Música Mexicana Isn’t Just a Phenomenon in Mexico and the U.S.—It’s Taking Over Latin America.

As one of the fastest-growing sounds worldwide, Música Mexicana is more than just a genre. It’s an essential part of Mexican culture, encompassing its history, traditions, and values.

Take the corrido, for example—a traditional form of song born from Mexico’s revolutionary times, and one of Música Mexicana’s most prominent styles. Corridos tell the stories of both real and fictional characters, inviting the audience to immerse themselves in heroic lyrics that convey past and present experiences.

But the genre’s impact isn’t limited to Mexico. Instead, it resonates with fans from different countries and cultures. And thanks to social media—as well as the global Spotify charts—Música Mexicana has seen a sharp uptick in popularity. Between 2018 and 2023, Música Mexicana streams on Spotify grew by more than 440% globally, and last year alone, streams rose by 55%. Additionally, Gen Z streams of Música Mexicana have grown by nearly 60% on Spotify over the last year.

Música Mexicana’s influence has especially grown throughout Latin America, where streams have increased by more than 195% between 2020 and 2023.

Need further proof of Música Mexicana’s spread throughout Latin America? Look to the regular stream of recent hits that feature the genre’s biggest stars alongside the hottest hitmakers throughout the region.

Last year, Grupo Frontera collaborated with Bad Bunny on “un100xto,” which became the most-streamed Música Mexicana song in a single day, as well as the group’s biggest hit to date. And just this month, Natanael Cano appeared on Bizarrap’s “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 59.”

Made in Mexico, big in Colombia

In Colombia, where Mexican culture has also left its mark on film, television, and food, Música Mexicana has developed a life of its own, with Spotify streams surging by 445% between 2020 and 2023. The instruments, melodies, and lyrics of the genre have greatly influenced the current generation of Colombian music and in turn spawned a number of collaborations between Mexican and Colombian artists, beginning with Christian Nodal and Piso 21’s “Pa’ Olvidarme De Ella.”

Most notably, Peso Pluma appeared on Karol G’s “QLONA” and invited Blessd to hop on “LAS MORRAS,” while Carin Leon teamed up with Maluma on “Según Quién” and Piso 21 on “Que Triste.” Perhaps not coincidentally, both artists stand as the top two Música Mexicana artists when it comes to Spotify streams in Colombia.

These collaborations have enhanced the visibility of the genre in Colombia, resulting in a greater number of Colombian listeners’ embracing Música Mexicana artists and songs.

Scratching the surface

Música Mexicana may be enjoying its moment in the Colombian sun, but all signs indicate that the genre is just heating up abroad. For touring Música Mexicana artists, Colombia has emerged as a must-stop destination, with Carin Leon performing there for the first time in 2023; Grupo Frontera took the stage at the Estéreo Picnic Festival in Bogotá earlier this year.

While Música Mexicana’s stars have found a wealth of success in Colombia, Colombian artists are making waves in Mexico as well: Colombian singer-songwriter Camilo—who has collaborated with the likes of Grupo Firme on “Alaska,” Carin Leon on “Una Vida Pasada,” and Christian Nodal on “La Mitad”—receives more streams from fans in Mexico City than anywhere else in the world.

Estos constituyen uno de los estilos más distintivos de la Música Mexicana y narran las vivencias de personajes tanto reales como ficticios, invitando a los oyentes a explorar letras heroicas que reflejan experiencias pasadas y presentes.

Más allá de sus fronteras, el impacto de este género musical se extiende a diversas culturas y países. Gracias a las redes sociales – así como a las listas globales de Spotify – la Música Mexicana ha visto un notable incremento en su popularidad. ‘La Tierra de Texas’ Celebrates the Tejano Legacy of Música Mexicana at the Houston Rodeo

On February 26, 1995, Selena walked into the middle of the Astrodome as the headlining act for the Houston Rodeo’s Go Tejano Day and delivered a performance that would help solidify her status as a musical legend. And nearly 30 years later, not only have her fans streamed her songs more than 2 billion times on Spotify, but they’re still talking about that iconic performance.

Just as Selena was more than a singer, the Houston Rodeo is more than an annual event for many Texans—they are both institutions beloved across generations. And as millions of people enjoy this year’s three-week celebration of all things cowboy, Spotify is helping music take center stage at the rodeo once again with La Tierra de Texas. With live musical performances including Ivan Cornejo and Los Tigres del Norte, Música Mexicana was ever present in 2024’s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

On March 10 during this year’s Go Tejano Day—one of the biggest highlights on the Houston Rodeo calendar—we’re paying homage to Tejano culture’s impact on Música Mexicana and celebrating the genre’s evolution, from Selena to Peso Pluma.

Over the past year, Música Mexicana streams on Spotify have grown by 47% globally as the genre has quickly become one of Spotify’s most popular. In 2023, luminaries Peso Pluma, Junior H, Natanael Cano, Fuerza Regida, and Grupo Frontera not only propelled the genre forward and helped redefine what it could be, but they all also finished the year among Spotify’s Top 50 global artists. Moreover, many struck gold with hit collaborations inside and outside Musica Mexicana, including “Ella Baila Sola” by Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma, “un x100to” by Grupo Frontera and Bad Bunny, and “Peso Pluma: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 55” by Bizarrap and Peso Pluma, all of which topped the Spotify global charts.

At the same time, Selena has shown that Música Mexicana’s global appeal isn’t just about new hits; fans love the classics too. To date, Selena’s songs have been streamed more than 2 billion times on Spotify, with more than 1 billion of those coming from her breakout album, Amor Prohibido, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this month.

But her popularity only continues to grow on Spotify. Over the past five years, Selena’s streams have increased by 227% globally.

A big reason for this is that Gen Z listeners stream Selena on Spotify roughly as much as millennials do. In fact…

More than 15 million Gen Z listeners streamed at least one Selena song in 2023.
Each week for the past year, Gen Z listeners streamed Selena songs more than 3.5 million times.

As Música Mexicana has evolved, Tejano culture continues to influence the genre. Spotify Celebrates the Past and Present of Corridos With ‘La Tierra del Corrido’

Among the countless hits and fan favorites under the Música Mexicana umbrella, no genre has been more steeped in history, tradition, and storytelling as Mexico’s accordion-laced corridos. Over the years, artists such as Chalino Sanchez, Los Tigres del Norte, Ramon Ayala, and Los Tucanes de Tijuana have become staples in Mexican households and gained strong recognition worldwide for their music.

While the corrido has always been a persistent part of Mexican culture during its roughly 200-year history, it’s a music that has recently grown in popularity among a new generation of fans and artists from around the world. And as the Corridos 2023 playlist on Spotify has shown, there is no shortage of newcomers taking their nostalgia of corridos in new and interesting directions.

Over the past few years, a new style known as corridos tumbados has quickly grown in popularity, with artists like Peso Pluma, Chino Pacas, and Natanael Cano quickly rising as the faces of the genre. Combining traditional sounds with contemporary themes, this new wave of artists narrate the daily stories of Mexican teenagers and young adults looking to make it in their country despite the realities they face every day. And these artists are not only continuing the legacy of corridos in Mexico, but they’re dominating the global charts as well.

The rise in popularity corridos have seen simply can’t be overstated. Over the past five years, the worldwide consumption of the genre has increased 413%, with a 42% rise this year compared to last. And corridos have dominated the Música Mexicana streaming landscape in 2023, accounting for 77% of all streams within the genre. In other words, nearly 8 out of every 10 songs listened to under the Música Mexicana umbrella were corridos.

Given the corrido’s recent resurgence in popularity and its rich storytelling history, we’ve launched, “La Tierra del Corrido,” an on-platform hub and campaign that celebrates the rich history of corridos. Spread out into chapters made up of videos and exclusive Spotify Singles, “La Tierra del Corrido” will tell the story of corridos, through the lenses of Música Mexicana legends and the newest generation of corrido stars like Fuerza Regida, Junior H, and Vivir Quintana.

Celebrate the Sights and Sounds From an Unforgettable FC Barcelona US Preseason Tour

Earlier this month, FC Barcelona landed in the U.S. to kick off their preseason tour, get ready for another exciting season of football, and celebrate the second year of our partnership. Over the course of two busy weeks, Spotify and FC Barcelona brought the worlds of music and football together through matches and studio tours, as well as collaborations with artists and fans.

As soon as the FC Barcelona squad arrived in the U.S., we asked fans to help soundtrack the club’s summer adventure and vote on the 10 songs they’d love to see added to the Barça On Tour: US 2023 playlist, which features the players’ favorite tracks. We then invited Anitta and Fuerza Regida to have a little fun with us to determine which tracks made the final list. The iconic artists joined FC Barcelona’s players on the field, where they took part in a playful penalty challenge. Each song was represented by a penalty attempt, and whenever the ball hit the target, that song was added to the playlist.

A California native and one of the most promising voices in the sad sierreño scene, Ivan caught the attention of the music world with his debut album Alma Vacía, and is a pivotal figure in exporting Música Mexicana out of the U.S.

This rising Dominican artist already has a few notable collaborations under his belt, most notably teaming up with Romeo Santos on his popular track “SIRI.”

Kevin Kaarl

A rising star from Puerto Rico, this Latin trap artist is best known for his debut single “Glizzy’s Walk.” He has numerous collaborations with prominent artists in the Latin trap scene, including Arcangel, Anuel AA, and Ozuna.

Villano Antillano
One of the leading figures of the queer movement within the urban genre in Puerto Rico, Villano was most recently selected as an ambassador for RADAR US, Spotify’s global program for emerging artists.

Young Miko

Spotify Celebrates the Enduring Legacy and Momentum of Mexican Music With ‘Orgullosos de la Mexcla’ Campaign

Mexican music has a rich tradition of storytelling. Songs like “La Jaula de Oro” by Los Tigres del Norte or “Corrido de Juanito” by Calibre 50 bridge generations and have the power to culturally connect those who have migrated.

Today, those sounds—which have commonly been referred to as “regional Mexican”—have changed to reflect different communities and cultures. A new generation of Mexican and Mexican American artists like Natanael Cano and Fuerza Regida are blending traditional corridos with hip-hop. Grupo Firme is reinventing the festive sound of banda. And acts like Yahritza y Su Esencia and Eslabon Armado are reviving the sound of sierreño. Together, these styles are loudly reclaiming influence on both sides of the border.

All of these make up a new wave of Mexican music. On Spotify, the genre had over 39 billion streams globally in 2021, fueled by a 39% increase in Mexico and 31% in the United States. In total, this amounted to 150 billion minutes of listening on the platform. In the last five years, listening has increased by 450% globally, and today, one in three listeners of Mexican music is from Gen Z.

A new generation of fans is discovering the music their parents loved and reconciling their musical identity around cultures that once stood apart. To celebrate this unique connection, Spotify has released our latest original film highlighting the evolution of the genre as part of our campaign, “Orgullosos de la Mexcla.”

The film, narrated by Eden Muñoz, depicts the stories of two generations of Mexican culture. Banda MS’s hit “La Casita,” a song Muñoz wrote about migration and nostalgia for the loved ones left behind, plays over vintage video footage paired with old family photos a father carried on his northbound journey. The video then cuts to the man’s son in Mexico City rushing to a skatepark dressed in the style of the new Mexican wave, where cowboy hats give way to baseball caps. The two cultures are visibly merged with the creation of a Blend playlist on screen, representing how borderless the music is today and how it has evolved with new sounds, rhythms, and aesthetics.

Spotify is also expanding our latest Blend feature to allow fans to create a merged playlist with both Eden Muñoz, whose hit “Chale” topped the Spotify Mexico chart, and Banda MS, the all-time most-streamed Mexican group globally in the forthcoming days. This ability to bring fans together with their favorite artists also speaks to the essence of Mexcla.

“The idea of Mexcla has multiple meanings for me,” Muñoz told For the Record. “More than the mixing of sounds we do in the studio, it carries much more meaning when we speak to the fusion of cultures and all the different trends in the music itself.”

Desde la revolución mexicana a principios del siglo XX, el corrido ha sido una tradición musical que canta las historias que merecen ser contadas sobre temas como la vida y la muerte, y las andanzas de héroes y villanos.

Al igual que otras formas de baladas épicas, un corrido suele ser un relato de hechos reales y tiene una moraleja en la historia. Sin embargo, la tradición del corrido es única en su perdurable popularidad en todo México y en la frontera con los Estados Unidos.

La era clásica del corrido nació con artistas como Los Tigres Del Norte, quienes, durante más de 50 años, popularizaron el género contando historias del pueblo, ya sea sobre la migración o formas de ganarse la vida, honradamente o no. Leyendas como Los Tucanes De Tijuana y Chalino Sánchez están siendo redescubiertas por una nueva generación de artistas que siguen sus pasos.

Hoy, el género está evolucionando al fusionar los requintos de guitarra, la tuba y acordeón con la cultura del hip hop y los beats del trap para conectar con una nueva generación de oyentes.

La escucha del género de corridos de esta generación aumentó un 116% en los últimos dos años, y estos oyentes han creado más de 35 millones de playlists que incluyen música de corridos.

Spotify Celebrates the Revival of Corridos With the Corridos Perrones Playlist and Exclusive Content From Legends and Newcomers of the Genre

Since the Mexican Revolution at the beginning of the 20th century, the corrido has been a musical tradition of singing stories that deserve to be told on topics like life and death—and the adventures of heroes and villains.

Like other forms of epic ballads, a corrido is typically an account of true events and has a moral to the story. However, the corrido tradition is unique in its enduring popularity throughout Mexico and across the United States border.

The classic era of the corrido was born with artists like Los Tigres Del Norte, who, for more than 50 years, popularized the genre by telling stories of the people, covering themes like migration and ways of making a living—honorably or otherwise. Legends such as Los Tucanes De Tijuana and Chalino Sánchez are now being rediscovered by a new generation of artists who are following in their footsteps.

Today, the corridos genre is also evolving to connect with a new generation of listeners. Artists are fusing the signature guitar, tuba, and accordion with hip-hop culture and trap-style beats.

It’s not surprising then that it is one of the most popular subgenres today, accounting for about half of the streams within the universe of Regional Mexican music. In fact, in the last five years, listening has increased 91% globally,* reaching 24 billion streams on the platform in 2021.

Mexico remains the top market for the genre and listeners’ passion for the music continues to grow: Last year the country had a 28%* increase in streams of corridos. The U.S. ranks second for corridos listening and saw a 16% increase in streams of the genre last year. Corridos’ popularity is growing in other countries as well, leading with Guatemala, Chile, Colombia, and Spain.

Hand in hand with a new generation of artists, the genre is gaining popularity among young listeners (between 18 and 24 years of age), who represent 40% of all listeners on Spotify.
