Spotify’s Intentions Around ‘Gender-Inclusive Language’ on Our Platform in Germany

At Spotify, we work to amplify those who aren’t traditionally represented in audio media—whether that’s uplifting women as songwriters, producers, editors, and sound engineers in music; making accessible to people of color podcasts that resonate with them; or enabling LGBTQ+ individuals to hear queer stories reflected in their favorite music. But there’s another vitally important element of representation: language. 

Language—and our understanding of it—is constantly evolving, and in Germany, there’s been a movement in more recent years to help move away from the gender binaries within the language to provide room for inclusivity and diversity within existing words and grammar. This is called “gender-inclusive language” or “gender-responsible language.” 

“Gender-responsible language as we see it on Spotify means using and deploying language that addresses all genders or identities in an equally visible and appreciative manner,” says Michael Krause, General Manager Europe, Spotify. “It refers to language use which, with regard to personal designations, aims at the equal treatment of women, men, and, moreover, people of all genders, and wants to express gender equality in spoken and written language.”

In some languages (like Spanish, German, and French, to name just a handful), grammar is more clearly gendered. In languages where this is the case, the grammar used for individuals’ professions defaults to the masculine. So imagine opening up the Spotify app and seeing the word “artist” but knowing that the way it’s written actually refers to “male artist.” If there’s a female artist, a variation of the word would be used. For some of our listeners, including women, trans, and non-binary individuals, this meant their identity was rarely reflected while scrolling through our app. 

German-language speakers who want to utilize gender-responsible language can pay attention to using gender-neutral formulations and avoid using the generic masculine as default. In Germany, individuals and organizations have started to address this in a few ways. And as of January 2020, Spotify has decided to use an asterisk (*) to denote gender on the Spotify app in Germany. We chose this because it best explicitly addresses people who do not want to or cannot identify as male or female. 

So, for example, instead of the masculine word Künstler (artist), German Spotify listeners see Künstler*innen. Now we use this convention not only on our platform and in-app, but also in all our communications materials and on social media. And our spokespeople also use it, to the best of their abilities, in spoken-word content we engage in—such as in interviews, panels, or podcasts—by verbally stressing the word ending.

Although this language doesn’t capture every intricacy of identity, it’s a big step in the direction toward inclusivity and representation on our platform. 

Gender-responsible language is important to us in Germany because language shapes our consciousness and our thinking,” says Michael. “Language is constantly evolving, and many new words are adopted as a matter of course. We believe that this is also possible with gender-responsible language. By using gender-responsible language, we raise awareness of this issue in Germany and support people in gradually incorporating these changes into their own day-to-day life.”

Popular German Podcast ‘Talk-O-Mat’ Brings Its Unique Format to the U.S. With ‘Can We Be Friends?’

What happens when you put two unprepared celebrity strangers in a room together and ask them to talk about random topics? The result is great entertainment—and a lot of surprising moments.

This concept is the premise behind Talk-O-Mat, a popular German Spotify Original podcast. In each episode, two celebrities arrive at a studio without any idea of whom they will be talking to or what questions they will be asked. The discussion topics are randomly determined by an artificial intelligence system named Talk-O-Mat. 

The unique format of the show made it a hit with listeners in Germany, and the podcast is set to kick off its fifth season in June. And recently, the series saw such success that a new version of the podcast called Can We Be Friends? just launched in the U.S. The English version involves blindfolds for the guests and a friendly AI system who goes by Ruby. Some unexpected pairings that listeners will find for season one include Chelsea Handler and Bobby Berk, Ray-J and Tabitha Brown, and Margaret Cho and Adam Rippon. In this version of the podcast, the conversation between the celebs is analyzed by Ruby, and she ultimately determines if the duo would make for suitable friends outside of the studio.

To dig into this creative and unlikely podcast format, For the Record interviewed the man behind the original German concept, Daniel K. Nikolaou. Daniel is an executive producer at Spotify and the cocreator of the Talk-O-Mat series. What’s it been like for him to see the show flourish and expand beyond the German border? Learn that, and more, below.

How did you come up with this unique format for a podcast?

Spotify is in such a unique position to tell artist stories and shed light on creators in a new way—especially with podcasts. When we created Talk-O-Mat back in 2017, that idea was at the center of the show development. We really wanted to create something that helped fans connect with the artists they love in a different way and allow them to get to know another side of them, a side that they don’t get to show on TV or on social media. 

Why do you think this podcast format is so interesting and engaging for listeners?

I believe that what makes the show so exciting is that listeners really feel the thrill of the artists that are in the studio. You can almost literally hear the tension in the room. It’s such an exciting moment and encounter for the listeners, the artists, and the creators.

You’re about to embark on season 5. How has the show changed or evolved over the past 50+ episodes?

I’ve always found the more unlikely pairings the most fun. Hearing how two people who at first sight might not have that much in common and then witnessing how they do start to connect is always special to me. We also definitely learned a lot about the way people connect with each other, more specifically, what kind of topics or questions make them connect faster or on a deeper level. A secret that I’m not ready to reveal yet…

Do you have a favorite episode/celeb pairing from a past episode?

One of my favorite episodes is the one featuring Fynn Kliemann and Chilly Gonzales because Fynn is such a big fan of Chilly and was completely blown away. I also still love our very first episode with rapper Maeckes and model Micaela Schäfer. It was such a quirky pairing, and the birth of a very dumb running joke that led to a lot of celebrities talking about yogurt in countless episodes.

This show is now being adapted into an English version for U.S. audiences as Can We Be Friends? What was your reaction when you heard the news? 

I couldn’t be prouder! I’ve always believed that the concept of the show had potential for other markets because it’s so pure and fresh. I’m very excited to see how the U.S. audience responds to it! 

What are some opportunities for this show format now that it’s being brought to a new market and audience? 

I’m very excited to see original audio intellectual property not only traveling from the U.S. to other markets, as it is with most content and media, but the other way around. I think that the cross-border adaptation of audio IP to local cultures will open a lot of new creative opportunities and pathways for the future.

Germany Takes Podcasting to a New Level With a New Podcast Parodying… Podcasts

Germany is one of the most mature markets for podcasting, with a culture that has been attuned to audio for decades. So Spotify has been active in the market, churning out Spotify Original and Exclusive podcasts for several years—while watching the format grow and mature. The growth and longevity have enabled us to experiment with unique talents, formats, and trends. 

The newest Spotify original podcast in Germany, Podcasts der Podcast (Podcasts — the Podcast) plays on that maturity with a brand-new format. The show parodies existing podcasts, hosts, and the medium as a whole, much like TV shows and movies already do globally. The podcast serves as a touching yet hilarious love letter to the evolving, important medium. 

We talked to Saruul Krause-Jentsch, Head of Studios, Germany, to better understand why Germany’s listeners were ready for this satirical format, what it means for the future of podcasting, and why she’s excited to tune in.

We previously learned from Managing Director Michael Krause that Germany is a mature podcast market. How does that influence the types of podcasts that come out of Germany?

The first Spotify Exclusive podcast, Fest & Flauschig, came out of Germany in April 2016. So we’ve had five years of experience in Germany around podcast production since then. We understand our core podcast audience very well and have launched over 40 other successful German shows across comedy, entertainment, and relationships. Our most successful podcasts continue to be comedy and entertainment, but we’re constantly evolving into new formats and genres, like documentaries, fiction, and daily news. For example, our six daily formats have gained a lot of traction and are positioned at the top of the chart rankings in the region. 

All of this sets us up to be innovative, and now we want to grow and learn further with a more satirical podcast show like Podcasts — der Podcast. 

Two New German Spotify Original Podcasts Are Taking On Marriage—One Before and One After Saying ‘I Do’

From rom-com meet-cutes to tailored playlist exchanges, there’s a lot to love about love. Two new German Spotify Original podcasts are ready to bring their take on relationships, but from two different vantage points: One podcast follows a couple’s journey before saying “I do,” while the other takes a look at newlywed life.

First up, the before. While a wedding is often one of the most memorable days in a couple’s life, planning the event is often more stressful than blissful. So Laura Larsson, cohost of the popular show Herrengedeck, decided to document her lead-up to the altar in her new podcast Erstmal für immer. In the 10-episode series, she gives the audience an open and honest look at preparations for her wedding to her fiancé, Nils. “My favorite part of creating the show was talking to Nils,” explains Laura. “In our recordings together, I felt like I got to know a lot of new things about both him and us.” From the proposal to the walk down the aisle, listeners will follow the bride-to-be through the highs and lows of her entire planning process. Laura isn’t sparing any details. As she explains it, you can expect the journey to be “chaotic and emotional, but also quite beautiful.”

And when it comes to life after the vows? German comedians Hazel Brugger and Thomas Spitzer chronicle what happens next on their podcast Nur verheiratet mit Hazel & Thomas. After keeping their marriage a secret from the public for months, Hazel and Thomas give listeners a glimpse into their relationship, one date at a time. Over 17 episodes, the series lets listeners eavesdrop on the couple as they handle their marriage “firsts,” and learn what it’s like to date each other again.

Enissa Amani Explores Culture and Comedy in Her New Spotify Original Podcast

Enissa Amani is a chameleon onstage. The Iranian-born German comedian prides herself on the ability to bend and transform her material for any audience based on location, language, and culture. Now she’s also working this flexibility into a new medium for her debut German-language Spotify Original Podcast, Statements aus Seide (“Statements Made of Silk”). Like her on-stage comedy, Enissa’s new show will cover a range of topics from feminism to fashion. “I want to share the moments which all mankind has in common: the pain, the fears, the desires,” says Enissa.

As the first German comedian with a stand-up special on Netflix, she’s honed her craft—expect plenty of laughs. But in Statements aus Seide, Enissa will also share thoughtful deliberations on her life growing up as an Iranian refugee in Germany, her work as a social justice advocate, and whatever else is on her mind—all in 30- to 60-minute episodes.

Enissa spoke with For the Record about performing in different languages, her activism work, and creating her own podcast.

What can fans of your comedy stand-up expect from the podcast?

In my podcast I’ll touch upon all the issues I have not yet touched upon onstage. I’ve told my stories a few times when I was a guest on other podcasts, and the feedback was tremendous. People who hadn’t even followed my work told me that my point of view was extremely helpful to them.

Over the years, I wrote down every story of my family, my friends, and book quotes which inspired me. Those words can offer people a real way out of hopeless moments. This will be a funny podcast—an honest hour to let you begin or end your day with a smile. 

How has your background as an Iranian immigrant informed your comedy?

Being an Iranian refugee child and being trilingual helps me to approach people on different cultural levels. And every time I perform, I am a different kind of Enissa. The Berlin Show Enissa is a much rougher comic than the LA, Hollywood, Laugh Factory Enissa, who is more into the German-Persian Background Stories. The New York Enissa is much cooler than the Farsi show in Vienna, where Iranians are just starting to get into stand-up.

I get to taste all these different moments of laughter and try very different stand-up materials. 

As refugees, or “first-generation Germans,” we are torn apart between identities, but every kind of conflict always helps with comedy. 

What’s your life been like since your Netflix special premiered?

My specials changed my work. I started playing shows in three languages. I had the honor to have stage time at the Laugh Factory in LA, and the Improv, the Gotham, and the Comedy Cellar in New York. All stages I had never dreamed I’d be able to perform in a language which is not my first. I also play Farsi shows in Germany, Austria, and the UK. 

You’re not afraid to share your opinions on issues like racism and inequality. How did comedy become an outlet for you to share these thoughts? 

I’m really surprised that my activism for human rights and against racism here in Germany kind of got bigger than my work as a comedian. In the beginning, everybody told me to “stick with comedy” whenever I was outspoken about problems in our society. Now all my statements go viral with 12,000 comments sometimes, and everybody asks me to seriously get into politics. There is this running gag of my followers calling me “the chancellor.”

I love the fact that everything that your heart tells you to do—if you have the courage to follow that voice—becomes your real vocation or even destiny. 

What would you like people to take away from your podcast? 

I’m going to share my most intimate stories, experiences, and inspirations on my podcast because I know it will help through dark times. Every smile you can inspire is a smile you‘ll create for the world.

Apache 207, Juju, Summer Cem, and More Headline Live Modus Mio Concert

For the second year in a row, hip-hop fans in Germany had the opportunity to witness a favorite Spotify playlist, Modus Mio, come to life on the big stage.

In honor of the playlist—which has over 1.3 million followers—Spotify brought some of the biggest names in the German hip-hop game to the Warsteiner Music Hall in Dortmund on December 14. For the second annual “Modus Mio Live On Stage,” artists including Kreuzberg phenomenon Ufo361, Juju, Summer Cem, Azet, KALIM, and Apache 207 performed many of their chart-topping hits for an über-enthusiastic crowd.

‘Das allerletzte Interview’: Mörderische Spannung in der Podcast-Fortsetzung

Hip-Hop-Journalistin Clara plant, den erfolgreichsten Rapper Deutschlands zu töten. Aber warum? Das Rätsel hinter Claras Motiv sowie ihre düstere Vergangenheit haben im vergangenen Sommer Podcast- und Krimi-Fans in Atem gehalten.
