Spotify and Delta Travel Across Cultures and Continents in the Passport Sessions Series

Frequent flyers already know some of the melodic perks that come with Spotify’s Delta partnership. Travelers have in-flight access to Spotify’s This Is… mixtape series and easy perusing of the Kids & Family hub  on Delta’s industry leading seatback entertainment. Now, the Spotify x Delta partnership is expanding with a new social docu-series, The Passport Sessions

Available for passengers to watch for free in-flight, The Passport Sessions showcase how artists and their music can influence cultures on the other side of the world. In each episode, two songwriters, producers, or artists will travel to a twin city—locations that share similar cultural and historical identities—and will be hosted by two local artists. The episodes will follow the creators on their journeys as they write and record music, and explore the destination’s food, culture, and history. 

“Music has a powerful way of uniting people, whether through shared musical tastes, influences, favorite artists, or culture,” shared Enrique Marquez Paris, Songwriter and Publishing Relations Manager at Spotify. “By bringing together emerging artists, songwriters, and producers from different parts of the world, The Passport Sessions give a rare glimpse into the songwriting process, showing firsthand how music and travel can inspire new connections and, ultimately, new art.”

We’re kicking off the series with “From Miami to Medellín,” which features Andy Clay and maye taking off from Florida and touching down in Colombia to meet and collaborate with Juan Duque and Aria Vega.

So what was the experience like? Aria, maye, and Andy share details.

How did your culture influence the song that you created during the inaugural Spotify Passport Sessions song camp?

maye: I’d like to think that we each added our own flavor to the song. It was definitely a challenge to make this song and see how all of our influences coexisted.

Aria: The language and expressions used in the song are a real part of how we express ourselves in Colombia. Afrobeats are also really popular on the Caribbean coast, so it was cool to have a little bit of influence from that.

Andy: The song we did was a perfect mix of the different flavors of all the writers and producers involved in the creative process. A little bit of afro, urbano, and pop defines the musical essence of our song.

What did you learn about yourself from this experience? What did you learn from your collaborators?

maye: I learned how to go with the flow and allow the song to unfold. From my collaborators, it was inspiring to see how everyone came up with ideas on the spot.

Aria: I learned to step out of my comfort zone. I usually work with two producers that know me and my taste in music so well that I don’t have to communicate what I like and don’t like. I also rarely work with songwriters. It was nice to meet and communicate with other people and learn from their talent, culture, and artistry. I also learned how they perceive a song from their artistry. That sounds simple, but it’s a whole world of melodies, harmonies, language, expressions, culture—it’s a lot.

Andy: I learned about the incredible music Aria and Juan are doing. I was already aware of the incredible job maye was doing with her project. I really enjoyed having three artists who were so different but at the same time so connected with the same energy, while writing our song.

How does travel impact both production choices and the songs you write?

maye: Traveling is a way to keep me inspired by absorbing whatever culture, sights, and traditions the place has to offer.

Aria: Travel impacts the songs I write because getting to know new places, their traditions, foods, their way of speaking, and overall culture is really inspiring. 

Andy: It has a great impact. Being in a different city with different weather, food, and musical influences give you another perspective on what we do!

Nearly a Quarter of All Streams on Spotify Are Hip-Hop. Spotify’s Global Editors Reflect on the Genre’s Growth

As hip-hop turns 50, fans around the world are celebrating its golden anniversary. For a genre that started at a block party in the Bronx, this milestone is a testament to the massive impact and influence hip-hop has had in virtually every corner of the globe.

And today on Spotify, hip-hop is thriving, with artists and fans from around the world discovering and connecting with one another. In 2023, nearly a quarter of all streams on Spotify globally are hip-hop music, led by artists like Drake, Nicki Minaj, 21 Savage, Ice Spice, and Metro Boomin.

But it goes further than that . . . 

  • Hip-hop is one of the most-listened-to genres globally on Spotify, and more than 400 million users around the world have streamed hip-hop music in 2023 so far.
  • RapCaviar ranks as the second most-followed playlist on Spotify. 
  • Around the globe, there are over 53 million user-generated and Spotify-curated playlists on Spotify that mention hip-hop or rap in the title of the playlist, and over 2 billion playlists that contain at least one hip-hop song
  • For the past three years, almost half of Spotify’s Top 50 most-streamed artists globally have been hip-hop or rap artists. 

One of the most distinct aspects of hip-hop culture is its regionality, with the unique sounds coming out of local U.S. scenes like New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Miami helping one of the most dynamic genres in the world flourish.

Toast Hip-Hop’s 50th Anniversary With Our Special Playlist Hub, Murals, Animated Shorts, and More

Fifty years ago, hip-hop was born in the Bronx. And today, it continues to influence music and culture on a global scale. To celebrate this massive milestone over the next month, we’re creating murals in some of hip-hop’s biggest capitals, giving fans a personalized hip-hop listening experience with our DJ, and releasing a series of animated shorts. But to kick off the festivities, we’re launching the Hip-Hop Turns 50 hub.

Highlighting the contributions of hip-hop’s greats, this special destination will live on-platform over the next month and house more than 40 global playlists that reflect the various eras, regions, and trends that have shaped the genre over the last half-century. This includes many of our top data-driven and editorially curated playlists, as well as dedicated shelves for the 50 most-streamed rappers and hip-hop albums on Spotify. 

“We wanted to acknowledge the anniversary in more than one way. Three months ago, we kicked off conversations on social media with our Top 50 Hip-Hop lists and are now showcasing how hip-hop’s and Spotify’s history intersects,” said Carl Chery, Creative Director, Head of Urban Music, Spotify. “Throughout August, we’re paying homage to some of the artists that paved the way in their own cities with murals and billboards, creating an animated shorts series narrated by artists, and built out a destination on platform that features a variety of playlists from around the world. Fans can dive into the best hip-hop songs of each decade with special curations for the ’80s, ’90s, ’00s, and ’10s, as well as the ’20s, where listeners can tune in to RapCaviar, our flagship hip-hop playlist, to find the best of hip-hop today. As part of the global hip-hop shelf—which features playlists like Spotify Italy’s Plus Ultra, Spotify India’s Rap 91, Spotify Korea’s KrOWN, Spotify U.K.’s Who We Be, the Spotify Middle East’s Arab Hip-Hop, and Spotify Philippines’ Kayle Hip-Hop—we’re showcasing the hottest, freshest, and most diverse hip-hop sounds being created around the world.

We’re also revisiting some of our editors’ top picks through our 50 years of hip-hop shelf, which features episodes from podcasts like the New York Times’s Popcast and Fab 5 Freddy’s 50 Years of Hip-Hop, as well as Spotify Originals like The RapCaviar Podcast, Dissect, The Ringer Music Show, and Nas and Miss Info’s The Bridge

Spotify celebrates in hip-hop’s biggest meccas

To honor some of hip-hop’s biggest game changers, Spotify is collaborating with illustrator and image-maker Raj Dhunna to design large-scale murals and billboards. These pieces will put a spotlight on artists in their respective hometowns and depict the ways rap’s most influential sounds spread from region to region. 

In New York, Spotify will unveil a mural acknowledging the history of drill as it grew from its origins in Chicago with legends like Chief Keef, and expanded into London and Brooklyn with artists like 808 Melo and Pop Smoke. A second mural will spotlight the impact of women in hip-hop and feature icons like Lil’ Kim and Cardi B

In Atlanta, Raj will create a mural that celebrates the evolution of trap music, which was pioneered by Atlanta’s own T.I. and cultivated into a global phenomenon by artists like New York’s Arcángel.

Raj’s designs will also appear on billboards in Miami and Los Angeles. The L.A. billboard will feature Dr. Dre and Mustard, two of the city’s musical titans, with a tagline that reads “Long live the West Coast sound. Hip-hop is everywhere.” The Miami billboard, meanwhile, will pay tribute to the provocative sounds of the region’s most influential women rap acts.

Spotify will also commemorate hip-hop’s growth in Mexico and pay homage to its current and foundational artists with a mural that features over 15 Mexican hip-hop artists, including Akwid, Cartel de Santa, Santa Fe Klan, and Gera Mx.

The party continues

In addition to the on-platform destinations and custom murals, our AI-powered DJ will provide expert hip-hop commentary all month long on Spotify, supplying aficionados with cultural context about musical legends and retracing how hip-hop has grown through history.

To close out the month, Spotify will debut editorially curated animated shorts that underscore hip-hop’s influence in over nine countries, featuring narrations from artists. 

Our celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary will let fans discover and connect with artists of the past, present, and future. But this is only the start. Stay tuned for updates throughout the month as we commemorate one of the most beloved genres in the world.

Anitta and Spotify Light Up Miami with Festa Kisses Fan Experience

Touting more than 16.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Anitta is a force to be reckoned with in Latin music.

On June 18 in the heart of Miami’s booming Wynwood district, Spotify and Anitta came together for Festa Kisses, a one-night extravaganza that gave Anitta’s biggest fans the opportunity to glam up and get down like the Brazilian queen. Featuring an intimate surprise performance, fans were given the chance to customize their own Anitta look with everything from make-up to wigs to props and more.

“Spotify and I shared a vision to create an empowering experience that brought the spirit of transformation and self-love to life for fans,” said Anitta. “The result was Festa Kisses. I hope fans came out and saw how amazing they are as they looked in the mirror. My styles are just a little nudge of inspiration, and I’m grateful that Spotify gave me the opportunity to host this amazing event.”

Through events like Festa Kisses, Spotify is helping to further connect artists and fans. Because, no matter how loud the beat of the music, the heartbeats of the fans are just as strong.

¡Viva Latino! Live Miami Assembles Stellar Line-up with Bad Bunny, Nicky Jam and Others

There’s no denying that Latin music—replete with infectious hooks and hip-swaying rhythm to spare—has claimed a spot among the most popular genres in the U.S., Spotify’s ¡Viva Latino! Playlist, which shares Latin anthems like Bad Bunny’s “MIA (feat. Drake)” that have topped more than half a billion streams each, is en route to surpass 10 million followers on Spotify, making it the third most followed playlist on the platform.

Music has a unique quality. It possesses the power to inspire and connect us with the creators and artists who move our souls. In the spirit of that connective power, last year we introduced our ¡Viva Latino! Live series in Chicago. On August 30th, with renowned hitmakers Bad Bunny and Nicky Jam as headliners, Spotify is taking the series to the cultural epicenter of the Latinx community – Miami.

Like “el ritmo” that defines the genre, we don’t see Latin music’s popularity waning any time soon. Latin artists continue to grow within the Global Top 100, seeing a staggering 250% increase in representation since 2014. In the last two years alone, we’ve seen an average 33% year over year increase in streams of Latin music. In fact, ¡Viva Latino! is growing at a rate 5 times quicker than any other playlist in Spotify’s Top 1000 Playlists.

“When Spotify approached me to be part of the first Viva Latino live last year I was truly honored,” says Bad Bunny. “To once again be a part of this mega experience is truly incredible. This year we are going to be on a whole other level.”

¡Viva Latino! Live Miami takes over American Airlines Arena on August 30, 2019. This installment in the series also marks the first time one of our live shows will offer ¡Viva Latino! superfans access to pre-sale tickets through www.VivaLatinoLive.com. A group of superfans in the Miami-area will be given early access to secure their spots.
