KickFlip Take on Tricky Translations in ‘Flip the Language’

"Flip the Language" Podcast Art cover, featuring members of KickFlip on a black, patterned background.

An expression may be easy to use in one language, but nearly impossible to explain in another. That’s the challenge at the heart of Flip the Language, a new video podcast on Spotify. Across four weekly episodes, K-Pop boy group KickFlip explores Korean slang, memes, and everyday phrases that don’t quite translate word for word.

Working in rotating units, the members bring each expression to life in conversations inspired by their personalities and real-life stories. Then, with one member stepping in as their language tutor, they search for the closest English and Japanese equivalent and put it to the test. Along the way, their conversations and challenges reveal how much humor and cultural nuance can be packed into a single phrase.

For the Record caught up with KickFlip to talk about the fun of getting lost (and found) in translation, bringing their chemistry to the screen, and what fans can look forward to learning alongside them.

Korean is full of expressions that feel impossible to explain in another language. What made you want to take on that challenge now with Flip the Language?

KickFlip: There are so many Korean expressions that we use naturally every day, but when we try to explain them in another language, we realize how difficult it is to capture the exact feeling or nuance behind them. Since we have both Korean and Japanese members and communicate with fans all over the world, we thought it would be fun to explore those differences together. Rather than simply translating each expression, we wanted to show how it is actually used through conversations and role-playing, and then find the closest natural way to express that same feeling in English or Japanese.

Did you uncover anything surprising about each other during filming?

Kyehoon: I realized that Keiju was much better at Japanese than I expected! I was surprised by how well he understood and used Japanese.

Donghwa: I was really grateful to Keiju because he explained Japanese so clearly. He was a really good teacher!

Juwang: I was surprised by how good Minje was at English. He was even better than I expected!

Minje: Keiju was really good at teaching us Japanese, and I especially enjoyed the way he would use funny tones and act out different situations. Those moments made it even more fun.

Keiju: I think I realized that I’m actually pretty good at teaching, just like a real teacher! Teacher Keiju is the best!

Donghyeon: I was impressed by how Keiju, when he was the teacher, didn’t just follow the script but added his own lines while leading the conversation. That really stood out to me.

With Flip the Language, fans now have a whole new way to spend time with you. What does it mean to you to have this show on Spotify?

KickFlip: We’re excited to connect with fans through a format that feels different from our music and performances. A video podcast gives us more time to talk, react to each other, and show our natural chemistry, while also learning something together. We hope fans can feel like they’re part of the conversation with us: laughing at the same moments, learning new expressions, and getting to know us a little better along the way.

What do you hope fans, or those who might be discovering your group for the first time, take away from watching it?

Kyehoon: I hope people discover that KickFlip is actually a very playful group. When we’re together, we joke around a lot and we’re much more relaxed and honest with each other. And for me personally, because I’m the leader, I might seem serious sometimes, but I hope fans discover that I can actually be a little clumsy and I really love joking around.

Donghwa: I hope fans get to see a more serious side of me through the show.

Juwang: I hope viewers realize that learning a language can be fun.

Minje: I hope fans notice my English skills and my funny way of speaking during the show.

Keiju: I hope fans discover that I have some hosting skills! I also hope they notice how much my Korean has improved. And I think Minje once again showed how good he is at English!

Donghyeon: I hope WeFlip can see how quickly I pick things up and maybe even find that side of me a little sexy!

To wrap things up: is there a phrase you’d like to teach your fans that might not make sense when directly translated to another language?

Kyehoon: I’d like to introduce “눈치 없다” (nunchi eopda). It’s difficult to translate directly, but we use it when someone isn’t very good at reading the room or picking up on how another person is feeling. Between close friends, we also use it playfully, like “너 진짜 눈치 없다!”—something like, “You really can’t take a hint!”

Donghwa: I’d choose “꿀꿀하다” (kkulkkulhada). We use it when we’re feeling a little down or when our mood just feels a bit off. It describes that slightly gloomy or unsettled feeling that’s difficult to translate exactly.

Juwang: I’d choose “알잘딱깔센” (al-jal-ttak-kkal-sen). It’s short for “알아서 잘 딱 깔끔하고 센스 있게,” which basically means to understand what needs to be done and handle it well, neatly and with good sense.

Minje: I have three expressions I’d like to introduce! First, “야무지다” (yamujida). I use it when a meal is put together perfectly—when everything on the table goes really well together. Second, “낄끼빠빠” (kkil-kki-ppa-ppa). It means “Know when to join in and when to step back.” It’s about reading the situation and knowing when to get involved and when not to. And lastly, “맛꿀마” (mat-kkul-ma). It’s something you can say when the food is really, really good!

Keiju: Since I’m Japanese, I’d like to introduce a Japanese expression: “エモい” (emoi). It comes from “emotional” and is used when something gives you a strong emotional feeling or has a special emotional vibe.

Donghyeon: I’d choose “묘하다” (myohada). We use it when a situation or feeling is somehow strange or ambiguous, but it’s difficult to explain exactly why. For example, you might say, “아, 기분이 조금 묘하네…” Something like, “Hmm… I feel kind of strange,” but the Korean expression has a subtle feeling that’s difficult to capture exactly in English.

NCT’s JOHNNY Invites Fans to Explore Korean Culture in ‘Journey with Johnny’

NCT's JOHNNY poses behind the title "Journey with JOHNNY". Johnny's podcast in partnership with Spotify.

NCT’s JOHNNY was born and raised in Chicago, but moved to South Korea as a teenager to train as an artist. Years later, he’s still discovering new things about his adopted home every day. Now he’s inviting fans to explore Korean culture alongside him with JOURNEY with JOHNNY, a new video podcast available now on Spotify.

The show brings together personal stories and conversations about Korean customs and culture. Each episode also features a song handpicked by Johnny, connecting the conversation to music and moments from his everyday life.

For the Record caught up with Johnny to talk about these unexpected discoveries, music’s power to connect people, and why he hopes listeners leave each episode feeling warm and cozy.

What inspired you to start JOURNEY with JOHNNY, and what made this the right moment to bring it to life?

I’ve always thought it would be great to have more ways to talk and connect with fans around the world. So when this opportunity came up, I was excited to take it. The timing also felt right because, after spending many years in Korea, I feel like I’m now at a point where I can really put my experiences into words and share them in a more personal way.

Was there anything that surprised you when you were recording the show?

While filming, I actually caught myself being surprised quite a lot. There were so many things about Korea that I realized I still didn’t know, but also things that I didn’t realize I did know. Those little moments of discovery and realization will really be the key highlights. I really hope K-pop fans and anyone who’s curious about Korean culture can experience Korea alongside me. I’m still learning and discovering things too, so it really does feel like we’re going on this journey together.

Why was it important to you to make music a part of every episode?

JOURNEY with JOHNNY is on Spotify, so how could I not have music? [Laughs.] I thought of it as an opportunity not only to share some of my own taste, but also to really dive into music together with the listeners—what fans want to hear, what songs are trending right now, why I think those songs are popular. A lot of people tuning into the podcast probably discovered me through listening to K-pop in the first place. Music has always had this incredible ability to connect and find unity around the world.

With the podcast, NCTzens now have a new way to engage with you. What does it mean to you to have that kind of space, and how do you hope this show sits alongside your work in NCT?

I hope JOURNEY with JOHNNY can become a space that spreads positivity. Meeting fans throughout the years has taught me how much not only our music, but our personal experiences can give them strength. I think it will give people another way to get to know me, which hopefully also makes them curious about NCT, too. And if someone listens to the podcast without knowing NCT yet…I might have to make it my personal mission to change that. [Laughs.]

If you had to sum up the vibe of JOURNEY with JOHNNY in three words, what would they be?

Personal, relaxed, playful.

What are your biggest hopes for JOURNEY with JOHNNY?

Just like the name suggests, I want this podcast to feel like a journey—for me and for everyone listening. I hope listeners can simply have a good time with it. The goal for me would be for listeners to feel warm and cozy. And, hopefully, we can keep this journey going for a long time.

K-Pop Artist ENHYPEN Host ‘The Blood Diary,’ a New Video Podcast Series From HYBE

Like the immortal lives of vampires, some stories never really end. That’s the vibe K-Pop boyband ENHYPEN brings to The Blood Diary, a new video podcast series that explores mysterious events from around the globe, where members of the group take turns blurring the line between fact and fiction.

Throughout each episode, members of ENHYPEN take turns recounting stories while attempting to uncover the hidden “liar.” Fans (aka ENGENE) are encouraged to follow along, piecing together clues and deciding for themselves which story isn’t what it seems.

Created by HYBE MEDIA STUDIO and brought to fans in partnership with Spotify, The Blood Diary is the first from STAN:A, a new video podcast show that brings fans closer to artists they love through candid conversations and original storytelling.

The first episode of The Blood Diary is out now on Spotify, and new episodes will drop biweekly every Friday at 8PM KST.

To step further inside the mystery, For the Record spoke with the first hosts of The Blood Diary—ENHYPEN’s JUNGWON, JAY, JAKE, and SUNOO—about what it was like to work on the series, the stories they chose to tell, and what fans can expect as the series pulls them into its thrall.

The Blood Diary features you all as immortal vampires sharing mysterious records on the night of a full moon. What was it like stepping into these roles?

JUNGWON: It was cool and fun how each member came ready with a story and shared it. When I was telling my story, I got so immersed that it became a little scary. I hope this vibe comes across well to ENGENE and that they really enjoy it.

JAY: It was a new concept that we had never tried before, but I found myself completely immersed in the story, maybe thanks to the atmosphere on set. Telling a story as a vampire was already fun, but the best part was watching the members suspect each other and trying to find the Blood Liar.

JAKE: I was so happy that we were able to show a new side of ourselves to ENGENE. This vampire concept is something only ENHYPEN can pull off, don’t you think? Combining a concept that only we can handle with storytelling is really going to make for an even more fun video podcast.

SUNOO: Telling stories as a vampire was fun, but it was even more exciting to watch and listen to the other members share theirs. I actually think I got more nervous listening to the other members’ stories than when I was telling my own. I found myself completely absorbed the whole time.

The tagline of the show is “The Mystery Records of Immortal Vampires.” Without giving too much away, what kind of “bizarre events” can fans expect to hear about in your diaries?

JAY: Stories from the past that feel even more fantastical than fantasy, and strange incidents hidden behind everyday life. We’ll be sharing scary stories that are even harder to believe because they actually happened in real life.

A highlight of each episode is the “Blood Liar” game, where one member weaves fiction into their story to deceive the others. Before you went into production, did you already have suspicions on who the best “Blood Liar” would be?

JUNGWON: JAY is pretty good at lying. So if he’s the “Blood Liar,” I think he’ll be very good at deceiving the rest of the members.

JAY: When it comes to “liar,” you’ve got to think of JAKE! He once made plans to meet me, but then totally flaked. That’s when I realized that he really is a liar.

JAKE: We’d never done a concept that involved deceiving each other before, so it was hard to predict. But somehow… I thought that JAY might be the best “Blood Liar.”

SUNOO: Before the shoot, I was trying to guess who it might be… and I had a feeling it would probably be JAY!

Every day on Spotify, we see how audio has the power to move and resonate with people in a deeply personal way. How did the specific sound design and atmosphere of The Blood Diary help you get into character and bring these mysteries to life?

SUNOO: Watching the final edit of the video podcast with all the sound effects, I was completely drawn in by how realistic it felt. Thanks to the sound design, I think ENGENE will experience thrills and feel curious in ways they normally wouldn’t while watching the podcast. I highly recommend that everyone fully dive into The Blood Diary.

What are your biggest hopes for The Blood Diary?

JUNGWON: Until now, we’ve mostly appeared on lighthearted, fun variety shows, but with The Blood Diary, we’re looking forward to showing a heavier, more serious side of ENHYPEN that fans haven’t seen before.

Anything else to add about the making of the podcast or reflections you have now that the first episode is out?

JAKE: I filmed a lot with JAY, and I got a huge kick out of seeing him get scared while listening to the stories. It was also really fun preparing a new story for each episode and sharing it directly with the members. I’m also really looking forward to all the different stories the other members will bring in future episodes. I hope ENGENE enjoys it as much as we did.

JAY: Spotify is an essential part of my daily life, so I’m thrilled to be a host for this video podcast! The Blood Diary covers a variety of real-life incidents, so I think viewers will get to experience a more authentic thrill. It’s definitely worth looking forward to.

JUNGWON: I use Spotify all the time, so I’m really happy to be a host for a Spotify video podcast. I hope ENGENE will see many different sides of us through The Blood Diary. Please look forward to it.

SUNOO: When I was filming the episode where I was the “Blood Liar,” I had to deceive the other members, constantly insisting, “It’s true! I’m not lying!” which was really tough. But as I watched the others gradually fall for my story, I started to enjoy it. I’m not sure when the episode where I play the “Blood Liar” will be released, but I hope you all look forward to it!

“Our lead single ‘Bad Desire (With or Without You)’ expresses an overpowering desire to turn you into a vampire,” explained SUNOO. “It’s a pop song with a sleek, chic mood. One of the key lines is, ‘A heaven without you must be like hell, but hell where I embrace you must be like heaven.’ Beyond the paradoxical lyrics, the song also reflects our own emotions, our desire to stay connected with ENGENEs.”

Added member HEESEUNG: “We’ve been collaborating with Spotify on a variety of projects. So it’s such an honor and joy to be working with Spotify again for MAISON ENHYPEN in celebration of the release of DESIRE : UNLEASH. I hope many ENGENES enjoy the event!”

Six Playlists To Get Your Dance on From South Korea’s 1MILLION Dance Studio

Based in Seoul, South Korea, 1MILLION Dance Studio originally started in a basement in 2014. It has since grown in both size and cultural significance, welcoming students from all over the world, establishing itself as one of South Korea’s most-prized dance agencies, and representing some of the top dancers and choreographers in Asia and around the globe.

1MILLION’s dancers have collaborated with companies; choreographed routines for superstars; and appeared in numerous music videos, concerts, and television shows. Its frequently updated YouTube channel has over 25 million subscribers worldwide to date, and now the famed studio is ready to connect with fans on Spotify.

To celebrate the launch of the official 1MILLION Dance Studio Spotify account, the world-renowned studio has created 1MILLION!—a special playlist consisting of fan-favorite tracks that have appeared in its videos. Tracks include “The Greatest” by Sia, “bloodline” by Ariana Grande, “SUNDOWN (ft. Justin Bieber)” by BEAM, and more.

But 1MILLION Dance wasn’t content to leave fans with just the one playlist. The studio also tapped five of its brightest stars—Yoojung Lee, Bale, Woonha, KOOJAEMO, and K-Chan—to create their own specially themed playlists to help fans get warmed up, cooled off, and in a relaxed state of mind.

Curious which tracks these top dancers keep on repeat? Let’s find out.

Yoojung Lee

Yoojung joined the ranks of the 1MDS elite in 2015. She became interested in dance at the age of 16 and went on to immerse herself in everything related, starting with commercial dance and moving on to other genres including street-dance fundamentals.

With her Mystery Party playlist, Yoojung shares some of her favorite daily warm-up songs, which include tracks from Shawn Mendes, BIBI, and more.

Bale

Known for winning first place in Asia’s most prestigious dance competition, the Feedback Competition, Bale has been dancing since he first learned how to pop at the age of 15. He’s gone on to participate in countless competitions and dance battles and joined 1MDS in 2020.

Before class or practice, Bale likes to listen to his playlist Relax, Warm-Up, which includes hits from Khalid, Daniel Caesar, and Jeff Bernat.

Woonha

Known for her dark and gothic style of choreography, Woonha began dancing as part of her high school’s junior dance club. She later passed an audition and was invited to perform with 1MILLION Dance, which led to her officially becoming a choreographer at the academy in 2019.

With selections from Mura Masa and FKA twigs, Woonha’s Low Wave playlist is equally suited for relaxing before or after dance class.

KOOJAEMO

Appearing in countless music videos including Solar’s “HONEY,” NCT U’s “Maniac,” AleXa’s “Xtra,” and “Blue Moon” by kyungri, KOOJAEMO is one of the rising street dancers in South Korea.

Before a 1MILLION Dance class, you need to get pumped. And KOOJAEMO’s playlist All That Hip does just that, with cuts by Ari Lennox, UMI, and Sam Smith.

K-Chan

While having famously appeared in SUNYE’s “Just a Dancer” music video, K-Chan is a rookie in the dance scene. He notably choreographed for K-Pop artist Hong Eunki and former BESTie member Jung Yu Ji on the hit competition show Sing Again 2 and appeared in Korea Tourism’s famous “Feel the Rhythm of Korea: SEOUL” ad, which has garnered over 48 million views to date.

Get your groove on with Burna Boy, Omah Lay, and more with K-Chan’s Feel Groovy playlist.

1MILLION aims to break the barrier between dance professionals and enthusiasts to create a dance culture that is accessible to all. And now that it’s officially on Spotify, fans will have a chance to stay up with all the tracks that inspire their favorite dancers.

Want to keep the dance party going? Turn ON the movement with Spotify’s K-Pop On! playlist!
