It’s never been easier to hear the latest takes from the hottest influencers, celebrities, and creators—in real time—thanks to Spotify Live. Along with a rebrand of the app formerly known as Spotify Greenroom, live audio is now available directly on Spotify, right alongside your favorite music and podcasts. Now you can tune into your favorite live programming right on Spotify on a creator’s podcast or artist page.

Plus, there are always new conversations coming to Spotify Live. This May, eight shows join the ranks of fan favorites like Off the Record with DJ Akademiks, After Hours with Alex Cooper, Taylor Talk with Ellie Schnitt, and A Gay in the Life with Garrett Clayton and Blake Knight

One new show is coming from Ari Elkins, a creator who’s become known for his music taste and takes. We grabbed a few minutes with the recent University of Michigan grad ahead of the show’s premiere this evening.

Can you give us a preview of your new show?

The idea for Soundtrack Your Day came from President Obama’s annual playlists. In my mind, Obama isn’t generally associated with music or being an artist, but so many people were tuning into his playlists, including me. So I thought, everybody’s listening to music. What if we take people from different sectors, get them to share the music they love and are interested in, get them to create a playlist of it, and talk about music that they’re passionate about?

So Soundtrack Your Day is essentially looking at the intersectionality between pop culture and music by bringing on guests that don’t necessarily traditionally talk about music and pairing them with some of their favorite artists to create a playlist that we discuss in the live show. We’ll ask for songs for specific moments from each guest we invite on as well as the audience members.

You’re best known for using TikTok to showcase music trends and insights. Why do you think that’s resonating so highly with people who tune in?

I think that a big piece of it has to do with just how I’m presenting things on TikTok. When I think about music, I associate music with different moments in my own personal life. I remember the song I was playing when I was driving on the PCH, going to the beach with my friends. And so how I like to think about music is associating different songs with different moments. And I think that really resonates with people because everybody loves going to the beach with their friends. And if you can present people with a playlist for that exact moment, people love that.

I play a lot on nostalgia in my videos, so bringing back songs that your parents used to play. My dad, I grew up listening to my dad play jazz piano, so he was always just playing random oldies on the piano. Tons of Miles Davis songs. And so I kind of use the songs that my dad would always play and share that in some of my videos on TikTok.

What’s your prediction for what song will be the song of the summer?

A song that has been blowing up recently that I think will keep being big in summer is “Sun Roof” by Nicky York. It’s been blowing up on TikTok recently, and it’s just all about having your sunroof open and driving along. One cool thing is that the “song of summer” could be a song that we might not have even heard yet and that might not have even been created yet. So I’m hopeful that the Song of Summer might be by an artist that no one’s even heard of yet.

What elements does Live offer that are missing from other formats?

Greater audience participation. Like obviously you have your comments on TikTok, but to be able to bring someone up onstage and talk to them, human being to human being, and ask them directly, “What are the songs that resonate with you?” “Where are you from?” I think the cool thing about this is it’s bringing people together from all different places and backgrounds. To have these human connections with people beyond just a comment section. It’s pushing people to be more interactive. Spotify Live is all about bringing people together and having everybody be involved beyond just listening to something.

Why are you excited to work with Spotify on Soundtrack Your Day?

I’ve been an avid Spotify user my whole life. The first TikTok video I made that went viral was “songs that will take you back to your favorite college party.” And after that video went viral, everybody in my comment section was like “make a Spotify playlist, make a Spotify playlist.” And so I ended up making a Spotify playlist for that, gaining a bunch of different followers on Spotify and on my playlist. And then ideated off of that idea and created a video for “songs for when you’re feeling sad” and then created the Spotify playlist for that. So I’ve been making Spotify playlists for the past two or three years and getting a good amount of traction on these playlists. So to now be able to work in partnership with Spotify is just a dream come true.

Going forward, I’m trying to figure out more ways to use my platform as a vehicle to support smaller artists. And I think Soundtrack Your Day could be a way into that. I think it’s gonna be a really fun show, a really different show. It’s a show that celebrates both music and pop culture by presenting music in a new way. Whether you’re 14 or 40, everyone shares music in their daily lives and does so differently. I hope everyone streaming the show is ready to come to the table to tell stories about how music has impacted them and changed their lives.

Getting Ready for the Big Game? Tune In to These Sports Podcasts and Spotify Greenroom Live Rooms

It’s no secret that football fans have an insatiable appetite for the game and everything that surrounds it. And they’re often looking to go deeper—whether by digging into the stats of a player or team, entering a fantasy league, or connecting with other fans. The week leading up to the biggest game of the year (and the week coming out of it) is no exception.

Podcasts provide the perfect medium for rabid fans to get their football fill, hear from the experts, and reflect on the way sports influence society—and vice versa. Spotify has the home-field advantage on all sports and gaming talk with podcasts from The Ringer, live Spotify Greenroom discussions, and custom curations on our latest podcast editorial hub, The Roster.

Whether you’re creating or consuming content, Spotify has plenty for you to warm up with as you prepare for the Big Game.

Rounding out The Roster

The Roster is our new community for sports, betting, and gaming, and it has made its rookie debut on Spotify just in time for the Big Game. Like our other podcast editorial hubs, The Roster is a one-stop-shop destination for fans across many different communities, backgrounds, and sports to find the game-day discussions they’re looking for. Fans can find a five-episode weekly curation of the biggest sports conversations under Podcast Browse every Thursday. (This week, it includes Let’s Go! with Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray, “Tom Brady Speaks Post-Retirement for the First Time.”)

Plus, leading into the Big Game, The Roster’s four distinct shelves have been broken down into themes celebrating many different aspects of football:

Most Valuable Playlists: This shelf is dedicated to guest curations featuring talent from The Ringer, sports journalists, iconic athletes, and other voices within the sports and gaming communities. Make sure to check out The Ringer’s Bill Simmons’s ultimate guide to this weekend’s game

Sports on Demand: This space updates weekly to provide the best podcast episodes that recap, forecast, and bring awareness to the moments, events, and athletes of the month. Of course, this week it’s football themed with curated episodes recapping previous games, including selections like The Man to Man with DB & AB (that’s Antoine Bethea and Darius Butler for the uninitiated), who speak to Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs

Beyond the Game: Fans of experiences that speak to the human side of sports can come here for stories of injustices, scandals, inequalities, testimonies, triumphs, breakthrough moments, and beyond. For example, this week you’ll find the Black Girls Talk Sports podcast episode “Celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day.”

The Moneyline: There’s a world beyond the game, whether that’s fantasy or betting, and this shelf digs into that. So this week, check out The Ringer Gambling Show, “Initial Super Bowl Leans and Putting Together Prop Bet Narratives.”

Not a fan of football? No sweat. Tune back in ahead of upcoming basketball, baseball, and soccer championships and playoffs—as well as many more moments—for custom curations to help avid fans of all types wade through the stands to find sports and gaming content they’re craving.

Tune in for the Newest Pop Culture, Music, and Playlist-Inspired Shows on Spotify Greenroom

Spotify Greenroom is now available to listeners in over 135 markets around the world, and with it, the innovative new live shows listeners can’t get enough of. From conversations around sports from The Ringer to discussions around music from artists like Pop Smoke, Greenroom has a little bit of something for everyone—and that’s even more true starting this week.

Starting Monday, we’re unveiling five new shows on Spotify Greenroom. Each is unique, with an original set of hosts and featuring a variety of topics, but each is steeped in pop culture expertise, whether that’s movies, television, news, or music.

One of the shows in particular are inspired by one of Spotify’s most popular playlists, Lorem. Lorem comes to listeners as LOREM Life, a mix of culture and discussions on music, art, the environment, sustainability, fashion, and space. It’s hosted by beloved Gen Z influencers Dev Lemons and Max Motley, who will engage artists and influencers alike.

Read on for a little bit about each show from the hosts themselves, then check out what’s coming to Greenroom this week.

LOREM Life – Hosted by Max Motley and Dev Lemons

Wednesday, September 15, 9 PM ET

Greenroom offers a unique way to engage with music and playlists in particular. Why are you excited to use the platform in this way?

Max: I’m excited about the platform because I think it offers a cool opportunity to have a conversation. Usually when talking about music it’s very one directional and hard to actually host a discourse about it. I think Greenroom will provide a unique space for music fans to connect, converse, and celebrate music.

Dev: I’m super excited about this opportunity because I feel that Greenroom will be a fun, casual space for everyone to engage in conversation about music, fashion, and pop culture. I’m honored to represent the Lorem playlist, since it’s always full of fantastic artists. I’m especially excited to cohost a show with Max since we always have such great conversations offline as well! Having a show together on Greenroom will be a really candid, engaging experience for everyone.

What are the key differences you’ve noticed between Spotify Greenroom and Twitch or TikTok?

Max: I guess one of the obvious differences would be that TikTok and Twitch have video, but one feature of Greenroom that is really cool is the opportunity to talk directly with fans in the room. The opportunity for users to have their voices heard instead of being limited to comments I think provides a really cool space where conversation isn’t so one-sided.

Dev: Since you don’t have to show your face on Greenroom, the pressure of worrying about your appearance is taken off the table. Not only for the hosts, but for the viewers who will want to join in on the convo.

How has the transition been from being a social media personality to a live-audio host?

Max: I think the jump hasn’t been as drastic as one might think. Making video content for over a year, I’ve gotten really comfortable behind the camera and talking music. I also come from a background of college radio, which I’m sure will come in handy. In the end I’m really excited about the opportunity, especially to be doing it with my close friend Dev and about the Lorem community, which I am super passionate about.

Dev: I actually got my start in entertainment as an actress in my high school’s theater club, so I have strong roots in live entertainment. I love doing prerecorded stuff for social media since I have more control over what the end product is, but I’m really looking forward to the candidness of hosting a live show. It’ll allow room for fun, off-the-cuff moments that we may have never thought of if this show were scripted. I’m excited to feed off Max and the guests’ energies!

Gossip Girl’s Jordan Alexander, Joshua Safran, and Rob Lowry Dish on the Reboot’s Musicality, Explosive Episodes, and Gen Z Mentality

Though Gossip Girl may have secrets she’ll never tell, star Jordan Alexander—who plays Julien Calloway—plus showrunner Joshua Safran and music supervisor Rob Lowry were more than willing to dish on the show’s iconic soundtrack.

Ahead of the show’s mid-season finale, the Gossip Girl team also curated a Julien Calloway-themed playlist called Inside Julien’s Headphones to give viewers a deeper look into the leading character. But they’re not the only ones working on character playlists. Since the premiere of the show’s reboot in July on HBO, Spotify listeners have created more than 3,700 playlists, while searches of Gossip Girl-related music on Spotify increased by more than 80%. It’s clear the show’s distinct musical footprint is resonating with its audience.

To better understand Gossip Girl’s powerful sound, For the Record sat down with the three experts to discuss Julien Calloway, unpack the show’s musical stylings, and tease drama ahead. Read on for all the details, no narrator required.

First, the question on everyone’s mind: Jordan, what songs do you listen to when getting into character as Julien?

Jordan:successful” by Ariana Grande and “Traitor” by Olivia Rodrigo, depending on the scene.

And how do your and Julien’s musical tastes compare? Do you both listen to the same songs?

Jordan: I don’t think our tastes are crazy different. Julien probably likes pop, and I love pop. But I also imagine that Julien likes classical music, but for a different reason than I do. I feel like it makes her feel really powerful and a little psychotic, and she likes that when she’s in her big penthouse in these dramatic dresses. There’s nothing better than classical instrumentation, like Tchaikovsky or something similarly intense. I would say that classical would be the overlap.

Turning to the playlist, what song or genre do you think most captures Julien?

Jordan: There’s a song on there called “Flood” by Vagabon, and it encapsulates how I feel about Julien, both sonically as well as lyrically. It’s such a momentous rush of emotion, and the title of the song is “flood,” which is fitting. Julien as a human being is this rush, and there’s a lot going on always, no matter what. She’s completely swept off her feet in episode one, and it just doesn’t stop after that. She really is trying her best, and it’s so beautiful and overflowing. She has a powerful water essence to her, too. It could be tears, but it also could be a rushing river that destroys half of a mountain.

Joshua: Julien’s always searching, always a little lost, a little lonely, no matter how much she looks like she has it all together. There’s this melancholy and sadness in her. The Prince song that I put on there called “Pop Life” was important to me because it sounds poppy and happy, but when you listen to it, the lyrics are about deeply questioning where you are, what you think, and how you are moving through the world. It’s devastating, but you can’t tell from the sound. That’s Julien.

Joshua, Rob, what was your thought process while developing the playlist and the music for the show?

Joshua: I think the show does a good job of capturing how kids these days, because of Spotify, have a wider range of music. You go on TikTok and the current challenge might feature a song you’ve never heard of from the 1920s, one of the earliest recorded songs. Somebody has found that song because they can go through Spotify and dig deep in a way that old people like me and Rob couldn’t have. We would have had to go to a record store and be like, “Today, I’m looking at jazz.” Now you can find anything. And Julien’s playlist reflects that she can go on there and find this wide range.

Rob: Josh, you hit the nail on the head in terms of how Gen Z processes music, how they find it, and how genreless both their playlists and musical creations are, which I think is cool. Gen Z is constantly deconstructing aesthetics, whether that’s an Instagram aesthetic or a musical aesthetic like hyper pop, but they’re also seamlessly blending all of these different things. The real challenge for us was making sure it still felt cohesive. But what we’ve done is make the music hyper-specific in its relationship to the city and relationship to the characters. And that gives it its own arc and its own kind of character definition.

Musically, what’s next for Julien? How will her defining songs change?

Jordan: Julien’s next chapter of music is going to be more stripped down and raw, mimicking the progression of her as a person. She starts off with this polished veneer, and that might be like high pop and powerful. And then, I think we’ll see her finding the power in an indie acoustic, like a Phoebe Bridgers song. I feel like that would be the arc of her music.

Rob: And that’s a good representation of the music in the soundtrack of the show, too. The soundtrack has also evolved so much. By incorporating classical and opera, plus Josh’s wide range of tastes, we’re able to complement the more pop-leaning songs, hip-hop, and R&B. [Record producer and songwriter] Ariel Rechtshaid‘s score does a great job of walking that line. There are these beautiful, melodic, and timeless classical elements, and then there are layers of sophisticated, modern pop production and electronic.

Joshua: Yes, Julien gets more introspective as the season goes on, and so does her music. The sound dials down. But then maybe it explodes again…

Explodes?! Can you give us a hint of what’s to come?

Joshua: I don’t want to give it away, but the end of episode eight is incredibly dramatic. Probably one of the most dramatic endings of any episode of the season, if not both series. Jordan is in it and finding the right song was crucial. It had to be a song that, if you didn’t hear the scene, the song is the scene. But there’s something about the two coming together that’s beautiful. It’s pop, but it’s also melancholy and dark.

Exciting! And what’s the dynamic like on set? Is there music in the air?

Joshua: Jordan and most of our cast are incredibly musical. What I find so amazing is that their musicality is reflected in their performances, in the way they move their bodies, and in the way they find the emotion of the character. They have musical emotionality, these actors. Music is in every crevice of Gossip Girl in more ways than you realize.

Check Out Spotify’s Podcast Unpacking the Life and Death and Legacy of Pop Smoke—And Tune Into the Conversation on Greenroom

Rapper Pop Smoke was dubbed the new king of New York within just a year of his debut. By combining gravelly vocals with erratic production, he had a rapid rise in the mainstream and became the face and pioneer of Brooklyn’s rising drill scene. Sadly his life was cut short when he was shot in a tragic robbery on February 19, 2020. Now, a new Spotify original podcast in collaboration with Complex Networks, Complex Subject: Pop Smoke, will provide a posthumous, in-depth look at and tribute to the rapper.

The six-episode series unpacks the life and death of Pop Smoke, as told by the people closest to him. This podcast weaves a story of his whirlwind final months and serves as a review of the legacy he leaves behind. The series premieres with a full six-episode binge drop on July 20, which would have been the rapper’s 22nd birthday.

Plus, to amplify and provide insight and context into the premiere, Spotify’s Greenroom will be hosting a live conversation timed to the launch. DJ PVNCH, Black Girl Songbook host Danyel Smith, Complex editor Shawn Setaro, and television producer TT Torrez will come together to discuss the life and legacy of Pop Smoke and celebrate his birthday. Interested fans can download Greenroom and join the conversation on July 20 at 5:00 PM EST.

This podcast and simultaneous live experience mark the first time a Spotify Original podcast has been a part of a Greenroom live event in tandem with its launch. “It’s amazing to see this type of cooperation between our live and on-demand experiences,” says Michael Mignano, head of Spotify’s Creation Platform. “The Greenroom conversation will allow fans of the artist and the show to get live, thoughtful insights in real time to complement the podcast. This is going to open a lot of doors for fans to hear even more perspectives about the creators and work they love.”

Want even more Pop Smoke? On Friday, July 17, the artist’s second posthumous album, Faith, which follows 2020’s, Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon, debuted. Now, fans can stream the album alongside Complex Subject: Pop Smoke, only on Spotify.

On this week’s episode of our podcast Spotify: For the Record, we look at the live audio space to see where it’s headed and how Greenroom is part of the equation.

Next, mixed martial arts journalist and The Ringer’s Ariel Helwani shares how he’s using Greenroom as a way to provide live sporting event coverage and connect with an international audience.
