7 Great Audiobooks That Inspired 2024’s Most Nominated Films

Sometimes a story is too good to only exist as a book, which has inspired countless directors to turn must-read novels into feature-length films. And quite often, those movies end up nominated for awards.

To celebrate this year’s award-nominated (and award-winning) movies, Spotify’s audiobooks team has highlighted their favorite picks that inspired a number of 2024’s nominees. From gritty true crime accounts to uplifting memoirs to biting satires or fantastical literature, the entire range of literary genres is represented on this list.

So take a deeper dive into seven of this year’s top films by listening to the audiobooks that inspired them.

Killers of the Flower Moon

Written by David Grann

Narrated by Will Patton, Ann Marie Lee, and Danny Campbell

(Inspired Best Picture nominee Killers of the Flower Moon)

From New Yorker staff writer and New York Times bestselling author David Grann, Killers of the Flower Moon revisits a shocking series of crimes in which dozens of people were murdered in cold blood. Based on years of research and startling new evidence, the book is a masterpiece of narrative nonfiction, as each step in the investigation reveals a series of sinister secrets and reversals. But more than that, it is a searing indictment of the callousness and prejudice toward indigenous Americans that allowed the murderers to operate with impunity for so long.

American Prometheus

Written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin

Narrated by Jeff Cummings

(Inspired Best Picture nominee Oppenheimer)

Robert Oppenheimer is one of the iconic figures of the twentieth century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb for his country in a time of war and who later found himself confronting the moral consequences of scientific progress.

In American Prometheus, a Pulitzer Prize–winning biography 25 years in the making, authors Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin capture Oppenheimer’s life and times, from his early career to his central role in the Cold War.

Society of the Snow

Written by by Pablo Vierci

Narrated by Elliot Fitzpatrick

(Inspired Best Foreign Language Film nominee Society of the Snow)

In this alarmingly gritty, moving, and powerfully told story, journalist Pablo Vierci recounts the unsettling tales of the 16 who survived the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crash in 1972. Drawing on exclusive interviews, Society of the Snow delves into the tragedy of the crash and how it radically redefined the rest of the survivors’ lives. Ultimately, however, the book is a touching testament to the strength of faith and friendship and the resilience of the human spirit.

Poor Things

Written by by Alasdair Gray

Narrated by Russ Bain and Kathryn Drysdale

(Inspired Best Picture nominee Poor Things)

In Alasdair Gray’s Poor Things, one scientist’s ambition to create the perfect companion is realized when he finds the drowned body of the beautiful Bella, whom he brings back to life in a Frankenstein-esque feat. His dream is then disrupted when his protégé develops a jealous love for Bella—but Bella has her own thoughts on the matter.

This story of true love and scientific daring whirls the reader from the private operating theaters of late-Victorian Glasgow through to aristocratic casinos, the dark corners of Alexandria, and a Parisian bordello before reaching an interrupted climax in a Scottish church.

The Zone of Interest

Written by Martin Amis

Narrated by Sean Barrett

(Inspired Best Picture nominee The Zone of Interest)

In this love story that transpires in a violently unromantic setting, The Zone of Interest provides a searing portrait of life—and, shockingly, love—in a concentration camp. Powered by both wit and pathos, Martin Amis’ novel excavates the depths and contradictions of the human soul. Can love survive after we’ve seen who we really are?

Find a Way

Written and narrated by Diana Nyad

(Inspired Best Lead Actress nominee Nyad)

In Find a Way, author Diana Nyad engages us with her unique, passionate, personal story of heroic adventure and extraordinary life experiences as she swam 111 miles from Cuba to Florida. Previously failing to accomplish the feat in her twenties and giving up on swimming altogether, Diana’s accomplishment 30 years later provides the backdrop for a galvanizing meditation on facing fears and living our lives with no regrets.

Erasure

Written by Percival Everett

Narrated by Sean Crisden

(Inspired Best Picture nominee American Fiction)

A blistering satire about race and publishing, Percival Wright’s Erasure looks into the life of a writer whose career has bottomed out and left him seething on the sidelines of the literary establishment.

In a fit of rage and despair, Thelonious “Monk” Ellison writes a novel under a pseudonym that he never intended to be published, but soon it becomes the next big thing. How Monk deals with the personal and professional fallout galvanizes this audacious, hysterical, and quietly devastating work.

Nominees for ‘Music Moves Europe Awards’ Showcase a Diverse, Talented Mix of Artists

an image of yune pinki with graphic treatment over it noting the MME Awards 2024

Each year, the Music Moves Europe (MME) Awards celebrate the best and the brightest of emerging European talent. Organized by the Netherlands’ Eurosonic Noorderslag (ESNS) in partnership with Germany’s Reeperbahn Festival and co-funded by the EU, the MME Awards represents the full support of a unique alliance among European music industry partners.

To launch the awards process, a jury of five music professionals convenes to review the latest nominated talent coming out of Europe. Fifteen EU artists are nominated across five MME Awards and the Grand Jury MME Award using, according to MME, “a complex selection process based on the amount of airplay, music streams, and live performances in Europe, as well as via music industry recommendations to reflect the vibrant diversity of the European music scene.” Additionally, music lovers around the globe are invited to vote for their favorite artists, who will win the popular MME Public Choice Award.

Music fans may be familiar with past nominees including Lous and the Yakuza and Schmyt —both Spotify RADAR artists—The Haunted Youth, Sans Soucis, and ROSALÍA.

“We’re thrilled to continue our support to the Music Moves Europe Awards,” said Bryan Johnson, Head of Artist & Industry Partnerships, International, at Spotify. “The EU-funded prize provides an all-important platform for emerging artists across Europe to showcase their music, reach new fans, and take the vital next steps in their musical journeys.”

This year’s nominees have just been determined, and the 15 artists can be found on the official Spotify MME Awards 2024: The Nominees playlist on Spotify.

Winners will be announced in January at the ESNS festival and conference in Groningen, Netherlands. While at the event, Spotify will also be hosting in-person masterclass sessions with the nominees.

Check out these talented nominees below.

Bulgarian Cartrader (Bulgaria)

In December 2021, Bulgarian Cartrader, a singer, producer, salsa dancer, and fishing enthusiast, released his first single, “No Other Drug.” Now, three singles later, he has gained attention in indie bubbles across the globe. Playing one show a month in and around Berlin since the beginning of 2022, he’s been rapidly growing his fan base. After an iconic show at the School Night showcase in Los Angeles, his momentum is also continuing overseas.

ClockClock (Germany)

Behind the ClockClock name, fans know singer-songwriter Boki and producer collective Vonsini and Feezy. The group’s first EP, When The Sun Don’t Shine, was released at the end of March 2023 and contains “Sorry” and “Someone Else,” both of which reached number one on the official German Airplay Charts in 2022. After completing a sold-out tour in early 2023, the band went on to support P!NK and Simply Red

Giift (Denmark)

One of the most promising new artists on the international scene today, the Copenhagen R&B singer Giift began her rise with two self-made EPs, Archives and Conditions. Giift couples deeply personal lyrics with a unique singing style. She has a self-taught, boundless way of producing harmonies and musical layers, making for a minimalistic yet complex sound. Since her 2022 debut, the young artist has already played several sold-out shows and critically acclaimed sets at both Roskilde Festival and VEGA.

Ralphie Choo (Spain)

Madrid-based artist-producer Ralphie Choo’s fusion of unpredictable pop and traditional Spanish flamenco has found new audiences since his debut album, SUPERNOVA, dropped last month. This mix of modernity and tradition surprises and challenges conventions of standard genres, as evidenced on his reinterpretation of flamenco on “BULERÍAS DE UN CABALLO MALO.”

Pearly Drops (Finland)

Hailing from Helsinki, the duo behind Pearly Drops, Sandra Tervonen and Juuso Malin, are known for their eerily haunting pop dirges. Their strange, softly smudged soundscapes feature spare compositionals and ethereal vocals underlined by dreamy synth and percussion.

Zaho de Sagazan (France)

Française Zaho de Sagazan comes from a family of artists and was introduced to music, graphics, and dance at an early age. She forged her own path with her debut album, La symphonie des éclairs. Zaho de Sagazan’s music is an infectious mix of disco and ’80s-era synth-pop, aspects of Krautrock and French chansons, a bit of electro, and indie pop.

Fran Vasilić (Croatia)

Fran Vasilić spent the first 19 years of his life on the island of Krk in Croatia and emerged in the midst of quarantine to battle self-grief as he shifted pain into purpose in his music. The bedroom indie pop artist has a unique ability to connect with listeners. He’s posted a series of viral TikTok posts, and his debut album, Retrovizor, surpassed 7.5 million streams on Spotify.

yunè pinku (Ireland)

Malaysian Irish artist yunè pinku creates music that taps into the experience of being a young person in the early 2020s. Layers of wistful, syrupy vocals and sound draw from the UK rave canon but include a restless, textural slant. In the shuffle-y garage rhythms of her production, one can hear traces of her childhood in London.

Arny Margret (Iceland)

Icelandic indie-folk singer Arny Margret’s debut album, they only talk about the weather, is a  coming-of-age journey that revisits her time writing in school and being on the road, and her most recent experiences of today. With poetic proficiency and a knack for composing melodies that bury themselves deep into the subconscious, Arny writes of loneliness and existentialism. Her most recently released EP is dinner alone.

Tramhaus (Netherlands)

In just over a year, Rotterdam’s post-punkers Tramhaus have earned a space on European stages, helped by memorable live shows. The Dutch five-piece takes a stand against the bleak realities of society, as evidenced on their singles and self-titled debut EP, and unleashes destruction and chaos onstage. Tramhaus thrives on knee-jerk energy and pure insanity to propel their songwriting, spitting the words of the oppressor back at their targets.

Ash Olsen (Norway)

Fredrikstad rapper Ash Olsen dropped her first song, “KITKAT,” in 2020. Since then, her debut EP, ASHY, has been warmly received by fans, press, and radio around the world. The Norwegian writes all her songs herself and coproduces with partner Malte Høglund. Her second album, Golden Child, was released in June 2023 and includes a collab with South London rapper Che Lingo.

Berry Galazka (Poland)

While Polish artist Berry Galazka grew up in a cultural melting pot in Florida, the colorful babushkas and delicious pierogi from her Polish grandmother were always present. She later moved to London to pursue a hard-edged alternative sound that merged her twin loves of distorted guitars and hard-hitting hip-hop drumming. Berry’s songwriting is inspired by art, fashion, psychology, and philosophy. Her second EP, Leash, was released in February 2023.

Ana Lua Caiano (Portugal)

Ana Lua Caiano fuses traditional Portuguese music with electronics, taking elements from the past and fusing it with synthesizers, beat machines, and field recordings. Tune into her 2023 debut EP, Se Dançar É Só Depois, to hear just how innovative her sound is.

waterbaby (Sweden)

waterbaby is the musical moniker of 24-year-old Stockholm-born Kendra Egerbladh. She quickly made her mark on the Nordic music scene after being featured on releases by Seinabo Sey and Hannes. After several singles, waterbaby released her debut EP, Foam, in June 2023. It’s the perfect introduction to her sound of enchanting bedroom pop and soft, dreamy vocals.

freekind. (Slovenia)

Be free. Be kind” is the philosophy of vocalist-pianist Sara Ester Gredelj and drummer Nina Korošak-Serčič, the artists behind freekind. The Slovenian duo irreverently refers to its approach to making music as “collective group therapy,” and one of its most popular singles,“Visualize,” is a seductive mix of R&B, jazz, pop, and soul.

Our Streaming Data Suggests Who Might Take Home a 2019 BRIT Award

The BRIT Awards 2019, the British Phonographic Industry’s annual celebration honoring the best in British and International music, takes place just a few days from now on February 20. Who will walk away as the big winners of the night? We’re taking this opportunity to speculate, based on Spotify streaming data.

Although the BRITs have three categories for international artists, most are dedicated to British singers and groups. Our guesses at the winners are based solely on which artists racked up the most streams from our UK listeners in 2018. So, without further ado, drumroll, please:

British Male Solo Artist:

George Ezra, 257 million streams in the UK in 2018

Fun fact: Both of George’s studio albums topped the charts in the UK, and also cracked the top ten in several other countries.

British Female Solo Artist:

Jess Glynne, 212 million streams in the UK in 2018

Fun fact: Jess is the first British female singer to have seven singles hit the number-one spot on the UK charts.

British Group:

Arctic Monkeys, (pictured above), 285 million streams in the UK in 2018

Fun fact: Arctic Monkeys’ 2006 album, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, was the fastest-selling album in British music history.

Mastercard British Album of the Year:

George EzraStaying at Tamara’s, 189 million streams in the UK in 2018

Fun fact: The second single from this album, “Shotgun,” topped the charts in the UK, Ireland, and Australia.

International Male Solo Artist:

Drake, 821 million streams in the UK in 2018

Fun fact: Nearly one million Londoners listen to Drake on Spotify each month, second only to Angelenos (just over one million).

International Solo Artist:

Ariana Grande, 356 million streams in the UK in 2018

Fun fact: Ariana’s single “thank u, next” clocked more than 376 million worldwide streams on Spotify in just the last eight weeks of 2018.

International Group:

Twenty One Pilots, 108 million streams in the UK in 2018

Fun fact: In 2016, Twenty One Pilots became only the third rock act to have two songs in Billboard’s top five at the same time. The previous two: The Beatles and Elvis Presley.

Don’t forget to tune in to see if our predictions—and UK streamers—were spot on.

Explore the Secrets of Video Game Music in New Podcast From Spotify and The Game Awards

What would Red Dead Redemption 2 be without its soulful outlaw rhythms and evocative original score? Or the NBA 2K, Madden, and FIFA franchises without the adrenaline-pumping hip-hop beats? Ask any avid gamer and they’ll tell you: Music sets the tone for gameplay. It has the power to hype you up for a battle, suck you into a plot, and drive you to victory. Matching music to a video game isn’t an afterthought; it’s a complex creative endeavor worthy of celebration. That’s why we are teaming up with The Game Awards to launch “Score Points,” a new podcast dedicated to the growing art.

Launching today—prior to The Game Awards, which will stream live at 8:30 p.m. ET—the six-episode podcast series reveals the untold musical stories behind the five nominees for Best Score/Music Award, presented by Spotify. The games nominated for the award are: Celeste, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, Octopath Traveler, and Red Dead Redemption 2.

The new podcast, hosted by veteran video games journalist and The Game Awards producer Geoff Keighley, will take gaming fans inside the creative process of writing an interactive musical score. He’ll also explore the ways game soundtracks cleverly mirror players’ choices—and keep the momentum going through every plot twist and level.

In creating the iconic Nordic soundscape of God of War, Emmy-winning composer-musician Bear McCreary enlisted the talents of Faroese singer-songwriter Eivør Pálsdóttir, a 50-string orchestra, and two large choirs.

“I had to find ways of giving the audience what they want emotionally,” McCreary shared during a “Score Points” podcast episode. “In many cases, that’s a climax or a closure or a resolution. In the epilogue of the game, it might have been my favorite key to write because I was like, ‘Wait, you cut to black!’ It’s the biggest smash-cut ever in the music. When it cuts to black, I found when I played the game, that moment is super satisfying.”

Grab your gaming headset, crank up the volume, and check out our new Score Points podcast. As they say in PUBG (PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS), “Winner, winner, chicken dinner!” It’s game on.
