Spotify and Delta Travel Across Cultures and Continents in the Passport Sessions Series

Frequent flyers already know some of the melodic perks that come with Spotify’s Delta partnership. Travelers have in-flight access to Spotify’s This Is… mixtape series and easy perusing of the Kids & Family hub  on Delta’s industry leading seatback entertainment. Now, the Spotify x Delta partnership is expanding with a new social docu-series, The Passport Sessions

Available for passengers to watch for free in-flight, The Passport Sessions showcase how artists and their music can influence cultures on the other side of the world. In each episode, two songwriters, producers, or artists will travel to a twin city—locations that share similar cultural and historical identities—and will be hosted by two local artists. The episodes will follow the creators on their journeys as they write and record music, and explore the destination’s food, culture, and history.

“Music has a powerful way of uniting people, whether through shared musical tastes, influences, favorite artists, or culture,” shared Enrique Marquez Paris, Songwriter and Publishing Relations Manager at Spotify. “By bringing together emerging artists, songwriters, and producers from different parts of the world, The Passport Sessions give a rare glimpse into the songwriting process, showing firsthand how music and travel can inspire new connections and, ultimately, new art.”

We’re kicking off the series with “From Miami to Medellín,” which features Andy Clay and maye taking off from Florida and touching down in Colombia to meet and collaborate with Juan Duque and Aria Vega.

So what was the experience like? Aria, maye, and Andy share details.

How did your culture influence the song that you created during the inaugural Spotify Passport Sessions song camp?

maye: I’d like to think that we each added our own flavor to the song. It was definitely a challenge to make this song and see how all of our influences coexisted.

Aria: The language and expressions used in the song are a real part of how we express ourselves in Colombia. Afrobeats are also really popular on the Caribbean coast, so it was cool to have a little bit of influence from that.

Andy: The song we did was a perfect mix of the different flavors of all the writers and producers involved in the creative process. A little bit of afro, urbano, and pop defines the musical essence of our song.

What did you learn about yourself from this experience? What did you learn from your collaborators?

maye: I learned how to go with the flow and allow the song to unfold. From my collaborators, it was inspiring to see how everyone came up with ideas on the spot.

Aria: I learned to step out of my comfort zone. I usually work with two producers that know me and my taste in music so well that I don’t have to communicate what I like and don’t like. I also rarely work with songwriters. It was nice to meet and communicate with other people and learn from their talent, culture, and artistry. I also learned how they perceive a song from their artistry. That sounds simple, but it’s a whole world of melodies, harmonies, language, expressions, culture—it’s a lot.

Andy: I learned about the incredible music Aria and Juan are doing. I was already aware of the incredible job maye was doing with her project. I really enjoyed having three artists who were so different but at the same time so connected with the same energy, while writing our song.

How does travel impact both production choices and the songs you write?

maye: Traveling is a way to keep me inspired by absorbing whatever culture, sights, and traditions the place has to offer.

Aria: Travel impacts the songs I write because getting to know new places, their traditions, foods, their way of speaking, and overall culture is really inspiring.

Andy: It has a great impact. Being in a different city with different weather, food, and musical influences give you another perspective on what we do!

Upgrade Your Travel With Our New Delta Experience

A man and a woman boarding a delta flight

Spotify and Delta are ready to make your next flight soar. In the past, we’ve shared exciting perks that come with the partnership between your favorite audio streaming service and airline. Now we’re taking these benefits to new heights.

We’re putting our own spin on the boarding process by curating the music that plays as you find your seat. The playlist will update monthly to include Delta customers’ favorites, so even frequent flyers will experience a fresh music rotation.

Before you recline your seat, take a look at the new music playlists featured in the seatback entertainment. Part of these offerings is our This is mixtape series, including The Weeknd’s mixtape, This is The Weeknd. We will continue to add artist “This is” mixtapes from a variety of genres, giving every traveler something to enjoy.

If you’re traveling with kiddos, you’ll want to check out three new podcasts available on Spotify’s Kids & Family hub in the Delta seatback entertainment. For the first time ever, Spotify will be taking over the audio section of the Delta Sky Kids hub with the podcasts Deep Blue Sea, Gardenkeeper Gus, and 100 Cinderellas: Bedtime Stories From Around The World—and keeping the family enthralled from wheels up to touchdown.

And beginning this December, Spotify’s longest-running original content series, Spotify Singles, will appear on Delta flights wherever there’s seatback entertainment.

These new offerings are ways Spotify is hoping to improve your travel experience. Delta’s data shows that flyers frequently picked our Sleep mixtape or Relax & Unwind mixtape to soundtrack their flights. And when it comes to podcasts, storytime passes the time with Unexplained Mysteries, The Two Princes, and Mythology being the most-listened-to podcasts on flights around the globe.

Spotify and easyJet Are Helping You Listen & Book Your Next Trip

a pilot is waving out of a plane and there are graphic orange circles around him

Travel and music are best mates. In addition to a solid playlist’s making a flight fly by, they both expand the mind and encourage people to try new experiences. And now Spotify Advertising and easyJet, a leading European airline, have teamed up to help those experiencing wanderlust (but feeling a little wander-lost) find their next travel destination. With the new Listen & Book tool, listeners can find suggestions for their next Euro-vacation inspiration based specifically on the music they listen to.

Are your playlists packed with calm and dreamy tunes? Then maybe seeing the northern lights in Iceland or strolling through the botanical gardens in Lisbon is what you need. Or if your music taste tends toward the wild and rebellious, perhaps volcano skiing in Sicily or dancing the night away in Barcelona will excite you. Through this site, you’ll also get info on local concert venues so you can experience the music scene while you’re in town.

For the Record chatted with easyJet pilot Alexis Luneau to get a true jet-setter’s perspective when it comes to music and travel.

Is there a type of music that’s best to listen to while you travel?

I would say it really depends on the context. If I catch an early morning flight, I might enjoy a chill and relaxing playlist to get my mood rightly set for taking off into the travel day. But if the mood has already been set to a nice and friendly ambiance—when traveling with a group, for instance—I’m keen to find a playlist that will bring up good memories for everyone, as we are about to create some new ones.

When gearing up for a trip, do you like to make your own playlists, or do you listen to existing Spotify playlists?

I actually do both! I love to create my own, but I have to admit that they are usually inspired from existing Spotify playlists or from what I hear on the radio. If I like the vibe of the song, there it goes, straight into my playlist!

After a long travel day, what type of music helps revive and reenergize your mood?

My personal mood boosters are the hits of the moment! I usually don’t need much more to get started and ready for new adventures.

If someone finds flying stressful, what music might be best for listening to so they can relax?

I found a great playlist on Spotify called Electro Chill. I love to listen to it when I need to relax and cool down, and I’m sure it can be a fantastic remedy for someone who finds flying stressful! However, the best way to beat that is still to get a window seat and enjoy the view, taking advantage of the few hours of absence from the earth’s surface and remembering how lucky we are to be in the sky.

What are some songs that are keeping you soaring this summer?

If I have to sum up my summer in three songs, I would say:

As a pilot, you get the chance to visit so many countries, all of which have their own versatile music styles. Which country (or countries) stand out to you when it comes to music?

I love heading to Sweden, as I have been a fan of ABBA since my childhood.

Landing in England, specifically London, is a great reminder of the variety of concerts and musicals that that amazing city offers.

Finally, it’s hard not to think about the good times the festivalgoers are having at Tomorrowland when I fly over Belgium in July.

Spotify and easyJet’s new Listen & Book website helps inspire people by suggesting cities based on their musical tastes. What were your results?

My results were Palma De Mallorca, Milano, and Copenhagen. I was surprised at how accurate they are with matching my personality and taste to travel destinations!

Where’s somewhere you haven’t gone yet but would love to experience?

Costa Rica is definitely on my bucket list! The mix of Caribbean versus Pacific ambiance with a touch of Central American vibe is something I am looking forward to discovering—hopefully on my next trip.

Are you feeling that wanderlust yet? Visit the Listen & Book tool for yourself to get inspiration for your next journey.

  • Learn the local language: Whether you’re fluent or don’t know a single word, Spotify’s Lyrics feature can help you explore the music and language of your destination.

Now that you’re ready to make the most of your time off, the only thing left to do is get out there and start streaming. And if you’re looking for the right playlist to kick things off, Summer Hits is a great place to start.

Spotify Takes to the Skies With Delta For an Exclusive In-Flight Audio Experience

You are now free to roam about the cabin—and get the music and podcasts you love at 30,000 feet. Beginning today, we’re taking off in a new partnership with Delta in which Spotify will take over the “audio” section of Delta’s in-flight seatback entertainment. This means passengers on Delta flights that are equipped with seatback entertainment globally can now enjoy their favorite audio content exclusively in-flight on Delta Studio.

There are currently more than 20 million flight-related user-generated playlists globally on Spotify, and this new partnership is making it even easier for listeners to tap into their favorite audio content while flying.

This in-flight content is licensed directly by Delta and will be free for all passengers. It includes specially curated versions of Spotify’s most popular playlists—in the form of mixtapes curated by Spotify’s editorial experts—along with 42 select podcast series to choose from.

These include popular playlists Mood Booster, Are & Be, Hot Country, mint, Today’s Top Hits, Relax & Unwind, RapCaviar, and Ultimate Indie, with Rock This, Roots Rising, and ¡Viva Latino! to come in the October refresh, as well as episodes from podcasts such as Crime Junkie, Science Vs, StartUp, The Dave Chang Show, The Hottest Take, The Journal, and more.

Passengers will now be able to discover new music and podcasts during their journeys by accessing the “audio” section of Delta’s seatback in-flight entertainment system. The content will be updated regularly, so there’s something for everyone—even frequent flyers.

You can also listen to your own Spotify content while up in the air and away from Wi-Fi or data. Learn how.

How to Download and Listen to Music and Podcasts — Offline and On the Go

Sunscreen; check. Hat; check. Playlists; ready for anything—even a vacation destination without Wi-Fi.

Being completely disconnected from Wi-Fi and data—whether in an airplane or rustic cabin in the woods—doesn’t mean you need to be without your favorite music or podcasts. If you’re a Premium subscriber, it only takes a few simple steps while you’re still at home and on Wi-Fi to download your favorite content and ensure it’s available when you go off the grid or up in the air.

First, if you’d like to use Wi-Fi to download, go to Settings > Music Quality > Download Using Cellular and check that the feature is set to the default “off.” From there, it’s easy to download tracks and podcasts on your cell phone, tablet, or iPad:

  1. Search for the content you want
  2. Select the playlist, album, or podcast you want to listen to offline
  3. Switch the download toggle ON—it will turn green so you know it’s working
  4. Once tracks in your library are downloaded, you’ll see a little green arrow below each song name
  5. Connect your headphones and start listening, no matter where you are!

If you’re using Spotify on desktop, but still want to take those songs or podcast episodes with you on your mobile device:

  1. Select songs to download automatically to your device by clicking the plus symbol next to any track
  2. That plus symbol will turn into a checkmark, which means the song will sync to your phone next time it’s connected to WiFi
  3. If you’re looking to organize your downloads, now’s the time! Using your computer to organize tracks into a playlist before you go can be a bit easier

Note that if you’re seeing songs grayed out when you’re offline, it means they’re not downloaded and you won’t be able to play them without Wi-Fi. (It might be a good idea to experiment with going online before you board the plane.) To see everything you’ve downloaded on your phone, check out the “Downloads” tab under “Your Library” on mobile.

Also know that there’s a maximum to the number of songs and podcasts you can download per device. If you do hit the limit, you can always go back and remove some existing downloads.

Plus, keep in mind that in order for Premium subscribers to keep all downloads available, you’ll need to connect your phone to Wi-Fi at least once every 30 days. So if you’re on an extended hiking trip, just make sure to connect to Wi-Fi at least once per month if you want to keep streaming.

For more tips about offline listening, ask a Rock Star for assistance on our Community page.

Get excited for your upcoming trip with our Soak up the Sun playlist, or plan to catch up on the latest Lore. (And if you want to take them with you on your travels, don’t forget to download now.)
