6 Artists Taking Mexico’s Pop Scene to the Next Level

Music from Mexico boasts talent across many genres, including Música Mexicana and hip-hop. But like many markets, pop remains a staple. In fact, Mexico ranks fourth as the country that consumes the most pop on Spotify, and many of the world’s beloved Spanish-language pop stars hail from Mexico.

Now Spotify is featuring the latest wave of Mexican pop stars in a new campaign: La Gen 23. “For many decades, Mexico has led the Latin pop movement,” explains Uriel Waizel, Spotify Mexico’s Head of Editorial. “We are excited to amplify a new era of pop by showcasing the talented and creative Mexican artists who are captivating a new generation through music.” With an identity marked by collaboration and authenticity, this new generation of talent has made an impact on its Gen Z audience. Our campaign kicks off with RENEE, Kevin Kaarl, Bruses, Bratty, Humbe, and Leon Leiden, six artists whose monthly streams have increased by more than 9,000% since June 2020. They have a combined total of 18.4 millions monthly listeners—more than double the population of Mexico City. By bringing these artists to the fore, we’re giving fans a look at the newest and hottest pop stars coming out of Mexico. Get to know them. 

Kevin Kaarl

Kevin Kaarl has become one of the leading figures of the pop wave. His emotional indie-folk songs have hooked more than 7 million fans who relate to the heartbreak he shares in his tracks. Last year, his album, Paris Texas, debuted at #5 on the Global New Releases list on Spotify. 

RENEE 

RENEE, a Spotify EQUAL ambassador, is one of the most electrifying artists of her generation. Her songs have become anthems for women, and she has nearly 2 million monthly listeners. “Nunca Tristes (Me vale madre),” her best-known song, has been streamed by fans more than 45 million times.

Bruses 

Bruses was the first Mexican artist to be named a global ambassador for GLOW, Spotify’s music program celebrating and amplifying LGBTQIA+ artists and creators. At the 2022 Latin Grammy Awards, her album Monstruos was nominated for Best Pop Rock Album, and her track “qué voy a hacer conmigo???” was nominated for Best Pop Rock Song.

Humbe 

Humbe, hailing from Monterrey, has a knack for releasing hit songs. His 2021 album, ENTROPÍA, was well received, with all of the songs debuting on the Top 200 of Spotify Mexico.

Leon Leiden 

At 23, artist Leon Leiden has racked up nearly 50 million streams for his song “Gitana (feat Jeis, Pao Alvarado & Charly Romero).” With an unparalleled style, the music of “ESE LION” has grown by more than 2,600% in monthly streams between June 2020 and June 2023.

Bratty 

In 2023, Bratty became the youngest Mexican artist to perform at Coachella. While commanding the stage in Indio, California, Bratty performed hits like “Honey, No Estás,” “Continental,” and “Quiero Estar.”

La música proveniente de México cuenta con talento en muchos géneros, como la música mexicana y el hip-hop. Pero, como en muchos otros mercados, el pop sigue siendo un elemento básico. Kevin Kaarl

Bratty

Spotify’s Artists To Watch Are Primed To Make Moves in 2023

It’s always exciting when artists enter the realm of bonafide stardom and bring new sounds and ideas to the music world. And it’s even more exciting to follow along as it happens. That’s why, at the start of each year, we tap our influential playlists to reveal our Artists To Watch. 

With this list, we’re amplifying the next wave of music stars who we predict will make an impact in 2023. As we considered this year’s Artists To Watch, we were guided by four main playlists:

  • Viva Latino, our flagship playlist for today’s top Latin hits

Saucy Santana
This makeup artist turned rapper commanded the spotlight when his tracks “Walk” and “Here We Go” went viral in 2021. Notable collaborations include the remix of his song “Material Girl” with the “Queen of Pop” Madonna, hip-hop duo City Girls, and Latto

Emilia
Finding fame with hits such as “Recalienta” and “No Soy Yo” featuring Darell, this Argentine artist continues to generate buzz. Her first album, Tú crees en mí?, debuted at No. 4 on Spotify’s Top Albums Global chart.

Ivan Cornejo
A California native and one of the most promising voices in the sad sierreño scene, Ivan caught the attention of the music world with his debut album Alma Vacía, and is a pivotal figure in exporting Música Mexicana out of the U.S. 

Chris Lebron
This rising Dominican artist already has a few notable collaborations under his belt, most notably teaming up with Romeo Santos on his popular track “SIRI.”

Kevin Kaarl
His most recent album, Paris Texas, debuted at #5 on the Top Albums Global Chart which experiments with traditional folk, rock, and lush dream-pop and. In addition to being an Artist To Watch in 2023, the Mexican singer was also part of our RADAR Class of 2022.

Paopao
A Latin Grammy award-winning artist known for her mix of reggaeton and alternative pop, this Puerto Rico native released the all-female EP hembrismo in 2022.

YOVNGCHIMI
A rising star from Puerto Rico, this Latin trap artist is best known for his debut single “Glizzy’s Walk.” He has numerous collaborations with prominent artists in the Latin trap scene, including Arcangel, Anuel AA, and Ozuna.

Villano Antillano
One of the leading figures of the queer movement within the urban genre in Puerto Rico, Villano was most recently selected as an ambassador for RADAR US, Spotify’s global program for emerging artists.

Young Miko
This Puerto Rican artist burst onto the scene in 2021 with the release of her first single, “105 Freestyle.” Her debut EP Trap Kitty and US Tour solidified her as a Spotify RADAR US artist. 

3AM
A duo made up of Venezuelan brothers Richard and Christian Bermúdez, 3AM started their musical career after leaving their home country and settling in Boston. They are best known for their songs “Por Ti” and “Vuela.” 

Fuerza Regida
Trailblazers of the urban corrido movement, this California group is making waves for a new generation of Mexican Music artists.

Our picks from Hot Country bring a fresh and unique sound to the world, and these artists are primed to make their mark on the country music scene this year. 

Avery Anna
Having opened for acts like Josh Turner and Martina McBride, the Nashville singer-songwriter is best known for her 2022 single “Narcissist,” featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist.

Dylan Marlowe
Popping up on the scene with his viral cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driver’s License,” he’s continued to make waves with his catchy breakup track “Goodbye Gets Around.”

Megan Moroney
The Georgia native made her debut in 2022 with her EP Pistol Made of Roses, and has since built on that momentum with the release of her viral hit “Tenessee Orange.”

Restless Road
This Nashville-based country music band first attracted fans with their song “Take Me Home,” a collaboration with Kane Brown that was inspired by John Denver’s iconic track “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” They went on to reach new heights in 2022 with their hit single “Growing Old With You,” which they performed on Season 26 of the television series The Bachelor.  

Tanner Adell
Bringing a fresh new vibe to country music, Tanner’s catchy and dance-worthy singles “Country Girl Commandments” and “Honky Tonky Heartbreak” have continued to generate buzz.

R&B Rising’s Artists To Watch

To cap things off, R&B Rising also revealed its first-ever roster of emerging stars who are primed to make waves in R&B music this year. 

CoCo Jones
Working in TV and film since she was a tween, and most recently starring as Hilary Banks in Bel-Air, Coco has moved into the R&B spotlight with a soulful sound and honest, powerful storytelling. In 2022, she made her major label debut with her EP, What I Didn’t Tell You, and was featured on Babyface’s “Simple.”

FLO
This British girl group took the world by storm in 2022 with their breakthrough single “Cardboard Box.” They closed out the year winning the 2023 Rising Star Award and BBC’s Sound of 2023 poll. 

Alex Vaughn
Alex first disrupted the industry in early 2022 with the release of Voice Notes, an honest and raw EP constructed entirely by using the voice notes app on her phone. She followed up the project with her debut album The Hurtbook

DESTIN CONRAD
A native of Florida, Destin first found internet fame on the social media app Vine thanks to his lush, intimate earworms. That same sound, infused with a gentle touch, can be heard on his latest EP, Satin

Fana Hues
Known for her vulnerable voice and woozy vocals, she’s featured on Tyler, The Creator’s Call Me if You Get Lost and released her latest album, flora + fana, in 2022.

LAYA
This dynamic NYC native has made waves by taking ’90s R&B and giving it a current, authentic spin, like she did with her breakout hit “Sailor Moon.”

Q
With a powerful falsetto and a stripped-back, emotionally complex sound, this alternative R&B artist went viral with his track “Take Me Where Your Heart Is” and has continued to win fans with his most recent release, “Today.” 

RAAHiiM
The Toronto artist first hit the R&B scene in 2020 with his EP ii Knew Better. Known for his multidimensional vocals and sultry production, he has since collaborated with Shantel May and Rory

JVCK JAMES
After initially gaining recognition for his viral internet videos, this East London artist’s star has continued to grow thanks to his ‘90s R&B-inspired tunes and 2021 standout single “No Drama.”

Dylan Sinclair
This Candian singer-songwriter earned immediate acclaim for his debut album Proverb, which was nominated for Traditional R&B/Soul Recording of the Year at the 2021 Juno Awards.

Kevin Kaarl graba su propia versión de “Prenda del Alma” de Chalino Sánchez para Spotify Singles

La música de Kevin Kaarl, cantautor mexicano de 21 años, se ha convertido en el soundtrack perfecto para una generación. Con un estilo único, una voz profunda, guitarra punteada y letras melancólicas, las canciones de Kevin resuenan con fans que acuden a ellas para encontrar una mezcla de vulnerabilidad y esperanza. 

El artista originario del pequeño pueblo de Meoqui, en el norteño estado de Chihuahua, se ha distinguido por darle vida a un sonido nostálgico desde que lanzó su primer sencillo San Lucas.” 

Tres años más tarde y como la tercera apuesta de RADAR México en 2022, Kevin Kaarl cuenta con 8.3 millones de oyentes mensuales y en tan solo un año ha disparado el número de streams en más de 400%. 

Ahora, Kevin Kaarl lanza para Spotify Singles su propia versión de “Prenda del Alma”, popularizada por Chalino Sánchez. La canción fue grabada en los Electric Lady Studios en Nueva York, en medio de la gira del artista por los Estados Unidos. En la producción minimalista, lograda en un par de tomas en el estudio, se escucha en la trompeta a Bryan Kaarl, hermano gemelo de Kevin, quien a menudo es parte de sus presentaciones en vivo. 

La canción fue compuesta por Pedro J González, también originario de Chihuahua, en la década de los treinta y fue interpretada famosamente  por la leyenda de los corridos, Chalino Sánchez.  La extraordinaria vida de Chalino, desde su humilde origen en Sinaloa rural hasta el misterio que rodea su trágica muerte a inicios de los noventa, se ha convertido en materia de culto entre una nueva generación de artistas que regresan a las raíces de la música mexicana. 

El sonido indie-folk que Kevin Kaarl ha perfeccionado como compositor se refleja en sus álbumes, San Lucas y Hasta el Fin del Mundo, ambos lanzados en 2019, y su más reciente entrega, París Texas, que debutó en la posición #5 dentro de la lista de estrenos globales en Spotify.

For the Record habló con Kevin sobre su nuevo Spotify Single, la música que lo ha marcado desde niño y su identidad como artista.

¿Por qué decidiste hacer un cover de “Prenda Del Alma” de Chalino?

Chalino es un personaje muy importante en México, sobre todo en el norte del país por todo lo que representa como artista. Últimamente se ha popularizado y aún más gente joven lo escucha. 

Siento que él fue uno de los cantantes que ha implantado la esencia de lo que es un corrido y por eso popularizó el género. Yo crecí escuchando toda su música y se me hizo interesante entender cómo podía acoplar mi estilo a un corrido de aquellos tiempos, sobre todo de alguien tan importante como él. Me gusta mucho el estilo que Chalino tenía y la forma tan suya de cantar, muy honesta y del rancho. 

Durante tu infancia y adolescencia en Chihuahua, ¿cuál era la música que más escuchabas y qué papel tuvo?

En realidad me crié con la música que mis papás escuchaban en aquellos tiempos, la que escuchábamos en familia en los viajes, de artistas como Marco Antonio Solís, Los Bukis y Conjunto Primavera

Cuando tenía seis años de edad y acababa de entrar a la primaria concursé con la canción “Casas de Cartón” de Marco Antonio Solís y de hecho quedé en primer lugar. Así que en mis memorias está el escuchar a esos cantantes populares del norte del país, corridos y a Chalino.

¿En qué momento sientes que encontraste tu voz para escribir canciones?

Cuando estaba en la universidad, recuerdo que agarraba la guitarra acústica nada más para desestresarme, ni siquiera tocaba acordes. Nada más lo hacía para jugar con los dedos y las cuerdas. Poco a poco empecé a crear canciones con mi voz y guitarra. 

Al principio no tenía muy definido qué es lo que yo quería para ese proyecto. Primero hice una canción porque estaba aburrido, la publiqué y ví que le fue bien. Así que decidí seguirle. 

A finales de 2018 me di cuenta que ya tenía tres canciones a las que les estaba yendo bien y decidí hacer un álbum con pura guitarra acústica y mi voz. Pero hasta que grabé el álbum de “San Lucas” decidí quería tener un estilo campirano y poco a poco mi sonido ha evolucionado hasta encontrar el estilo que tengo con el nuevo álbum, que es una mezcla de folk y pop. Por ahora es lo que quiero para mi música.

¿Cómo lograste imprimirle tu esencia a esta canción de Chalino?

Algo muy importante es que le metí mi guitarra acústica, mi voz y la trompeta de mi hermano Bryan, algo que la gente ya conoce y lo relaciona con mi proyecto. Además con mi nuevo estilo, que tiene más toques de pop y alternativos, incorporé un riff de guitarra eléctrica. 

Este año publicaste junto con Leon Bridges el track “Summer Moon” ¿Cómo fue que surgió esta colaboración? 

Allá por el 2018 encontré el video de su canción ‘River’, y realmente se quedó en mi cabeza como una fuente de inspiración. Incluso durante la pandemia, recuerdo que esa canción junto con su historia fue la referencia principal para el video musical de una canción mía. Cuando me hablaron de una colaboración con Leon Bridges, no dudé en aceptar.

En el coro del sencillo “Como me encanta” dices “como me encanta estar sufriendo” ¿Por qué crees que ese estado de ánimo conecta con tus fans?

Siento que, actualmente, todo el mundo tenemos problemas, sobre todo los jóvenes. Es más fácil identificarse con cosas tristes que con cosas felices. Incluso para mí es más fácil escribir de cosas que me hacen daño, que de las que me hacen feliz. Siento que a la gente le gusta esta música melancólica porque es un sentimiento que los hace sentir comprendidos y acompañados, aunque estén tristes y los hace sentir un poco mejor, dentro de su misma tristeza. Es otra forma en la que la música nos une.
