Spotify Everywhere Shows the Way We Soundtrack Everyday Life

If it feels as though there are thousands of ways you can listen to Spotify, you’re right. In fact, we’re available on more than 2,000 devices that fit Spotify seamlessly into your life when they’re coupled with our exciting and innovative features and integrations.

As a way to showcase the many places you can listen to Spotify, we’re hosting Spotify Everywhere this week in New York City. This immersive audio experience lets guests try out interactive demos, take part in sharable photo opportunities, and discover new features that will make listening to songs and podcasts even more enjoyable.

Curious what’s on display? Here’s a glimpse at all the current (and future) ways that Spotify integrates with your life.

Lounging about in the living room

Upon arriving at Spotify Everywhere, our guests first visit our living room experience. It’s here they learn about how Spotify Connect turns Spotify into the ultimate remote control for a wide range of speakers from companies like Sony, Google, Sonos, Bose, Amazon, Roku, Ikea, Devialet, Marshall, Naim, Bang & Olufsen, and more.

We also have the Microsoft Xbox gaming station, which highlights Spotify’s custom integration with Microsoft’s console to let people listen to their favorite songs while playing the hottest new games.

But ultimately, low-key moments in the living room are also a great time to discover new music, and so we’ve been inviting guests to sit down in our listening nook and take a moment to learn about the upcoming redesign of our Home feed, which will make it even easier to discover personalized recommendations for music and podcasts in the app.

Now you’re cooking

For the foodies out there, there’s no better place to hang out than the kitchen. That’s why we’ve made sure to show how our integration with the Samsung Bespoke Family Hub™ refrigerator means all their favorite songs, podcasts, and playlists are at their fingertips while grabbing a snack. Those curious enough to peek inside will also discover a few easter eggs we left behind that offer some choice playlist recommendations.

And since no kitchen experience is complete without a little cooking, it’s here where we invite guests to grab a snack and check out our recipe book, which offers step-by-step tutorials on how to use some of Spotify’s more handy features, like how to look up lyrics to a song or make collaborative playlists with friends

The kitchen also features the Blender Bar, which provides a series of scannable QR codes that let guests experience the joy of Spotify’s Blend playlists. Combining the best of Spotify’s personalization capabilities and collaborative playlist functionality into a single shared playlist, the Blend feature allows you to combine your tastes with up to 10 friends, or with some of your favorite artists, such as Lizzo.

Where the magic happens

Next up on the Spotify Everywhere tour is a stop in the bedroom, which is where guests experience one of our most unique and innovative integrations: Philips Hue + Spotify. Any song played on Spotify is magically synced with Philips Hue’s array of smart bulbs and lamps, and the result is a symphony of light that pulses, flashes, and changes colors in time with the music.

It’s here that guests can also learn how to use the Google Clock App and our Sleep Timer feature. So whether you want to wake up to the Morning Coffee playlist or doze off with the Sleep playlist, Spotify will help make sure you’re ready to take on the day.

Time to accessorize

Those visiting Spotify Everywhere also have a chance to plunder our closet, which is full of Spotify-branded swag such as shirts, bucket hats, and socks. And they can check out some of the latest and greatest wearables, like smartwatches from Fossil and Garmin as well as wireless earbuds from Sony that take advantage of our Spotify Tap integration. With a single press of a button, anyone using Spotify Tap–enabled earbuds can jump back into the most recent playlist or album they were listening to, and even pause the audio or skip tracks.

Ready for a road trip?

While a house might serve as the setting for Spotify Everywhere, there are so many other places where you can access your favorite songs and podcasts. And so guests can step outside to the driveway to see all the ways to listen to Spotify in the car.

With our personalized Your Daily Drive playlist, the dreaded morning commute will feel like a breeze. If you’re hitting the highways and adventuring somewhere new, our in-app integrations with Google Maps and Waze will help ensure that you never get lost. And if you have a stereo equipped with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, all you have to do is connect your phone via USB to activate the in-dash experience optimized for cars.

Step into the metaverse

Sure, you can listen to Spotify from the comfort of your home or while out in the world. But did you know you can also experience Spotify in the metaverse? Earlier this year, we launched Spotify Island on Roblox, where fans and artists from all over the world can hang out and explore a wonderland of sounds, quests, and exclusive merch. And to offer a taste of the metaverse IRL, we have a 360-degree photo booth to capture our Spotify Everywhere guests in a unique way.

Fun in the sun

To cap off the Spotify Everywhere experience, our guests can grab a drink and relax in our backyard while listening to a selection of chill tracks from our DJs, Brittany Sky and Vashtie.

And it’s a well-deserved rest because, as you can see, we have a lot to share at Spotify Everywhere. Whether you’re at home, on the go, or linked up with one of our many other partners such as Delta, Tinder, or Rivian, there is no shortage of ways to access all your favorite songs and podcasts on Spotify. And hopefully, you’ve also discovered a few new ways to get the most out of your Spotify experience.

Three Ways to Navigate to Spotify on Your New Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S

Today, the next generation of Xbox consoles available for gamers around the world. Whether you’re going for the new Xbox Series X, the fastest, most powerful Xbox ever, or Xbox Series S, which delivers next-generation performance in the smallest Xbox ever, both offer a high-quality gaming experience and easy-to-access Spotify controls so you can stream your favorite music while in the zone.

Similar to the Xbox One, you’ll still be able to:

  • Navigate to Spotify straight from the Xbox Guide and listen to your choice of music while you play.
  • Control playback of Spotify through the Spotify app on the console, or use the Spotify app on mobile or tablet for uninterrupted gaming.

But you’ll also be able to navigate to Spotify in three new ways that will get the music started faster and more easily than ever before:

  1. Beginning November 17, navigate to Spotify quickly and easily through the “Audio & Music” section of the Xbox Guide. Now you can launch Spotify from the Xbox Guide and  continue your music session without missing a beat.
  2. Beginning later this year, get a smoother onboarding experience with the Xbox Mobile Companion App for the new Xbox Series. This will become the easiest method to get to Spotify and stream it while gaming, and Spotify will appear in all markets where listed as a top 10 free app in the Xbox Store.
  3. Plus, the new consoles’ new user interface updates deliver enhancements such as a faster launch time and content recommendations in the new Entertainment Hub under “Home.” Run by the Xbox Store Editorial Team, the new content recommendations will help more gamers be aware of the entertainment apps on Xbox, allowing them to find Spotify, install it, or launch directly into the Spotify app.

Spotify Free Users: You Can Now Stream Music on Amazon Alexa, Sonos, and Bose Speakers

Has your smart speaker become a beloved member of your family? From its spot on your kitchen counter, bedside table, or living room entertainment unit, these devices can provide hours of audio entertainment. Spotify Free users will be able to hear their favorite music on even more smart speakers, including from Amazon, Sonos, and Bose.

That’s right—free users in Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S. will, for the first time, be able to ask Alexa to play Today’s Top Hits, their Discover Weekly, or a custom-made playlist on their Amazon Echo or Fire TV. Not sure how to link your Spotify account to your new Alexa, or set Spotify as your default music player? Learn how here.

Free users around the world can also set up Spotify Connect with their Sonos speakers directly from the Spotify app. Spotify Connect works with all Sonos speakers, including the new Sonos Move, a durable, battery-powered smart speaker for great sound indoors, outdoors, and on the go. You can also connect wirelessly with the SYMFONISK IKEA WiFi Speaker—fully integrated in the Sonos Home Sound System—to play music in any or every room for a rich, home-filling sound.

Spotify Free Users can now start streaming through their Bose smart speakers and soundbars as well. Through Spotify Connect, you can use Spotify on your smartphone or desktop as a remote to get the jams going.

To play music using your Smart Speaker through Spotify Connect, first make sure that your Sonos or Bose system is updated to the latest firmware. Then open the Spotify app on your phone, laptop or tablet. Play any song, then select the “devices” icon. Finally, select the device you want to stream from and start listening. For more detailed instructions, visit our support page.

Incorporating Spotify into these devices is all part of our goal to create a truly frictionless experience for our users. Play from your phone, transition to your smart speaker, back to the phone, over to the car—with just a tap or the sound of your voice.

Both Spotify Free and Premium users in India will also be able to stream Spotify through Amazon Alexa for the first time.

Keep the Beat Going for Baby with Spotify Across Samsung Devices

Baby bouncers, rockers, and swings. They’re not always enough to keep the wee ones happy, so parents often turn to tunes as well. In fact, Spotify listeners have already streamed ~25 million hours of lullabies this year alone. But sweet dreams aren’t just made of “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Sometimes the most effective baby-soothing streams are also the most unexpected—just check out our campaign with Samsung to see what we mean.

Whether you’re streaming “Party Up” or whatever baby’s preferred jam may be, sometimes quick, easy access to your music is key. Need seamless streaming from your phone to your smart TV? No problem. Last August, Samsung announced Spotify as its new go-to music service provider, which gives Samsung users a seamless listening experience across devices. Then in March, we announced an expansion of the partnership, in which Spotify would be pre-installed on Samsung’s flagship mobile devices*, like the S10.

So, if you’re rethinking your parenting playlist or sticking with the classic lullabies, rest assured your soothing sounds are just a tap away on select* Samsung mobile devices.

*Galaxy Note9, S10, S10+, S10e, S10 5G, select Galaxy A series devices and all other Galaxy smartphones with O OS or above; may vary by region and carrier.

A Day In the Life, Based on The Playlists You Listen To

When you wake up, do you need a solid hour of coffee and chill? Or are you at the gym listening to pump-up music well before sunrise? Either way, Spotify has a playlist to match your mood—not only in the morning, but at every moment of your day.

Not surprisingly, the music people listen to often tells a story. What we didn’t know until we explored aggregate listening habits, though, is how that story plays out differently around the world. Specifically, we uncovered the general sentiments countries experience throughout the day based on the most popular mood playlists per hour.

For example, listeners in the UK go for their gym sessions in the morning before 10 AM, while in Sweden, users listen to workout playlists like Beast Mode and Träning in the afternoons between 4 and 8 PM.

Canadians seem to skip the gym first thing, and instead start their day with cozy playlists like Your Favorite Coffeehouse, then head into Happy Hits! Similarly, South Africans start off with a chill morning of Peaceful Piano, then move into a lit afternoon of RapCaviar around 2pm.

It’s Dutch listeners who stay happy the longest and latest compared to their global counterparts, with playlists like ¡La Vida Loca! streaming from 5 to 10 PM. They’re also the biggest night owls—they don’t start winding down with meditation, lullabies, and Deep Sleep playlists until around 11pm.

For a quick look into a full “day in the life” in the US, check out the infographic below.

On Spotify, there’s a playlist for every mood. Why not start out in a good one?

Sten Garmark, Spotify’s VP of Product, Unpacks Our Ubiquity Strategy

Perhaps you start your morning by streaming a pick-me-up playlist on your phone. Then, as you settle in at work you queue up some motivational songs on your laptop. After you get home, you play a podcast on your voice-activated speaker as you prep dinner. Because Spotify can be with you wherever you are, in any environment, audio opportunity abounds.

We sat down with Sten Garmark, our VP of Product, to learn more about the times, places, and situations in which audio can play a role—but with less work needed to access and play the content you want.

Tell us about your mission at Spotify and, specifically, your focus on ubiquity. How will listeners benefit?

As the delivery of audio content becomes all the more intuitive and seamless, our ubiquity strategy involves creating a truly frictionless experience for consumers. In other words, it’s to take whatever moment you’re in—if you’re driving, in your home, if you’re on your headphones, if you’re exercising—and make sure that you can get to your Spotify experience as easily and as quickly as possible.

The end state here is to ensure that Spotify aligns more deeply with the multiple devices in your life so that you won’t need to find the songs or podcasts to suit the moment—they will find you.

How do we deliver on the promise of ubiquity at Spotify? And what’s the entry point?

Our ubiquity strategy is very much mobile first, since most of our users today are coming in on their phones. If that’s their first touchpoint, then it’s about expanding that to more situations. We think that’s going to continue for quite some time.

From there, we need to be technically integrated with all the devices around you to enable a great Spotify experience that, to you as a consumer, intuitively works. That requires making sure that the integration for our partners is simple, such as with a voice-activated speaker.

At the end of the day, we need to deliver a simple solution for all: our users, partners, and creators.

Describe the opportunity for audio ahead. How do you ensure that listeners are aligned with that vision?

As mentioned, the strategy is to make everything less complicated. It’s reducing work that you have to do—making sure that you don’t have to be that technically advanced to be able to get to Spotify wherever you are. If there are, say, currently five steps to navigate something, we at Spotify ask, why should our users have to navigate at all? Can we remove steps?

We believe that we can take users on a journey to reevaluate audio and get more out of their lives with content from creators—in the right place at the right time. We think it’s less about listeners aligning with our vision than it is about us aligning with their behavior.

Some say that there can be too much screen time. Is there such a thing as too much audio as well?

It isn’t really a comparable analogy. For example, music speaks more to moods. It’s complementary: it’s not taking you away from your family, it’s not taking you away from your social interactions. It enhances those moments of your life. And with podcasts, we see that many people want to engage with longer-form content that goes deeper into a variety of topics, giving them a richer understanding of the world around them. We hope that that can be a really powerful force in society.
