Spotify Editors Reveal Their Picks for Best Book of the Century (So Far)

Best Books of the Century

From gripping thrillers to poignant memoirs, the 21st century has had no shortage of unforgettable books. To celebrate the standout storytelling of our modern era, we’re launching Best of the Century So Far—a curated audiobook collection of titles released each year between 2001 and 2025, hand‑picked by our North American audiobook editors.

For the Record caught up with a few of the editors behind the collection to discover which books earned their personal number‑one spot, and why these stories should be on everyone’s radar.

Ling Mas Severance (2018) is truly one of my favorites of all time. It’s a razor-sharp, bleakly funny reckoning with what it means to sleepwalk through work, routine, and the end of the world—and the most unputdownable indictment of late-stage capitalism I’ve ever read.” —Katie del Rosario, Associate Director, Audiobooks Editorial

“Any list of my all-time favorite books would have to start with Jennifer Egan’s A Visit from the Goon Squad (2010). At first glance, it’s the story of an aging punk rocker’s descent into obscurity as he’s battered by the inevitable passage of time—but the book’s magic is in its reminder that our stories live on, in the fabric of memory, long after we’re gone.” —Zack Knoll, Senior Editor, Audiobooks

Piranesi (2020) by Susanna Clarke is a singular experience. It’s dreamy and labyrinthine, with a tinge of horror, all anchored by one of the most endearing protagonists you’ll ever meet. The audiobook, which I’ve listened to three times, no less, is a treat for the ears. Who can resist narration by Chiwetel Ejiofor?!” —Lena Yang, Senior Editor, Audiobooks

“A forever favorite—and pure magic in audio—The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (2017) by Taylor Jenkins Reid sweeps you into a world of love, sacrifice, and heartbreak.” —Annie Pritchard, Senior Editor, Audiobooks

“I have to go with The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2008) by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer. It’s everything I love in a book, and the multi-cast audiobook really elevates it. It’s epistolary (told through letters) so each character is sharing their own perspective. You get all these different voices and a kind of intimacy that’s hard to achieve outside of an epistolary novel. This style of storytelling is my favorite.” —Jamie Belardo, Managing Editor, Audiobooks

Inside the 2025 Audiobook Trends on Spotify: Romantasy, Modern Classics, and What’s Next

From page-turning thrillers to inspiring memoirs, audiobooks are becoming a core part of the daily listening habits of fans around the world. And this year, audiobooks appear in the main Spotify Wrapped experience for the first time, highlighting how many titles a listener finished and their top audiobook and audiobook genre. It’s a major moment of visibility for the format.

To celebrate, we’re taking a closer look at the genres, authors, and moments that captured our imaginations in 2025.

The trends that defined audiobook listening in 2025

Listeners dove headfirst into spicy romance and romantasy, as series like Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros and A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Mass dominated Spotify’s top audiobooks list.

These fan-favorite sagas are also part of another notable trend: the power of the backlist. Nearly all of 2025’s top audiobooks were released in previous years, with listeners creating a new canon of “modern classics.” And while fiction dominated the top 10, it was a big year for music memoirs, too, as releases from artists like Mark Ronson, Mark Hoppus, and Cher struck a chord.

For the Record spoke with three members of Spotify’s global Audiobook Editorial leadership team—North America Associate Director Katie del Rosario, European Manager Roshni Radia, and Director of Audiobooks Editorial Suzanne Galvez—about what drove book culture this year.

Looking back at 2025, what trends or shifts did you see in audiobook listening on Spotify?

Katie: The biggest trends were definitely spicy romance and romantasy, which continue to dominate book culture. We’ve also seen a real surge in music memoirs, with readers loving these behind-the-scenes looks at creative lives. And book-to-screen adaptations continue to be huge for us, with big hits like The Summer I Turned Pretty and Stephen King’s The Long Walk driving renewed interest in backlist titles.

What’s especially interesting this year is increased interest in what our team calls “dystopian anxiety.” We’re seeing a spike in interest not only in classic dystopias like Fahrenheit 451, I Who Have Never Known Men, and 1984, but also in contemporary fiction and nonfiction, like Moderation and Empire of AI, that explore themes of social unrest, climate change, and emerging technologies.

What’s your take on the romantasy boom? What do you think is driving the trend?

Roshni: Romantasy is a major cultural phenomenon. Driven by communities like BookTok and authors such as Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros, the genre appeals to diverse audiences craving intense, character-driven plots, high stakes, and breathtaking romance. While historically popular with women, men now account for roughly 15% of listening in steamier subgenres, proving the desire for passion, power, and escape is universal.

Was there a single audiobook or moment this year that really popped?

Suzanne: Spotify is everywhere, which is why I love when we get to tap into moments that connect across formats in meaningful ways. From celebrating Ozzy Osbourne’s legendary life through not just his music but also books like I Am Ozzy, to pairing Tina KnowlesMatriarch with the fans of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter tour, Spotify continues to bridge culture and fandom like no one else can.

Share your predictions. What might be trending in audiobooks for 2026? Are there any emerging genres you’re keeping an eye on?

Katie: Romantasy isn’t going anywhere. There are some really big titles on the horizon, so I think 2026 is shaping up to be another blockbuster year for the genre. I also think the appetite for horror will keep growing, and that we’ll see continued growth in genre-blending fiction and in climate fiction, which tackles environmental and ecological themes in fresh, urgent ways. And I’d expect to see even more interest in books exploring AI and technology as readers look for stories that help them make sense of the world we’re moving toward.

How do you think listening on Spotify is changing the way people engage with books?

Suzanne: Spotify is blurring the lines between reading and listening, turning books into part of the same cultural ecosystem as music and podcasts. Nothing is more exciting to our editors than helping listeners connect with stories they might not have discovered otherwise. And with continued innovations like Recaps, videos, and follow-alongs, we’re expanding the experience and helping fans engage with books in a whole new rhythm.

10 Book Podcasts You Can’t Miss

Book podcasts are booming. On Spotify, you’ll find everything from celebrity book clubs to deep dives with bestselling authors. And in markets where audiobooks are available, you can listen to both the podcasts and many of the featured books all in one place. We’ve rounded up 10 of the most exciting podcasts for readers, with bonus behind-the-scenes insights from two hosts.

Beyond the page

What makes the book podcast format unique? We asked Olivia Ponton and Morgann Book to share their perspectives.

For Olivia, host of Booked & Busy, it’s about forming a close-knit, cozy community. “Starting a book-focused podcast definitely feels more niche,” she said, “but that’s honestly what I love about it! It gives me the chance to connect with my audience on such a personal level through a shared love of reading… It’s become this cozy space where listeners can hang out, unwind, make new friends, and get to know a side of me that I haven’t shared before.”

Morgann, who leads Off the Shelf, said the magic lies in having richer, more nuanced discussions that go deeper than the average review. “For me, book podcasts are unique because they let me go beyond quick reviews or aesthetic content,” Morgann explained. “I get to dig into how an author wrote their bestselling book, what was going through their brain on release day, and so much more. That long-form space lets me and my guest bring our personalities to the forefront of the conversation.”

That kind of conversation is why book podcasts have inspired passionate followers and turned reading into a vibrant shared experience.

Spotify Brings Romantasy to Life With Our Dark and Mysterious Forbid-Inn Audiobooks Experience

From enemies-to-lovers banter to star-crossed soulmates battling curses, romantasy has taken over Spotify playlists thanks to Audiobooks in Premium. Blending the heart-racing tension of romance with the magic, danger, and wonder of fantasy worlds, this unique fusion has attracted a legion of loyal listeners who can’t get enough of the genre.

“Romantasy has absolutely exploded into a cultural phenomenon, largely driven by authors like Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros. Social media—particularly the BookTok community—has definitely contributed to this conversation,” says Spotify Audiobooks Editor Katie del Rosario. “But at the core of it, we think readers are really craving a lot of what romantasy delivers: intense, character-driven plots; stakes that feel like they really matter; empowered, complex female protagonists who hold real power; and romance that takes your breath away.”

Earlier this week, romantasy fans were invited to step into the Forbid-Inn as New York’s Bowery Hotel was transformed for two days into a romantasy-themed space, immersing visitors in the magical worlds of the books they love and blurring the lines between fiction and reality.

Inside the Forbid-Inn: A celebration of magic and storytelling

During the day, fans wandered through candlelit halls, velvet-draped lounges, and enchanted nooks, each space inspired by the worlds of their favorite audiobooks. At check-in, guests received ornate room keys and a single gold token to spend on one of three whimsical quests.

Some chose Drawn by Destiny, where artists sketched fantastical portraits infused with magical details. Others opted for Written in the Cards, a romantasy-themed card-reading that revealed their romantic archetype. And for the bold, The Marking Ritual offered intricate temporary tattoos worthy of any fantasy hero.

In the evening, the inn shifted into an intimate salon where guests mingled with authors, sipped themed cocktails, and enjoyed a surprise appearance from one of the genre’s most beloved storytellers, who shared behind-the-scenes insights into their creative process.

More than just an experience, the Forbid-Inn was a celebration of the stories, the voices, and the fans who’ve made romantasy a cultural phenomenon.

Spotify Delivers Growth for the Publishing Industry: Audiobooks Sales Continue to Grow

Since Audiobooks in Premium launched on Spotify in 2023, we’ve seen strong growth all around, with our catalog of English-language audiobooks nearly tripling in size to more than 400,000 titles.

And the number of audiobooks listeners and listening hours increased by more than 30% and 35% year-over-year, respectively, in the U.S., U.K., and Australia. More recently, since the launch of audiobooks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg last year, we’ve also seen audiobook listeners in those countries grow by a monthly average of 12%.

Much of this growth is driven by users who were listening to an audiobook for the very first time. This isn’t just (really) cool—we believe it’s playing a key role in the sales of the publishing industry overall.

A newly released survey by the Audiobook Publishers Association shows that audiobook sales grew by 13% in 2024, with 99% of the revenues generated by digital audiobooks.

More specifically, our publishing partners are seeing growth and are citing Spotify as a key contributor to that growth.

    • U.K. publisher Bloomsbury reported that audio sales during its 2025 fiscal year “grew 57 percent in part driven by our new commercial relationship with Spotify.”
    • French publisher Lagadere mentioned in its 2024 financial report that “digital sales grew significantly in the audio segment (up 38%), driven by a new partnership with Spotify.”
    • U.S. publisher HarperCollins has also said that in the fourth quarter of 2024, audiobook sales rose by 13% compared to Q4 2023, with parent company News Corp pointing out our entrance into the audiobook market as a catalyst for that growth.

We want to help the industry maintain this momentum by introducing even more listeners to the world of audiobooks. And we’ll do that by continuing to provide the best experience for authors, publishers, and listeners alike. So far, we’ve done this by:

Audiobooks have the power to transform the way stories are told and enjoyed, and we’re proud to be at the forefront of this revolution.

The Service95 Book Club With Dua Lipa podcast will feature both brand-new interviews with authors of Dua’s monthly reads and a treasure trove of conversations from the Service95 archives.

“For me, one of the best things about reading is getting to chat with my friends about the book that’s just blown my mind,” said Dua. “But surely the ultimate fantasy would be to have the author in the room there with us, answering all our questions about the incredible world they’ve created. Well, I get to live out my fantasy with the Service95 Book Club podcast, where in each episode I share a book I love and I’m joined by the author themselves. As someone who really is obsessed with books, it’s a dream come true.”

To celebrate the launch, here are a few of Dua’s summer 2025 book picks:

  • This House of Grief by Helen Garner: “It wouldn’t be my book pile without at least one harrowing story. [This is] a nonfiction account of a case that follows an accused father driving his car into a dam with his three sons in the back. I couldn’t put it down.”
  • Dream Count by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: “This has been in my TBR [to-be-read] pile for a while and I can’t wait to have time to read it this summer.”

As the world’s most popular audio-streaming subscription service, Spotify is committed to expanding the audiobook industry, enabling more listeners than ever to discover and engage, and paving the way for future innovation.

We saw early adoption of podcasts and audiobooks in Germany, with labels and fans embracing both formats. Recognizing this potential, we spoke to our users and began innovating and building podcasts globally.
